Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

Jonathan Vance stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out three distinct sets of documents.

“Gloria Vance, Marcus Vance, and Tessa Vance,” the District Attorney announced, his voice slicing through the room like a scalpel. “You are currently being charged with grand larceny, identity theft, wire fraud, and the embezzlement of federal military benefits. Additionally, due to the physical assault witnessed by the security array of this home, assault charges are being filed against Gloria Vance.”

“W-Witnessed?” Tessa stuttered, her eyes darting around the ceiling. “What security array? There are no cameras here!”

I reached into my pocket, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen. A small blue light blinked on the hidden lens embedded in the framework of the grandfather clock in the corner, and another one became visible near the molding of the ceiling.

“I am a forensic investigator, Tessa,” I said softly. “Did you really think I would host an intervention without recording the evidence? Every word you said, every threat you made, and the exact moment Gloria struck me has already been uploaded to a secure legal database. It was broadcast live to Mr. Vance’s office.”

Marcus collapsed onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands. “Daniel, please... we’re your family. You can’t do this to your own brother. It will ruin my life. My business will go under!”

“You ruined your own life the moment you stole from the men and women I command,” Daniel said, his eyes blazing with righteous fury. “You used my military ID to secure a fraudulent loan. You stole money meant for veterans’ families—men who have lost limbs, men who didn't come home. You used their sacrifice to fund your luxury lifestyle.”

Daniel walked over to the dining table and picked up the manila folder Tessa had brought. He looked at the transfer documents, a look of profound disgust crossing his features. He ripped them in half, then in quarters, and let the pieces fall to the floor like snow.

“You thought Clara was an office mouse,” Daniel said, looking at Tessa. “You thought she was weak because she was kind. But she is the protector of this house. While I was fighting overseas, she was fighting to protect our home from the real enemies. And the worst part is, the enemies were the people I grew up with.”

Gloria stepped forward, tears streaming down her face, ruining her expensive makeup. She tried to grab Daniel’s arm, but one of the military police officers stepped between them, his hand resting firmly on his holster.

“Daniel, please! I am your mother!” Gloria wailed. “I raised you!”

“And you robbed me,” Daniel replied, his voice dead and final. “You robbed my wife. You violated my home. From this moment on, you do not have a son. Marcus does not have a brother. You are nothing to me but a group of criminals who are about to face the full weight of the law.”

The two military police officers moved in, producing pairs of heavy steel handcuffs.
