Chapter 4 - The Deeper Vault

Before Rachel could lift her tablet to make the call, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the terminal console.
Rachel stopped, frowning at the screen. “Wait... boss.”
Daniel paused, half-turning back toward her. “What is it?”
“The encryption drive... it’s auto-indexing older sector backups that haven't been wiped according to the standard seven-day protocol.” Rachel’s fingers flew across the keyboard. “There’s an anomaly in the timestamp metadata for the study camera.”
Vanessa froze against the door, her eyes darting toward the screen with sudden, renewed terror. “No... turn it off. Turn it off right now!”
“What anomaly?” Daniel demanded, stepping toward the console.
“The camera wasn't just active today,” Rachel said, her voice dropping as she stared at the scrolling data lines. “Someone accessed the administrative override code to stream this specific room... eighteen months ago.”
The library went utterly dead. You could hear the faint hum of the server racks through the floorboards.
Eighteen months ago.
That was before Daniel and Vanessa were married. That was when they were merely engaged, and Vanessa was still living in her Manhattan penthouse.
“Pull the footage,” Daniel ordered, his voice like cracking ice.
Rachel hit enter.
The screen flickered, shifting from today’s date to a dark winter evening eighteen months prior. The timestamp read: November 14, 2024 — 2:14 AM.
The study on the screen looked slightly different—the desk layout was older, and the lighting was dimmer. But the room was the same.
The door opened.
A figure slipped inside. It wasn't Vanessa.
It was a man wearing a dark tailored suit and leather gloves. He moved with frightening familiarity, walking straight to Daniel’s safe hidden behind the oil painting of the estate. He spun the combination dial—not hesitating, not guessing—as if he had memorized the numbers by heart.
Marcus Reed stepped forward from the crowd, his face instantly draining of all color.
“Wait a minute...” Marcus whispered, his voice cracking. “I know that stance. That build...”
On the screen, the man pulled open the heavy steel door of the safe. He reached inside and pulled out a thick velvet jewelry box and a leather portfolio stamped with the Grayson family crest.
Then, the man turned his head toward the hidden camera lens.
The infrared night-vision light caught his face cleanly.
It was David Grayson.
Daniel’s younger brother. The brother who had supposedly drowned in the rocky cove six years ago—whose empty grave sat on the cliffside.
The entire room erupted into chaos. Shouts of disbelief and shock bounced off the mahogany bookshelves.

Daniel stood frozen in the center of the room, his eyes fixed on the screen, his entire world tilting violently on its axis.
“David...?” Daniel whispered, the name tearing out of his throat like glass. “That’s... that’s impossible.”
