PART 5 — The Last Carter Secret

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Emma's words stayed in my mind.
He wasn't the only Carter who hurt people.
I looked across the cathedral.
Daniel was gone.
The officers had already taken him outside.
The guests were leaving slowly, whispering, confused, shocked, afraid.
Everyone believed the nightmare was over.
But I knew better.
Because I could still hear Emma's voice.
"Emma..."
I held the phone tighter.
"Tell me what happened."
There was silence.
Long enough that I wondered if the call had ended.
Then she whispered:
"Three years ago, I found the files."
My eyes moved toward the folder still sitting in my father's hands.
"What files?"
"The same ones your mother was looking for."
My heart stopped.
My mother.
The woman who had always been described as gentle.
Kind.
Someone who loved helping others.
She had been investigating the Carter family.
And she had died.
"What did the files contain?"
Emma's breathing became uneven.
"Everything."
"The illegal accounts."
"The fake investments."
"The people they paid."
"And..."
She stopped.
"And what?"
Her voice cracked.
"The truth about your mother's death."
The world went silent.
Even though people were still moving around me.
Even though the cathedral doors were opening and closing.
I heard nothing.
Only those words.
My mother's death.
"No."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Because some part of me had always accepted the official story.
A car accident.
A rainy road.
A tragic mistake.
My mother was gone.
And I had spent years learning how to live with that.
But Emma continued.
"Your mother was close to exposing them."
My hands started shaking.
"Who?"
She didn't answer immediately.
And that hesitation was enough.
Because I already knew.
"The Carters?"
A long pause.
Then:
"Yes."
I felt my father's hand touch my shoulder.
He didn't hear Emma.
But he saw my face.
He knew something was wrong.
"What happened?"
I looked at him.
I couldn't speak.
Not yet.
Emma whispered:
"Daniel wasn't supposed to marry you."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He wasn't supposed to love you."
A chill moved through me.
"He was supposed to use you."
My stomach turned.
The bruise.
The lies.
The marriage.
The entire relationship.
Had it all been planned?
"No."
I shook my head.
"That's not possible."
Because I remembered Daniel before.
The way he held my hand.
The nights we laughed.
The promises.
The moments that felt real.
Emma's voice softened.
"Maybe not at first."
"What?"
"Maybe in the beginning, he really did care."
A painful silence.
"But then he learned what your family owned."
"And he chose."
I closed my eyes.
Because that hurt more than anything.
Not knowing that someone never loved you.
But knowing maybe they did...
And still chose to destroy you.
"Where are you, Emma?"
"I'll come get you."
"No."
Her answer was immediate.
Too afraid.
"Why?"
"Because he may not be gone."
I froze.
"What?"
"Daniel."
She whispered.
"He always has another plan."
I looked toward the cathedral entrance.
The police cars outside.
The officers.
The cameras.
"He was arrested."
Emma gave a quiet, broken laugh.
"Eleanor..."
"Daniel Carter has escaped consequences his entire life."
"He doesn't lose."
"He survives."
My father took the phone gently.
"Emma."
His voice was calm.
"I'm Charles Hayes."
The line went silent.
Then Emma gasped.
"Mr. Hayes?"
"Yes."
"You need to listen carefully."
My father looked at me.
"Daniel may have been arrested."
"But we need to know if anyone else is involved."
Emma didn't answer.
That scared me more.
"Emma?"
Finally she whispered:
"Vivian."
My blood ran cold.
His mother.
"What about Vivian?"
Emma sounded terrified.
"She was the one controlling everything."
"The money."
"The cover-ups."
"The lies."
"Daniel thought he was the mastermind."
A pause.
"But he wasn't."
I remembered Vivian sitting in the front row.
Watching me reveal everything.
Not shocked.
Not scared.
Almost annoyed.
Because she knew.
Then Emma said:
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
Her voice lowered.
"Your wedding."
I frowned.
"What about it?"
"The attack wasn't because Daniel lost control."
My breathing stopped.
"What are you saying?"
"He hurt you because he knew today would expose him."
I felt dizzy.
"He knew?"
"Yes."
"He wanted you to break."
"He wanted you to cancel the wedding."
"Disappear."
"Stay silent."
I looked down at my torn veil.
The symbol of the woman Daniel expected me to be.
Weak.
Quiet.
Obedient.
But he made one mistake.
He underestimated what happens when someone stops being afraid.
"Emma."
My voice became steady.
"Tell me where you are."
This time...
She didn't refuse.
She gave me an address.
Two hours later, we found her.
Not in a prison.
Not in a hospital.
In a small apartment outside the city.
Alone.
Hidden.
Waiting.
When Emma opened the door...
She looked nothing like the Carter family.
No diamonds.
No expensive clothes.
No arrogance.
Just a tired woman who had spent years surviving.
The moment she saw me...
She started crying.
"I'm sorry."
I shook my head.
"For what?"
"For not saving you."
The words broke my heart.
Because she looked at me like I was the victim.
Not her.
I stepped forward.
And hugged her.
Because sometimes two people who were hurt by the same family don't need explanations.
They just understand.
Months later...
The Carter empire collapsed.
The investigation uncovered everything.
Preston Carter was convicted for fraud.
Vivian faced charges for conspiracy and financial crimes.
Daniel's case became one of the largest scandals the city had seen.
But the biggest surprise came later.
Emma testified.
Not to destroy her family.
To finally free herself.
As for me...
I never wore the wedding dress again.
I kept the torn veil.
Not as a reminder of Daniel.
As a reminder of the moment I chose myself.
People still ask me:
"Why did you do it publicly?"
"Why didn't you leave quietly?"
I always give the same answer.
Because silence is powerful...
Until it protects the wrong person.
On the day I tore off my veil...
Everyone thought I was exposing my shame.
They were wrong.
May you like
I was exposing his.
And that was the first day I became free.
