PART 6 — THE WOMAN WHO CHANGED HER NAME

No one in the forensic lab moved.
Every monitor remained black.
The only sound was the low hum of the servers.
Detective Rachel Morgan was the first to react.
"Trace the signal."
Three technicians rushed to their keyboards.
Fingers flew across the keys.
One of them looked up less than a minute later.
"I've got a location."
"Where?"
He frowned.
"That's... impossible."
Morgan stepped beside him.
"What is it?"
"The transmission came from three different cities."
"Simultaneously."
I closed my eyes.
Another diversion.
Whoever was behind this had planned every step.
Every clue.
Every message.
They weren't just hiding.
They were directing the investigation.
Morgan looked at me.
"The woman wants to meet you."
"I know."
"It could be a trap."
"It probably is."
"So what do you want to do?"
I thought of David.
Of Lily.
Of the empty seats at their funeral.
Of Leo asking for fifty thousand dollars before my tears had even dried.
"I want answers."
Three hours later...
An encrypted email arrived on my phone.
No sender.
No subject.
Only an address.
Room 214
Lakeview Motel
10:00 p.m.
Come alone.
Morgan immediately objected.
"You're not going."
"I have to."
"We'll surround the motel."
"If she sees police..."
"...she'll disappear again."
Morgan knew I was right.
She hated it anyway.
At exactly 9:58 p.m.
I parked across from the aging motel.
Half the neon sign no longer worked.
Rainwater dripped from broken gutters.
The parking lot was almost empty.
Room 214 sat on the second floor.
One light glowed behind the curtains.
I climbed the stairs slowly.
Every instinct screamed at me to leave.
Instead...
I knocked.
Once.
Silence.
Then...
The door unlocked.
The woman stood inside.
Without the blonde wig.
Without sunglasses.
Without makeup.
She looked older than I expected.
Perhaps fifty.
Her eyes were tired.
Not frightened.
Not angry.
Just exhausted.
"You came."
"You asked me to."
She nodded toward the chair.
"Please."
"We don't have much time."
I remained standing.
"My husband knew you."
"Yes."
"My daughter knew you."
A flicker of pain crossed her face.
"I wish she hadn't."
"Who are you?"
She smiled sadly.
"I've had so many names..."
"Which one do you want?"
"The real one."
After a long silence...
She answered.
"My name is Victoria Bennett."
The room became completely still.
David had been right.
Victoria existed.
She wasn't dead.
She wasn't Emily Carter.
She had simply been hiding.
"Why?"
I asked.
"Because every person who ever learned the truth..."
"...ended up buried."
I sat down.
For the first time...
I believed her.
Victoria walked to the window.
She never looked outside.
She kept watching the reflection in the glass.
As if expecting someone behind us.
"I met your husband eight months ago."
"He found me."
"How?"
"He was looking into Leo's real estate company."
"He followed the money."
"And eventually..."
"...he found me."
"What did you tell him?"
"The same thing I'm about to tell you."
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Leo never worked for himself."
"I know."
"He answers to someone."
"I know."
She shook her head.
"No."
"You don't."
She reached into her handbag.
Removed a faded photograph.
Three young people smiled at the camera.
One was unmistakably my father.
Another was a younger Leo.
The third...
Was Victoria.
I stared at the picture.
"This doesn't make sense."
"My brother was a child."
"Exactly."
Victoria pointed at Leo.
"He wasn't supposed to survive."
I looked up sharply.
"What?"
"He disappeared when he was four."
"No."
"He's lived with us his whole life."
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
"That's what your parents wanted you to believe."
The room spun around me.
"What are you talking about?"
She took a deep breath.
"Your parents adopted him."
I laughed.
"No."
"They would have told me."
"They couldn't."
"Why not?"
"Because they didn't adopt him legally."
Before I could ask another question...
Someone knocked on the motel door.
Three slow knocks.
Victoria's face lost all color.
"They found us."
The knocking came again.
This time louder.
A man's voice.
"Housekeeping."
Neither of us moved.
Victoria whispered,
"They always say housekeeping."
She rushed toward the bathroom.
Pulled open a loose tile behind the sink.
Inside was a thin manila envelope.
She shoved it into my hands.
"If I don't make it..."
"No."
"Listen to me."
Her voice became firm.
"Don't open it until you're safe."
The knocking stopped.
For one terrifying second...
Everything was silent.
Then the motel room window exploded inward.
Glass flew across the room.
I hit the floor instinctively.
Victoria grabbed my arm.
"Run!"
We sprinted through the bathroom.
She kicked open a rear maintenance door I hadn't even noticed.
A narrow metal staircase led into the alley.
Behind us...
Heavy footsteps entered Room 214.
Men shouted.
Furniture crashed.
Someone fired a suppressed handgun.
The sound was little more than a dull pop.
Victoria pushed me toward the parking lot.
"Go!"
"What about you?"
"I'll slow them down."
"I'm not leaving you."
"You don't have a choice."
Headlights suddenly flooded the alley.
A black SUV blocked the exit.
Two masked men jumped out.
Weapons raised.
Victoria froze.
"So..."
she whispered.
"They're here already."
Before the men could move...
Another vehicle slammed into the SUV from the side.
Metal screamed.
Airbags exploded.
A dark blue pickup spun across the alley.
The driver's door flew open.
Detective Rachel Morgan stepped out with her service weapon drawn.
"Federal agents!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Gunfire erupted.
Chaos consumed the alley.
Victoria shoved the envelope against my chest.
"Don't let them have this."
Then she ran in the opposite direction.
One of the masked men ignored Morgan completely.
He chased Victoria.
She disappeared around the corner.
A single gunshot echoed through the night.
Then...
Silence.
Morgan grabbed my shoulders.
"Olivia!"
"Are you hurt?"
I couldn't answer.
I was staring at the envelope still clutched in my hands.
Fresh blood stained one corner.
Not mine.
Victoria's.
Morgan looked down at it.
"What's inside?"
My trembling fingers opened the flap.
There was only one document.
An original birth certificate.
Mother's Name:
Victoria Bennett
Child's Name:
Lucas Bennett
Date of Birth:
Twenty-eight years ago.
I looked at Morgan.
"Who's Lucas?"
She didn't answer.
Her eyes had stopped on the father's name.
Slowly...
She looked back at me.
"Oh my God..."
"What?"
She turned the certificate around.
Under Father was a name I knew better than my own.
May you like
Arthur Collins.
My father.
