Chapter 3 - The Paperwork of Betrayal

By three o'clock in the morning, the pediatric ward on the fourth floor was quiet. Ethan was tucked safely into a small hospital crib, an IV line taped securely to his tiny arm, sleeping under the warm hum of the heart monitor. His fever had broken completely, and the monitors showed steady, healthy brain activity.

I sat in a vinyl armchair beside his crib, wearing a pair of oversized hospital scrubs the nursing staff had given me to replace my wet clothes.

Standing near the foot of the bed was Detective Marcus Miller, a middle-aged investigator with a weathered face, graying hair, and an extremely thorough notepad. He had spent the last hour taking my statement, recording every detail of the evening's events with a look of growing, quiet rage.

“Let me make sure I have every detail of the record correct for the official criminal complaint, Mrs. Vance,” Detective Miller said, tapping his pen against the paper. “At approximately 11:15 PM, your husband, Daniel Vance, knowingly pulled off Interstate 95 onto an unlit shoulder during a flash flood warning.”

“Yes,” I said, keeping my eyes fixed on Ethan’s sleeping face.

“He then physically disarmed you of your mobile phone, prevented you from contacting 911, and ejected both you and your two-year-old child—who was actively undergoing a life-threatening medical emergency—from the vehicle?”

“He threw my phone into the storm drain,” I clarified, my voice icy calm. “And he unlocked the doors and told me to get out. He said he didn't have time to drive four minutes to the emergency room because his mistress, Vanessa, was waiting at the private terminal at Glendale Regional Airport.”

Detective Miller let out a long, heavy breath, shaking his head in disbelief. “We’ve already pulled the street camera footage from that stretch of road. The city traffic camera caught his black SUV pulling onto the shoulder, the door opening, and his vehicle accelerating away at high speed, leaving a pedestrian stranded in the rain. It’s all captured on high-definition video.”

“Where is he now?” I asked.

“Officers were dispatched to the private terminal at Glendale Airport two hours ago,” Miller replied, leaning against the wall. “His vehicle was found parked in the emergency drop-off zone, abandoned. We coordinated with airport security to check the flight manifests and terminal logs. Daniel Vance checked into a private charter jet flight heading to a private clinic in Miami at 12:45 AM, accompanying a female passenger identified as Vanessa Cross.”

A sharp, cruel laugh escaped my lips. He had actually done it. He had boarded a private jet to escort his mistress to a wealthy private medical facility while his legal son lay dying in an public trauma unit.

“Can you bring him back?” I asked.

“An arrest warrant has already been issued by a magistrate,” Detective Miller stated firmly. “Felony child endangerment resulting in near-fatal injury, domestic abuse by abandonment, and obstruction of emergency services. The moment that private aircraft touches down on the tarmac in Florida, local authorities and federal marshals will be waiting at the gate to take Mr. Vance into custody.”

The door to the hospital room swung open quietly, and a woman in a sharp gray business suit stepped inside. She carried a thick leather briefcase and had a fiercely determined look in her eyes.

“Laura?” she asked softly. “I’m Eleanor Vance. No relation to your husband, fortunately. I’m a senior partner at Vance & Sterling Family Law. Dr. Aris called me personally an hour ago. She told me what happened and said you needed the best legal protection money couldn't buy.”

I blinked, surprised. “I... I don't have my wallet or my money. Daniel controls all our family bank accounts.”

Eleanor smiled warmly, stepping into the room and setting her briefcase down on the table. “Dr. Aris and several members of this hospital staff have already created a legal defense fund for you, Laura. My fees are entirely covered. We are going to ensure that Daniel Vance never sets eyes on this child again, and that he loses every single asset he ever tried to protect.”

She pulled out a stack of preliminary legal documents, laying them out on the small bedside table.

“While Detective Miller handles the criminal side,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp corporate tone, “we are going to handle the civil execution. I’ve already drafted an emergency ex-parte petition for absolute custody, a temporary restraining order, and an immediate freeze on all joint, corporate, and private bank accounts associated with Daniel Vance and Westbridge Consulting.”

“Can you freeze his money right now?” I asked.

“The courts open in four hours,” Eleanor smirked. “Because of the severe criminal nature of the charges and the flight-risk status confirmed by the police department, a judge will sign the emergency asset freezing order before Daniel even finishes his breakfast in Miami. He spent his money booking a private jet, Laura. By noon today, his credit cards will be declined, his corporate accounts locked, and his luxury assets attached to a court-ordered lien.”

I looked at Eleanor, then at Detective Miller, and finally down at my beautiful, innocent son, whose small hand reached out in his sleep to touch my thumb.

The fear that had consumed me on that dark highway was entirely gone. In its place stood an absolute, unshakeable wall of resolve.

“Do it,” I told Eleanor. “Take everything.”
