PART 4 — The Secret Daniel Buried

The name on the envelope stared back at me.

Emma Carter.

For three years, that name had been spoken in the Carter household like a tragedy.

A mistake.

A painful memory nobody wanted to revisit.

Daniel always said the same thing whenever someone mentioned her.

"Emma made her choice."

"She left."

"She doesn't want anything to do with us."

And everyone believed him.

Because Daniel was good at creating stories.

He always made himself the hero.

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

"Where was this found?"

I asked the investigator.

"In Daniel Carter's private office."

He paused.

"Hidden behind a false panel."

My stomach dropped.

Hidden.

That word again.

The Carters didn't solve problems.

They buried them.

My father stepped beside me.

"Open it."

I looked at him.

"You think I should?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

His voice softened.

"Because this family has hidden enough from you."

The cathedral was still full of people.

But nobody was watching the bride anymore.

They were watching a family collapse.

The wedding decorations looked almost cruel now.

The flowers.

The candles.

The perfect white dress.

Everything designed to celebrate a beginning.

Instead, we were standing in the middle of an ending.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The paper was old.

Folded many times.

The first line made my heart stop.

Dear Olivia...

I froze.

Olivia.

My mother's name.

My mother who died five years ago.

I looked at my father.

He saw my expression.

"What is it?"

I handed him the letter.

His hands shook when he read the first few words.

Because my mother was not supposed to be part of this.

The letter continued:

"If you are reading this, then Daniel failed to destroy the truth."

I stopped breathing.

Failed?

Destroy?

I kept reading.

"Olivia, I know what happened. I know what the Carter family did."

My vision blurred.

The cathedral disappeared.

The guests disappeared.

Only those words existed.

Five years earlier...

Before my mother's death...

She had been investigating something.

Something connected to Carter Holdings.

Something she never told anyone.

Not my father.

Not me.

Because she was afraid.

The letter continued.

"Daniel was not always the person he is now."

That sentence surprised me.

Because despite everything...

Emma still saw him as a person.

Not a monster.

Not completely.

"When we were younger, Daniel discovered what our father was doing."

"He wanted to expose him."

"He came to me because he was scared."

"But fear changed him."

My father whispered:

"No..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He looked devastated.

"I knew something was wrong."

"But I never knew this."

I continued reading.

"Daniel tried to protect himself by joining them."

"At first, he told himself he was only pretending."

"But power changes people."

My hand trembled.

Because suddenly everything became more complicated.

Daniel was guilty.

There was no excuse.

But maybe...

He wasn't born cruel.

Maybe he became that way.

The letter continued.

"The worst thing he did was not the money."

"Not the lies."

"It was what he did to me."

I stopped.

My heart pounded.

"What did he do?"

My father didn't answer.

He couldn't.

I kept reading.

"He made everyone believe I was unstable."

"He convinced the family I was dangerous."

"He took away my access to everything."

"Then he made me disappear."

The room spun.

Disappear.

That wasn't leaving.

That was something else.

The investigator looked at me.

"We found additional evidence."

I turned.

"What evidence?"

He hesitated.

"Records showing Emma Carter was placed in a private facility under a different name."

My mouth opened slightly.

"She's alive?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

A wave of emotion hit me.

Anger.

Shock.

Confusion.

Emma was alive.

The sister Daniel claimed abandoned everyone...

Had been trapped.

My father looked at me.

"We need to find her."

I nodded.

But before we could move...

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then:

A woman's voice.

Weak.

Careful.

"Is this Eleanor Hayes?"

My heart stopped.

"Yes."

The voice trembled.

"My name is Emma."

Everything around me disappeared.

"Emma Carter?"

Silence.

Then:

"Yes."

I stepped away from everyone.

"Where are you?"

A shaky breath.

"I don't have much time."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Tell me."

Her voice lowered.

"Daniel doesn't know I'm calling."

My blood went cold.

"Why?"

Because the answer meant something terrible.

"Because if he finds out..."

She paused.

"I won't survive another time."

I closed my eyes.

The woman Daniel said was gone...

Was afraid of him.

Still.

After all these years.

"Emma."

My voice softened.

"You're safe now."

A small, broken laugh came through the phone.

"No."

She whispered.

"I'm not."

The cathedral suddenly felt colder.

"Why?"

Her next words changed everything.

Because they revealed the final secret.

"The man you married..."

A pause.

"He wasn't the only Carter who hurt people."

I looked at Daniel being escorted away.

The man who had destroyed my life.

The man whose secrets were finally exposed.

And I realized something terrifying.

I thought the wedding was the end of his story.

May you like

But it wasn't.

It was only the beginning.
