Part 7: The Truth About My Birth

The room became silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence where everyone knows something terrible is about to be revealed.
I looked at my father.
“About me?”
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My entire life had been built on things he refused to say.
First my mother.
Now this.
I felt something inside me breaking.
“Dad.”
My voice was low.
“Look at me.”
Slowly, he did.
His eyes were full of regret.
“I was going to tell you.”
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“When?”
“When was the right time?”
“After another twenty years?”
He closed his eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone always says that.”
I looked at Adrian.
“Tell me.”
My father immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.”
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But I needed the truth.
I had spent my whole life loving a story.
Not knowing if it was real.
Adrian watched us with satisfaction.
“You see?”
He smiled.
“He does it again.”
“Even now.”
“He still thinks you’re a child.”
My father’s voice became dangerous.
“Enough.”
But Adrian continued.
“Your mother discovered something before she died.”
He looked at me.
“She discovered your father wasn’t the only one keeping secrets.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian reached into his coat.
The security team immediately raised their weapons.
But he slowly pulled out a folder.
Old.
Worn.
Yellowed from time.
“I found this years ago.”
He tossed it onto a table.
“It belonged to your mother.”
My father looked terrified.
“No.”
That single word told me everything.
I walked toward the folder.
My father grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.”
I looked at him.
“Let me go.”
He did.
Slowly.
Like he was accepting something he couldn’t stop.
I opened the folder.
The first page was a medical document.
My eyes scanned it.
And then stopped.
I read the words again.
And again.
Because my brain refused to understand.
DNA PATERNITY TEST
I felt the air disappear.
No.
That was impossible.
My hands started shaking.
I looked at my father.
He was crying.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Just broken.
“Dad…”
The word barely came out.
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
My chest tightened.
“What is this?”
No answer.
I looked back at the paper.
The name.
The name of the biological father.
It wasn’t Charles Mercer.
It wasn’t the man who raised me.
It was…
Adrian Mercer.
I stepped backward.
The entire room blurred.
“No.”
I whispered.
“No.”
My father moved toward me.
“Daniel.”
“Don’t.”
My voice cracked.
“Don’t come closer.”
He stopped.
Because he understood.
Everything I knew was falling apart.
My father.
My uncle.
My mother.
My entire identity.
All of it.
Adrian looked almost pleased.
“Now you understand.”
I looked at him.
“You’re lying.”
He shook his head.
“I wish I was.”
My father finally spoke.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
I looked at him.
“Was it true?”
Silence.
That was the answer.
My heart shattered.
“Was it?”
He nodded.
Once.
Small.
Devastating.
“Yes.”
The world became noise.
People talking.
Police moving.
Security shouting.
But I heard nothing.
Only my father’s voice.
“I raised you.”
“I loved you.”
“You are my son.”
The words hurt.
Because I believed them.
I wanted to believe them.
But suddenly every memory felt different.
The way my father looked at me.
The way he protected me.
Was it love?
Or guilt?
“Why?”
I asked.
He wiped his eyes.
“Because your mother asked me to.”
I froze.
“What?”
He stepped closer.
“You were six months old.”
“Adrian was already dangerous.”
“Your mother knew.”
“She knew what he had become.”
I looked at Adrian.
He said nothing.
For the first time, he looked angry.
My father continued.
“She found out Adrian was involved in things that could get you killed.”
“She wanted you away from him.”
“So she asked me to raise you.”
My breathing slowed.
“She chose me?”
My father nodded.
“Yes.”
A tear fell from his eye.
“She told me…”
He paused.
“She told me you deserved a father who would love you.”
My heart broke.
Because that sounded like my mother.
The woman I barely remembered.
The woman who had loved me enough to disappear.
I turned toward Adrian.
“You knew?”
He looked at me.
“I found out later.”
“And you still stayed away?”
His jaw tightened.
“I was trying to survive.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Twenty years?”
“You expect me to believe that?”
He looked away.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
“I made mistakes.”
“No.”
My voice became colder.
“You made choices.”
Silence.
Then Adrian said:
“You don’t know the whole story.”
I stared.
“What else?”
He looked at my father.
Then at me.
“Your mother didn’t die because of what I did.”
My father’s face changed.
“What?”
Adrian whispered:
“She died because she discovered who was really controlling everything.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Adrian looked toward the crowd.
Toward all the powerful people who had been watching.
Then his eyes stopped.
On one person.
Richard Hale.
Everyone turned.
Richard froze.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.”
“You were always the smartest man in the room, Richard.”
Richard stepped back.
“You’re lying.”
My father stared at him.
And slowly…
Everything clicked.
The wedding.
The plan.
Vanessa.
The insults.
The attack.
It wasn’t about money.
It was about getting close.
I looked at Richard.
“You planned all of this?”
He didn’t answer.
But his silence was enough.
Then he smiled.
A small, cold smile.
And said:
“Congratulations, Daniel.”
“You finally figured it out.”
He looked at my father.
“But you’re too late.”
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
Richard reached into his pocket.
And pulled out his phone.
He pressed one button.
A sound came from outside.
A helicopter.
Everyone looked toward the windows.
Richard smiled.
“Because while you were discovering your family secrets…”
“I was finishing the last part of the plan.”
The lights flickered.
And every phone in the room received the same message.
One sentence:
MERCER INTERNATIONAL HAS BEEN COMPROMISED.
My father looked at the screen.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“Daniel…”
His face turned pale.
“He didn’t come for revenge.”
May you like
A pause.
“He came to take everything.”
