Part 1: The Investigation Begins

The ballroom doors swung open before anyone could answer.
Three investigators entered behind Mr. Calloway.
Dark suits.
Official badges.
Folders thick with documents.
The laughter disappeared instantly.

Carter's confident smile vanished.
“What is this?” Vanessa demanded, rising from her chair.
Mr. Calloway didn't even look at her.
He walked directly to me.
“Mrs. Brooks, after reviewing the evidence you submitted, we obtained warrants to investigate attempted deed fraud, forged signatures, and unlawful property transfer activities involving Brooks Orchard Farm.”
The room exploded into whispers.
Carter's face turned ghost white.
“That's ridiculous,” he snapped.
“Is it?” Mr. Calloway asked calmly.
He opened the leather folder.
Inside were copies of legal documents.
Bank records.
Email chains.
Property transfer applications.
And there, highlighted in yellow, sat a forged version of my signature.
Several guests gasped.
Lily stared at the paperwork.
Her bouquet slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.
“No...” she whispered.
Mr. Calloway continued.
“Three months ago, someone submitted preliminary transfer documents attempting to move ownership of Brooks Orchard Farm into a newly formed holding company.”
He looked directly at Carter.
“The company was registered under your name.”
The silence became suffocating.
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“My son would never—”
“Mrs. Hayes,” another investigator interrupted, “your name appears on several supporting documents.”
Vanessa froze.
Across the ballroom, guests began quietly backing away from their table.
Nobody wanted to be associated with what was unfolding.
Carter's voice rose.
“This is a misunderstanding!”
But nobody sounded convinced anymore.
Because the evidence wasn't speculation.
It was sitting right there in black and white.
