Part 8: The Woman Behind the Perfect Family

Part 8: The Woman Behind the Perfect Family

The phone went silent.

But Linda’s final word remained.

Eleanor.

I stood frozen in the middle of my bedroom.

The box from my grandmother was open.

The files were scattered.

The one piece of evidence that could finally expose everything was gone.

And the person who had taken it…

Was the same woman who had been smiling at family dinners for years.

“Sarah.”

Michael’s voice pulled me back.

“We need to go.”

I grabbed my coat.

My hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From the realization that the person I thought was simply part of the family…

Had been watching me.

Studying me.

Waiting.

The drive to Linda’s location felt endless.

Neither of us spoke.

The city lights passed outside the window, but I barely saw them.

My mind kept returning to memories.

Eleanor bringing gifts on holidays.

Eleanor complimenting my grandmother.

Eleanor telling me:

“You’re such a quiet child.”

Back then, I thought it was kindness.

Now I wondered if she was measuring me.

Learning how much I would tolerate.

When we arrived, the café was surrounded by police cars.

My heart dropped.

Michael immediately pulled over.

“Stay behind me.”

I almost argued.

Then I stopped.

Because this time, I understood.

Being protected did not mean being powerless.

We rushed inside.

Linda was sitting at a table.

Alive.

But terrified.

A police officer was taking her statement.

When she saw me, tears filled her eyes.

“She came here.”

I knelt beside her.

“Who?”

Linda looked at me.

“Eleanor.”

“What happened?”

Linda held her hands tightly.

“She knew I had spoken to you.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

She looked away.

“She followed me.”

Michael exchanged a look with the officer.

“Did she threaten you?”

Linda hesitated.

Then nodded.

“She didn’t need to.”

A pause.

“She just smiled.”

That was somehow worse.

I remembered Eleanor’s smile.

Perfect.

Controlled.

Never angry.

Never emotional.

The kind of smile that made everyone else look unreasonable.

A smile that said:

I already won.

The officer handed Michael a small bag.

Inside was a flash drive.

My breath caught.

“The missing one?”

The officer nodded.

“It was found outside the café.”

Michael looked confused.

“Why would she leave it?”

Linda whispered:

“She didn’t.”

We looked at her.

“She wanted us to find it.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?”

Linda looked at the drive.

“It means she wants you to see what’s on it.”

Michael frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

But I understood something.

People like Eleanor did not make mistakes.

They created moments.

Back at home, we connected the drive.

The first files were financial records.

Transfers.

Accounts.

Companies.

Nothing surprising.

Then we found a folder.

The name:

SARA.

My entire body went cold.

Not Sarah.

Sara.

My childhood nickname.

The one only family used.

Michael looked at me.

“Do you want to open it?”

I stared at the screen.

For years, I wanted answers.

Now they were right in front of me.

And suddenly I was afraid.

Because answers changed things.

Once you knew the truth…

You couldn’t go back.

I clicked.

The first file was a video.

Old.

Grainy.

A room I recognized.

My grandmother’s house.

The camera angle was from the corner.

A hidden camera.

The date:

Fifteen years ago.

I was twelve.

The video started.

Eleanor was sitting with my father.

They were talking.

My father looked younger.

Less confident.

More desperate.

Eleanor looked exactly the same.

Controlled.

Calm.

“You need to stop being weak, Richard.”

My father sighed.

“She’s my daughter.”

Eleanor leaned forward.

“And that is exactly why you’re losing control.”

My heart tightened.

They were talking about me.

My father looked uncomfortable.

“She’s a child.”

Eleanor smiled.

“Children become adults.”

A pause.

“And adults become problems.”

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

My father said:

“What do you want me to do?”

Eleanor answered:

“Make Erica the center.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

Michael looked at me.

I couldn’t speak.

The video continued.

“If Sarah believes she is loved less, she will stop fighting.”

My hands went numb.

Eleanor was explaining it.

Like a strategy.

Like a plan.

“She’ll become quiet.”

A pause.

“She’ll become grateful for scraps.”

I covered my mouth.

Because that was my childhood.

Not an accident.

Not a misunderstanding.

A plan.

The video continued.

My father looked guilty.

“She’ll hate us.”

Eleanor shrugged.

“She won’t.”

A cold smile.

“She loves you too much.”

The words destroyed me.

Because she was right.

I had loved them.

Even when they hurt me.

Then Erica entered the room.

She was young.

Maybe eight.

She looked scared.

Eleanor immediately changed her expression.

Sweet.

Gentle.

“Come here, darling.”

Erica walked closer.

Eleanor smiled.

“Do you want Mommy and Daddy to love you the most?”

The little girl nodded.

“Then you need to learn something.”

A pause.

“People only protect the person they think is fragile.”

The video ended.

I sat there.

Unable to move.

Michael reached for my hand.

This time I didn’t pull away.

Because I understood something.

The person who had been controlling my family…

Was not just someone who wanted power.

She understood weakness.

She knew exactly how to create it.

But there was another file.

One more.

Named:

FINAL.

I opened it.

It was an audio recording.

No video.

Just voices.

Eleanor.

And my grandmother.

My grandmother sounded tired.

“You went too far.”

Eleanor replied:

“No.”

A pause.

“I went exactly far enough.”

My blood ran cold.

My grandmother continued:

“You ruined two children.”

Silence.

Then Eleanor said:

“I saved the family.”

I felt tears forming.

My grandmother knew.

She confronted her.

She tried.

Then my grandmother said:

“I will tell Sarah.”

A long silence.

And then Eleanor’s voice changed.

“You won’t.”

My grandmother:

“Is that a threat?”

Eleanor:

“No.”

A pause.

“It’s a promise.”

The recording became quiet.

Then my grandmother whispered:

“You’re dangerous.”

Eleanor answered:

“And you’re sentimental.”

A pause.

“That’s why you’ll lose.”

The recording ended.

I sat in silence.

Because now I understood.

My grandmother wasn’t fighting one enemy.

She was fighting someone who had planned everything.

Then Michael noticed something.

“There’s another timestamp.”

I looked.

A hidden file.

Created recently.

Not fifteen years ago.

Today.

The file name:

SARAH MUST KNOW.

My hands shook.

I clicked.

It was Eleanor.

Recording herself.

Speaking directly.

Like she knew I would hear it.

“Sarah.”

My blood ran cold.

“I know you’re listening.”

Michael immediately reached for the keyboard.

But I stopped him.

“No.”

I needed to hear.

Eleanor continued.

“You always were the emotional one.”

I clenched my jaw.

“But you were also the strongest.”

A pause.

“That was your grandmother’s mistake.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“She loved you.”

A cold laugh.

“She believed love would protect you.”

Eleanor’s voice lowered.

“But love makes people predictable.”

My heart pounded.

“Your grandmother left you clues.”

A pause.

“I knew she would.”

Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.

“I didn’t destroy your family, Sarah.”

Silence.

“Your family was already broken.”

A pause.

“I simply taught everyone how to survive.”

The recording ended.

But before the screen went black…

One final message appeared.

Not audio.

Text.

A sentence.

Come to the old Hawthorne estate alone if you want the truth about your grandfather’s death.

Michael saw it.

“No.”

His voice was immediate.

“You are not going.”

I looked at the message.

At the years of lies.

At the woman who had controlled my life from the shadows.

Then I said:

“I am.”

Michael stared.

“Sarah.”

I looked at him.

“For years, everyone decided my story.”

A pause.

“Now I decide.”

But neither of us noticed the small detail.

The message had not been sent from Eleanor.

It had been sent from someone else.

Someone who wanted us to think it was her.

May you like

And when we discovered who…

Everything would change.
