Part 4: The Secret Michael Kept From Me

Part 4: The Secret Michael Kept From Me
For three seconds, nobody spoke.
Not my father.
Not my mother.
Not Erica.
Not even Michael.
And somehow, that silence hurt more than anything anyone could have said.
Because I knew Michael.
I knew every small expression.
Every hesitation.
Every change in his voice.
And right now...
He was hiding something.
I looked at him.
“Michael.”
He didn’t answer immediately.
That was all I needed.
My heart sank.
“Tell me.”
His eyes softened.
“Sarah…”
“No.”
My voice shook.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was afraid.
“Not another person deciding what I can handle.”
A pause.
“Not another person protecting me by lying to me.”
His face fell.
Because he knew.
That was exactly what my parents had done my entire life.
And he had just stepped into the same pattern.
Erica smiled.
A small victory.
She loved this.
She loved seeing me uncertain.
Because uncertainty was where she always felt powerful.
“I told you,” she said.
Everyone turned toward her.
“You don’t really know him.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“Erica, stop.”
She laughed.
“Oh, now you want me to stop?”
My stomach twisted.
“What is she talking about?”
Michael looked at me.
Then at Erica.
Then back at me.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
He had no answer.
That hurt more than the secret itself.
“When, Michael?”
My father suddenly interrupted.
“This is exactly why we didn’t want you marrying him.”
I looked at him.
“Don’t.”
He frowned.
“I’m serious.”
For once, I believed him.
But not in the way he thought.
He wasn’t worried about me.
He was trying to use this moment to regain control.
“You always choose people who create drama.”
I stared.
After everything.
He still blamed me.
Michael stepped forward.
“Enough.”
My father looked at him.
“You don’t get to speak in this house.”
Michael’s expression turned cold.
“You lost that right when you stood over my pregnant wife and told her to get up.”
Silence.
My father looked away.
I looked back at Michael.
“Start talking.”
He nodded.
Slowly.
“When I first met you…”
A pause.
“I knew who you were.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
He swallowed.
“I knew about your family.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Before we dated?”
“Yes.”
The room felt smaller.
“Why?”
His eyes filled.
“Because I was investigating them.”
Everyone went still.
“Investigating?”
I repeated.
Michael nodded.
“Years ago, I worked on a case involving your father’s company.”
My father’s expression changed.
A warning.
“Michael.”
But Michael continued.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Sarah deserves the truth.”
My father said nothing.
Because he knew.
“Your father’s company had financial irregularities,” Michael explained.
“There were missing funds.”
I looked at my father.
He immediately looked angry.
“Careful.”
Michael ignored him.
“There were also reports from employees about unfair treatment.”
My mother whispered:
“That was years ago.”
I looked at her.
“You knew?”
She looked down.
And that answer was enough.
My entire body felt cold.
Another secret.
Another thing everyone knew except me.
Michael continued.
“I wasn’t investigating you.”
He stepped closer.
“I was investigating your family.”
I stared at him.
“And you never told me.”
“I wanted to.”
“When?”
His voice broke.
“Before we got married.”
I laughed softly.
Painfully.
“And?”
“I was afraid.”
I looked at him.
“Afraid of what?”
He looked at me.
“Of losing you.”
The answer should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
Because fear had already taken too much from my life.
Everyone used fear as an excuse.
My parents.
My sister.
Now him.
Erica suddenly laughed.
“You see?”
She pointed at Michael.
“He’s just like the rest of them.”
My eyes moved to her.
“What?”
She smiled.
“He thinks he can make decisions for you because he loves you.”
Michael looked at her.
“Don’t compare me to you.”
“Oh?”
Her smile widened.
“Then tell her the rest.”
My heart stopped.
“The rest?”
Michael looked away.
And I knew.
There was more.
I stepped back.
“What else?”
He was silent.
“Michael.”
Finally, he said:
“After I discovered what happened in your family…”
A pause.
“I kept investigating.”
