Part 2: Lily Learns the Truth

The reception was effectively over.
Guests clustered into small groups, whispering behind raised hands.
Phones appeared everywhere.
People were recording.
Photographing.
Texting.
The social humiliation Carter feared most was happening in real time.
Meanwhile, Lily sat alone at a corner table.
Crying.
I walked toward her slowly.
For a moment she looked exactly like the little girl who used to follow me through the orchard carrying buckets too heavy for her small arms.
“Mom...” she whispered.
I sat beside her.
“Did you know?” I asked quietly.
She started shaking.
Then the truth came out.
Not all at once.
Piece by piece.
Like glass breaking.
“He told me it was legal.”
I closed my eyes.
“He said if the farm stayed with you, developers would eventually take it anyway.”
More tears.
“He said we could build luxury homes and retire early.”
“Did he tell you he forged my signature?”
Her face collapsed.
“No.”
“Did he tell you he tried to access my banking records?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you he hired investigators to estimate the value of every acre before you were even engaged?”
Lily stared at me.
Horrified.
Because she genuinely hadn't known.
Carter hadn't wanted a marriage.

He wanted an asset.
And my daughter had simply been the easiest path to obtain it.

For the first time all evening, Lily stopped defending him.
And started seeing him.
