Chapter 3 - The Door Opens

Marcus took a step forward, his fists clenching. “You little bitch—”

The heavy oak front door didn't just open; it exploded inward, slamming against the doorstop with a sound like a gunshot.

The cold night air rushed into the warm hallway, bringing with it the smell of rain, damp earth, and an overwhelming aura of absolute authority.

Standing in the threshold was Daniel. He was in his full dress uniform, his posture rigid, his chest adorned with medals that caught the light of the trembling chandelier. His eyes, usually a warm, comforting hazel, were completely devoid of life. They were ice.

But he wasn't alone.

Step by step, three other men followed him into the foyer. Two of them were military police officers, their expressions grim and professional. The third man was a civilian wearing a sharp grey suit—Jonathan Vance, the senior district attorney for the financial crimes division, and an old colleague of mine.

The silence that fell over the room was absolute. The laughter died in Marcus’s throat. Tessa’s arms dropped to her sides, her face turning a sickly shade of ash gray. Gloria staggered backward, her hand flying to her pearl necklace as if it were choking her.

“Daniel!” Gloria gasped, her voice instantly shifting into a high-pitched, manic trill. “Oh, thank God you’re home! You... you wouldn’t believe what’s been happening. This... this girl you married, she’s been stealing from us! She’s been manipulating your accounts, and when we confronted her, she fell into the wall—”

Daniel didn't look at his mother. He didn't look at his brother.

He walked past them as if they were ghosts. He came straight to me.

His large, calloused hand gently touched my jaw, tilting my face toward the light. He saw the red, swelling imprint of Gloria’s hand on my cheek. He saw the smear of blood on my bottom lip. I felt his entire frame tremble, a deep, silent rage radiating from his body.

“Did they do this?” Daniel asked. His voice wasn’t loud. It was a low, guttural whisper that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

“Gloria hit me,” I said clearly, my voice echoing in the dead silence of the room. “Tessa spat on me. Marcus threatened to ruin us if I didn't sign over the house.”

Daniel closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, inhaling deeply. When he opened them, the man who loved his family was gone. Only the soldier remained.

He turned around slowly to face the three people who shared his blood.

“Daniel, son, listen to me,” Marcus stammered, taking a step back toward the sofa, his hands raised defensively. “She’s lying. She’s a professional liar, Daniel! Look at her job! She sets people up for a living. She’s trying to divide this family so she can take everything!”

Daniel took two steps forward. Marcus instantly froze.

“I have spent the last forty-eight hours on a flight from Germany,” Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Do you know what I did during those forty-eight hours, Marcus? I didn't sleep. I read. I read every single line item of the accounts you drained. I looked at the forged signatures. I looked at the authorization codes sent from Mom’s computer.”

Gloria gasped, her face pale. “Daniel, no, that’s—that’s a misunderstanding! We were just managing your assets because we thought your wife was incompetent!”

“Incompetent?” Daniel let out a short, bitter laugh that sent shivers down my spine. “Clara is the smartest person I have ever met. She didn’t just catch you. She built a case so airtight that even your high-priced corporate lawyers won’t find a single crack to slip through.”

He looked at the District Attorney. “Mr. Vance, please execute the warrants.”
