Part 6: The Target Was Always Me

The words hit harder than the gunshot.
“He’s here for you.”
I looked at my father.
For years, I had believed the worst thing that could happen was losing him.
I never imagined I would discover that someone had spent my entire life protecting me from a war I didn’t even know existed.
The ballroom felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
And suddenly every person in the room looked like a stranger.
Even Vanessa.
Especially Vanessa.
Because I realized something.
My entire life, I thought my father was hiding wealth.
But he wasn’t.
He was hiding enemies.
“Dad.”
My voice shook.
“What does Adrian want from me?”
My father didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
“Tell me.”
He looked at me.
And I saw the pain in his eyes.
“He wants what your mother left behind.”
I frowned.
“What did she leave?”
My father looked at the photograph.
“Not money.”
“Not shares.”
“Not property.”
“Something much more dangerous.”
“What?”
He whispered:
“The truth.”
The police moved quickly.
Guests were separated.
Security searched every entrance.
The entire estate became a controlled scene.
But none of that made me feel safe.
Because someone had walked into my wedding.
Someone had sent a message.
Someone had known exactly where I would be.
I walked toward my father.
“Start from the beginning.”
He nodded.
Finally.
“The night your mother died…”
He stopped.
Like the memory physically hurt.
“She wasn’t driving home from dinner.”
My heart tightened.
“What?”
“She was going to meet someone.”
“Who?”
“Adrian.”
The room went silent.
“She discovered he had been working with Richard Hale.”
I looked at Richard.
His face changed.
Just slightly.
My father continued.
“They were moving money through fake companies.”
“Your mother found proof.”
“Enough proof to destroy them.”
I swallowed.
“And then?”
My father looked down.
“She called me.”
“I was supposed to meet her.”
A pause.
“But I was late.”
The guilt in his voice was unbearable.
“By twenty minutes.”
He looked at me.
“Twenty minutes was all they needed.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My father nodded.
“Yes.”
“They forced her off the road.”
My chest tightened.
“And Adrian?”
“Disappeared.”
I turned toward Richard.
“You worked with him.”
It wasn’t a question.
Richard looked older suddenly.
The powerful businessman.
The man who had insulted my father.
The man who had believed money could control everyone.
Now he looked trapped.
“I made mistakes.”
I laughed.
A bitter sound.
“Mistakes?”
“You helped destroy my family.”
He looked at Vanessa.
“I did what I had to.”
Vanessa stepped away from him.
“Dad…”
He ignored her.
“Your father doesn’t understand.”
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Understand what?”
“That the world is not fair.”
Richard looked around.
“People like us survive by doing what others won’t.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
“You survive by hurting people.”
The words landed.
Then a security officer rushed in.
“Mr. Mercer.”
My father turned.
“What?”
“We found a vehicle.”
“Where?”
“Behind the estate.”
My blood went cold.
“Was anyone inside?”
The officer hesitated.
“No.”
“But we found this.”
He handed my father an envelope.
My father opened it.
Read the note.
Then his face changed.
“What?”
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was familiar.
The same message.
The same cold confidence.
You spent twenty years hiding him.
Now let him choose.
The father or the son.
My stomach dropped.
“What does this mean?”
My father grabbed my shoulders.
“Daniel.”
His voice was urgent.
“You need to leave.”
“No.”
“This isn’t a discussion.”
“I’m not leaving you.”
His eyes filled.
“That’s exactly what he wants.”
“What?”
“He wants me to protect you.”
“He wants me distracted.”
A pause.
“And he wants me to make a mistake.”
A sound came from outside.
A car alarm.
Then shouting.
The security team moved.
Everyone froze.
The estate doors opened.
A man walked inside.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like he owned the place.
Everyone recognized him.
Even though almost nobody had ever met him.
Because my father had spent twenty years talking about him.
Adrian Mercer.
My uncle.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
He looked older.
Different.
But his eyes…
They were the same as mine.
That was the worst part.
He looked at me.
Not my father.
Me.
“Daniel.”
My name sounded strange coming from him.
My father stepped between us.
“Don’t.”
Adrian smiled.
“There he is.”
The man who survived.
The man who played dead.
The man who destroyed everything.
“You always were dramatic, Charles.”
My father’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to call me that.”
Adrian ignored him.
He looked at me.
“You have no idea what he’s done to you.”
I stared.
“What are you talking about?”
My father turned.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Adrian laughed.
“Of course he says that.”
“He spent your whole life lying.”
My father went still.
Because it was true.
He had lied.
Even if he had reasons.
Even if he had protected me.
The fact remained.
I had never known the truth.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Your father told you I killed your mother.”
I looked at my father.
“He did.”
Adrian smiled.
“And did he tell you why she was really meeting me?”
Silence.
My father’s expression changed.
A tiny movement.
But I saw it.
“Dad?”
He didn’t answer.
Adrian’s smile grew.
“There it is.”
“What aren’t you telling me?”
My father looked away.
And that scared me.
Because there was still another secret.
After twenty years.
After everything.
My father still had one more thing hidden.
Adrian whispered:
“Ask him what your mother discovered about you.”
My blood froze.
“About me?”
My father’s face turned pale.
“Adrian, stop.”
But Adrian only smiled.
Because he knew.
May you like
He had finally found the one thing my father feared.
The truth about me.
