Chapter 10 - The Legacy of Light

One year later.

The autumn air in Maine was crisp and sweet, painted in brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.

Inside the cozy, firelit living room of the coastal house, a grand piano sat near the tall bay window.

Corrie sat at the bench, guiding five-year-old Lily’s small fingers across the white keys, playing a simple lullaby.

Beside them, sitting in a comfortable leather rocking chair near the stone hearth, was Domenico. In his lap rested their newborn son, Mateo Eduardo Moretti—a healthy, dark-haired baby boy who was sleeping peacefully wrapped in a blue wool blanket.

Domenico gently rocked the chair, his dark eyes filled with a profound, quiet contentment as he watched his wife and daughter at the piano.

Rosa walked into the room carrying a tray of hot apple cider and cinnamon biscuits, setting it on the coffee table.

“He looks just like you, Domenico,” Rosa whispered, smiling down at the sleeping baby.

“No,” Domenico replied softly, looking across the room at Corrie, whose hazel eyes were shining in the amber firelight. “He has his mother’s heart.”

Corrie finished the lullaby, kissed Lily’s forehead, and walked over to the hearth. She sat on the rug beside Domenico’s chair, resting her head against his knee.

Domenico reached down with his hand, his thumb gently caressing her cheek, his fingers weaving through her soft hair.

Four months of terror at Hallowmere Manor had once felt like an eternal night. The cold stairwells, the dripping rags, the fear of Whitlock’s footsteps—it had all felt like a trap from which she would never escape.

But as she looked up at her husband, her daughter, her newborn son, and the warm home filled with laughter and light, she knew the truth.

The darkness had not swallowed her. It had brought her home.

“Happy anniversary, Corrie,” Domenico whispered softly.

Corrie reached up, taking his hand, pressing a gentle kiss to his knuckles.

“Happy anniversary, my love,” she replied.

And outside, as the autumn moon rose high over the quiet harbor, the light inside the house burned bright, warm, and unbroken forever.
