PART 7 — MY FATHER'S SECOND LIFE

For a moment...

I forgot how to breathe.

The birth certificate slipped from my fingers and landed in a shallow puddle.

My father's name.

Arthur Collins.

Not as a witness.

Not as a guardian.

As the father.

Detective Rachel Morgan carefully picked up the document before the water could soak through the ink.

She stared at it for several seconds.

"This changes everything."

I whispered,

"No..."

"It destroys everything."

The alley behind the motel was suddenly alive with flashing lights.

Police cruisers.

Ambulances.

Federal agents.

The masked gunmen had vanished.

So had Victoria.

Only a trail of blood disappeared into the darkness beyond the motel.

No body.

No witnesses.

No answers.

Morgan ordered officers to search every block.

Dogs.

Drones.

Helicopters.

Nothing.

Victoria had disappeared.

Again.

Back at police headquarters...

The birth certificate was rushed to the forensic laboratory.

I sat alone in an interview room, unable to stop staring at my father's name.

Arthur Collins.

My father.

The man who had ignored Lily's funeral.

The man who had asked for fifty thousand dollars before I had finished grieving.

The man who now appeared to have lived an entirely different life before I was born.

Morgan entered carrying two coffees.

She placed one in front of me.

"You should drink something."

"I'm not thirsty."

"You haven't eaten today."

"I don't remember the last time I ate."

She nodded.

"I know."

A knock interrupted us.

A forensic examiner entered with a sealed evidence folder.

"We've completed the preliminary analysis."

Morgan stood immediately.

"And?"

"The document is authentic."

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

"The paper is twenty-eight years old."

"The ink matches the period."

"The hospital seal is genuine."

I felt sick.

"So my father..."

"...really is Lucas Bennett's biological father."

Morgan frowned.

"But there's something else."

She opened another page.

"The birth was never registered with the state."

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone removed the original record."

"Officially..."

"...Lucas Bennett was never born."

I closed my eyes.

A child erased from history.

Just like Victoria.

Another officer entered.

"Detective."

"What now?"

"We found surveillance footage from the motel."

Morgan looked hopeful.

"Show me."

The footage came from a convenience store across the street.

The quality wasn't perfect.

But it showed enough.

Victoria running into the alley.

One masked man chasing her.

Then...

A third person appeared.

Someone wearing a gray hoodie.

The stranger tackled the gunman from behind.

Both disappeared behind a dumpster.

Seconds later...

The stranger emerged alone.

Helped Victoria into a waiting sedan.

They drove away.

Morgan paused the video.

"Can we enhance the driver's face?"

The technician zoomed in.

The image sharpened.

Just enough.

My heart stopped.

"I know him."

Morgan looked at me.

"Who is he?"

"He worked with David."

His name came back instantly.

Michael Torres.

David's closest friend.

Best man at our wedding.

The man who had cried at David's funeral.

The man who told me he was leaving the country for work.

He hadn't left.

He had been protecting Victoria.

Morgan immediately ordered a search.

Within twenty minutes...

An officer returned.

"Michael Torres is gone."

"Gone?"

"His apartment is empty."

"When?"

"The landlord says he moved out the day after David's funeral."

Of course he had.

He'd been preparing.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Another message.

Michael kept his promise.

Then another.

Can your father say the same?

I looked up.

"I want to see my parents."

Morgan hesitated.

"Now."

Less than an hour later...

My parents arrived at headquarters.

Neither had been arrested.

Not yet.

My mother looked exhausted.

My father looked angry.

"What is this about?"

I placed the birth certificate on the table.

Neither of them touched it.

My father read the first line.

His face emptied of all emotion.

He didn't deny it.

He simply leaned back in his chair.

"So..."

he whispered.

"She finally told you."

I stared at him.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"You let me believe Leo was your only secret."

"I never wanted this."

I slammed my hand onto the table.

"Lucas is your son."

Another long silence.

Then...

He nodded.

"Yes."

My mother closed her eyes.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

She wasn't surprised.

She had always known.

I looked between them.

"So who is Lucas?"

My father's voice cracked.

"He was your brother."

Was.

Not is.

My pulse quickened.

"What happened to him?"

He covered his face with both hands.

"I lost him."

"How?"

"I don't know."

The answer exploded from him.

"I've spent twenty-eight years asking myself the same question."

He slowly lowered his hands.

"The day after he was born..."

"...Victoria disappeared."

"The hospital told me she had taken the baby."

"I searched everywhere."

"I hired private investigators."

"I spent years looking."

"I never found either of them."

Morgan leaned forward.

"But Victoria is alive."

"Yes."

"So she didn't disappear."

"No."

My father swallowed hard.

"She was taken."

The room became silent.

Morgan narrowed her eyes.

"Taken by whom?"

My father didn't answer.

Instead...

He looked directly at my mother.

She slowly nodded.

As if giving him permission.

Finally...

He whispered one name.

"Harold Whitmore."

Neither Morgan nor I recognized it.

But another detective standing near the door suddenly froze.

"You can't be serious."

Morgan turned.

"You know him?"

The detective nodded slowly.

"Harold Whitmore died fifteen years ago."

"So?"

"He wasn't just anyone."

"He founded the Whitmore Children's Foundation."

Morgan's expression changed.

"The orphan charity?"

"Yes."

The detective swallowed.

"It closed after dozens of financial investigations."

"No criminal charges were ever filed."

My father laughed bitterly.

"Because nobody investigated the children."

Every person in the room fell silent.

He looked at me.

"Lucas wasn't stolen for money."

"He was stolen because someone wanted children who officially didn't exist."

Before anyone could ask another question...

The interrogation room lights suddenly went out.

Emergency power activated.

Red lights filled the hallway.

Officers shouted outside.

Someone yelled,

"We've lost the entire network!"

Every computer screen in headquarters went black.

Then...

One image appeared simultaneously across the building.

A live video.

Victoria.

She was pale.

Covered in blood.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...they've already found me."

She coughed violently.

Then held up a photograph.

It showed three children.

One was me at about five years old.

One was Leo.

The third little boy had the same eyes as my father.

On the back of the photograph, written in faded blue ink, were seven words:

Only one of these children is Arthur's.

The screen went black.

The room fell into complete silence.

Because if the message was true...

Then either Leo...

May you like

Or I...

Had been living someone else's life all along.