I stared.
“Why?”
His eyes filled.
“Because I was worried about you.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
A tear fell.
“That’s not an answer.”
He closed his eyes.
“I found evidence that Erica had been manipulating situations for years.”
I froze.
“What?”
“She wasn’t just favored.”
Michael’s voice lowered.
“She was creating problems.”
Everyone went silent.
Even Erica.
Michael continued.
“She would break things and blame Sarah.”
“She would start arguments and tell your parents Sarah attacked her.”
“She would create situations where she became the victim.”
My hands shook.
Because suddenly my entire childhood rearranged itself.
The memories.
The punishments.
The accusations.
The moments I questioned myself.
All of them.
I looked at Erica.
“No.”
She stared back.
Then laughed.
“You’re lying.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
He pulled out his phone.
“I have recordings.”
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“What?”
“Your parents’ old security system saved audio.”
My mother stood.
“You had access?”
Michael looked at her.
“No.”
A pause.
“I had permission from the investigator who owned the property records.”
My father’s face darkened.
“This is illegal.”
Michael looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“Protecting evidence isn’t illegal.”
Michael opened a file.
The first recording played.
A younger Erica’s voice.
Maybe fifteen.
“I hate her.”
My blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
“She always gets attention.”
Another voice.
My mother.
“Erica, don’t say that.”
“I want them to stop caring about her.”
A pause.
Then Erica:
“Then I’ll make them.”
I couldn’t breathe.
Because hearing it was different.
Memories could be questioned.
But a voice?
A voice couldn’t be denied.
The second recording.
Years later.
A fight.
My voice.
Crying.
“I didn’t do it.”
My father.
“Stop lying.”
Then Erica.
Quiet.
Almost satisfied.
“See? Nobody believes you.”
I closed my eyes.
Because I remembered that day.
I remembered thinking I was crazy.
I remembered apologizing.
Michael turned the phone off.
The room was silent.
Erica’s face had lost all confidence.
“You recorded me?”
She looked at him.
“You were watching me?”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“I was protecting Sarah.”
“No!”
Her voice cracked.
Finally.
Emotion.
Real emotion.
“I was protecting this family!”
I stared at her.
“This family?”
She looked at me.
“Yes!”
A tear rolled down her face.
“You don’t understand!”
Her voice broke.
“Everyone loved you!”
I froze.
“What?”
She laughed through tears.
“You think I was the favorite?”
The room went still.
“I was the one they had to keep perfect because nobody would love me if I wasn’t.”
I stared at her.
For the first time...
I saw something other than cruelty.
I saw a damaged person.
But damaged people can still cause damage.
Erica stepped closer.
“You had freedom.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“You could fail.”
A pause.
“You could be imperfect.”
Her voice shook.
“I couldn’t.”
The words hung there.
And suddenly, I understood.
Not enough to forgive.
But enough to see.
She wasn’t born a monster.
She became one.
Then my father said something that changed everything.
“Erica.”
Everyone looked at him.
He walked toward her.
Not me.
Her.
For the first time in my life...
I saw him question her.
“Is this true?”
Erica looked at him.
And her face broke.
Because she realized.
The one thing she always feared...
Was happening.
He was finally seeing her.
Not the perfect daughter.
The real one.
She screamed.
“Now you care?”
The room shook.
“Now?”
She pointed at me.
“After you spent my whole life making me this way?”
My mother started crying.
My father stood frozen.
And I realized something.
The truth had finally entered the house.
Not the version everyone wanted.
The real one.
Then Michael received another message.
He looked at it.
And his face changed.
“What?”
I asked.
He handed me the phone.
One sentence.
From the investigator.
Sarah, we found the person who encouraged Erica all these years. It wasn’t just your parents. Someone else was involved.
My hands went cold.
I looked up.
“Who?”
Michael stared at the screen.
Then said:
“The person who knew everything.”
May you like
A pause.
“Your grandmother.”
