Chapter 9 - The Harbor of New Beginnings

Six months later.
The summer sun beamed down brightly over the harbor of Portland, Maine.
A beautiful white coastal home sat atop a green grassy hill overlooking the bay, surrounded by blooming blue hydrangeas and a white wooden fence.
On the front porch, four-year-old Lily was running around in circles, wearing a yellow sunhat, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Domenico had bought her for her birthday. Her chest showed a small, faded surgical scar—the only remaining memory of a heart defect that was now completely cured.
From the kitchen window, Rosa Delgado leaned out, calling out in Spanish, holding a plate of warm churros.
“Lily! Come eat before the dog gets them!” Rosa yelled happily.
Lily giggled and sprinted up the wooden porch steps, grabbing a churro and hugging Rosa’s waist.
Out on the green lawn, Corrie stood holding a sketchbook, drawing the outline of the harbor ships gliding across the water. She wore a simple linen dress, her hair flowing freely in the warm summer wind.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.
Domenico leaned down, resting his chin on her shoulder, kissing her cheek softly. He was wearing a simple white polo shirt and jeans, looking relaxed, healthy, and completely at peace.
“What are you drawing, Mrs. Moretti?” Domenico murmured into her ear.
Corrie turned her head, smiling up at him, resting her hand over his forearms.
“I’m drawing our new library,” she smiled, pointing to the wooden frame of a two-story addition being built onto the side of their house. “A real library. With windows that let the sunshine in.”
Domenico chuckled softly, leaning in to press a warm kiss to her lips.
“No secret floorboards?” he teased.
May you like
“Not a single one,” Corrie laughed, wrapping her arms around his neck.
They stood together on the hill, watching their daughter play on the porch, surrounded by the warmth, safety, and love they had fought through the darkest shadows to build.
