Chapter 2 - The Tarmac Arrest

The morning sun rose over the private aviation terminal at Miami Executive Airport, throwing bright golden light across the rows of sleek corporate jets parked on the tarmac.
Inside the luxurious cabin of a Gulfstream charter, Daniel Vance stretched his neck, trying to ease the deep tension in his shoulders. He looked exhausted. He had spent the three-hour flight sitting next to Vanessa, holding a cold ice pack to her forehead, listening to her complain about the cramps in her stomach and the terrible turbulence over the coast.
The doctor who had met them briefly before takeoff in Glendale had assured Daniel that Vanessa was fine—it was merely a minor muscular spasm caused by stress and dehydration, and the pregnancy was entirely stable and unthreatened.
Daniel felt a sudden, sharp prick of annoyance in his chest. A minor spasm. He had rushed across the city, pushed his vehicle to its limits, and risked a massive argument with Laura for a minor cramp.
He pulled his secondary work phone out of his blazer pocket—his primary phone had run out of battery during the flight—and turned off airplane mode.
Instantly, the phone went wild.
Notifications flooded the screen in an endless, flashing stream. Over forty missed calls. Dozens of urgent text messages from his company's managing director, his bank's private wealth manager, his home security system, and several unknown numbers with local law enforcement tags.
His heart dropped into his stomach. He clicked on the most recent text message from his corporate managing partner:
Daniel, what the hell have you done?! The police were at the corporate headquarters an hour ago with a felony arrest warrant! All of your company accounts have been frozen by an emergency court order! Your name has been leaked to the press! Do not return to the office!
Daniel’s breath hitched in his throat. His hands began to shake violently. “No... no, this is a mistake... this is a misunderstanding...”
He quickly opened his mobile banking application to transfer funds to his personal checking account. A bright red warning box popped up on the screen instantly:
ACCOUNT ACCESS RESTRICTED BY COURT ORDER. CONTACT DISTRICT MAGISTRATE.
“Daniel, babe, what’s wrong?” Vanessa whined from the leather reclining seat behind him, putting on her dark sunglasses. “Is the private car here yet? My back hurts, and I want to get to the resort clinic immediately.”
Daniel didn't answer her. He scrambled to his feet, rushing toward the front exit door of the aircraft as the flight attendant unlatched the heavy air-stairs.
“Sir, please wait until the ground crew secures the stairs—” the attendant began.
Daniel shoved past her, pushing the door open, desperate to reach the terminal taxi lane and figure out what was happening to his life.
The moment he stepped out onto the metal air-stairs, the bright Florida morning was shattered by the sharp, blaring wail of multiple police sirens.
Four black law enforcement SUVs tore across the tarmac at high speeds, surrounding the private jet in a tight box formation. Their tires screeched against the hot asphalt, throwing up dark rubber marks.
Eight armed officers from the local police department and the United States Marshals Service leaped out from the vehicles, their sidearms drawn and pointed directly at Daniel’s chest.
“Daniel Vance!” a voice boomed out through a bullhorn from the lead police cruiser. “Step down the stairs slowly with your hands above your head! Do it now!”
Daniel froze on the top platform of the stairs, his face instantly draining of all color. His heart pounded against his ribs like a trapped bird.
“Wait! Stop!” Daniel screamed, his voice high-pitched and hysterical, his hands flying up into the air. “There’s been a huge mistake! I’m an executive with Westbridge Consulting! I haven't done anything wrong!”
“Step down the stairs, Mr. Vance!” the Marshal commanded, stepping closer, his weapon trained squarely on Daniel’s center mass. “You are under arrest pursuant to an emergency felony warrant issued by the State of Colorado for Attempted Manslaughter, Felony Child Endangerment, Domestic Abuse, and Destruction of Evidence!”
Vanessa stepped out onto the door platform behind him, seeing the fleet of police cars and the drawn weapons. She let out a piercing scream, dropping her designer handbag onto the cabin floor.
“Daniel! What is happening?!” she shrieked. “Who are these people?!”
“Shut up, Vanessa!” Daniel panicked, snapping at her for the first time. He looked down at the officers, his voice trembling uncontrollably. “Look, my wife is lying to you! Whatever she told you, she’s crazy! She was hysterical because our kid had a tiny fever!”
The lead Marshal walked up the air-stairs, grabbed Daniel by the collar of his expensive designer suit, spun him around violently, and slammed his face against the metal side of the aircraft fuselage.
CLICK. CLICK.
The cold, heavy steel handcuffs snapped tightly around Daniel’s wrists, biting into his skin.
“A tiny fever?” the Marshal whispered harshly into Daniel’s ear as he dragged him down the stairs toward the waiting police car. “Your two-year-old son went into full cardiac arrest on the side of the highway, you piece of garbage. He nearly died in a puddle of water while you were flying first class.”
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening in absolute horror as the weight of those words finally broke through his thick wall of arrogance.
“He... he stopped breathing?” Daniel stammered, his knees buckling beneath him. “Is... is Ethan dead?”
May you like
The Marshal didn't answer. He shoved Daniel unceremoniously into the hard plastic back seat of the police cruiser, slamming the door shut against his frantic, terrified screams.
Through the tinted glass window, Daniel watched in absolute helplessness as the officers approached Vanessa, informing her that all credit cards and charter accounts associated with Daniel Vance had been legally impounded, leaving her stranded on the hot tarmac with no money, no transport, and no support.
