PART 3 — The Secret My Husband Buried

The word stayed in my mind.

Revenge.

Not love.

Not money.

Not a simple betrayal.

Revenge.

I stood in the hotel hallway, holding my wedding ring between my fingers.

Two hours ago, I had looked at this ring and thought:

I am the luckiest woman alive.

Now I wondered:

What exactly did I marry?

“Emma?”

My father’s voice pulled me back.

“Are you still there?”

“Yes.”

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Calm.

Too calm.

“Dad…”

“Yes?”

“Tell me everything.”

There was silence.

Then he said:

“I’m sending you a file.”

My phone buzzed.

An email appeared.

No subject.

No explanation.

Just one attachment.

ETHAN MILLER — BACKGROUND REPORT

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

The first page looked normal.

Name.

Age.

Education.

Employment history.

Then I scrolled.

And stopped.

Because there was a section I had never seen.

FAMILY CONNECTIONS.

My eyes moved down.

And my heart sank.

Father: Thomas Miller.

I knew the name.

Everyone in Chicago knew the name.

Thomas Miller was a businessman who lost his company after a massive financial scandal twenty years ago.

The newspapers called it fraud.

My father called it something else.

A war.

I kept reading.

Cause of collapse: Investigation initiated by Richard Carter.

My father.

I stared at the screen.

Ethan’s father lost everything because of mine.

And Ethan…

married me to get revenge.

“Dad…”

My voice cracked.

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

“You knew his father hated our family?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me marry him?”

A painful silence followed.

“I wanted to believe you were wrong.”

I closed my eyes.

That hurt more than I expected.

My father was always protective.

But this time...

he watched me walk into a trap.

“There’s more,” he said.

I scrolled further.

Another document.

A photo.

Ethan.

Young.

Maybe twenty years old.

Standing beside a man.

His father.

And underneath:

Private meeting — Three years ago.

The date.

The date was before I met Ethan.

My stomach twisted.

He had planned this before he even knew me.

I whispered:

“He didn’t accidentally find me.”

“No.”

“He searched for me.”

“Yes.”

I felt something inside me break.

Not heartbreak.

Something colder.

Trust.

Then my father said:

“Emma, there’s something else.”

I looked at the phone.

“What?”

“Your apartment.”

I froze.

“What about it?”

“The documents Ethan prepared.”

“Yes.”

“They’re fake.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“The ownership transfer.”

My father’s voice became sharp.

“He was never trying to legally take your home.”

I frowned.

“Then what was the plan?”

A pause.

Then:

“He wanted you to sign something else.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

“Power of attorney.”

I stopped breathing.

“He wanted control over everything.”

I looked back at the wedding suite.

The papers.

The folder.

The perfect plan.

They weren’t just stealing an apartment.

They wanted access to my entire life.

My accounts.

My companies.

My inheritance.

Everything my parents built.

Everything my mother left me.

A sound interrupted my thoughts.

The elevator.

Someone was coming up.

I looked toward the hallway.

My father noticed.

“Emma?”

“I have to go.”

“No.”

His voice became urgent.

“Listen to me.”

“If Ethan finds you—”

The elevator doors opened.

I froze.

Because Ethan stepped out.

Alone.

No Vanessa.

No security.

Just him.

He looked at me.

And for a moment…

he looked exactly like the man I married.

Tired.

Heartbroken.

Lost.

“Emma.”

My hand tightened around my phone.

“What are you doing here?”

He stopped several feet away.

“I came to find you.”

“Why?”

His eyes moved to my wedding ring.

Then back to me.

“Because I need to explain.”

I laughed softly.

“Explain what?”

“The baby?”

His face changed.

Surprise.

Then confusion.

“What baby?”

I stared.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“Emma, what did my mother tell you?”

I said nothing.

His expression shifted.

Fear.

Real fear.

And suddenly…

I wasn’t sure.

Was he acting?

Or did he really not know?

“You knew about everything,” I said.

His face went pale.

“Everything?”

“The apartment.”

“The papers.”

“The plan.”

Silence.

Then he whispered:

“You heard.”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

And for the first time…

he didn’t pretend.

“I was going to tell you.”

I almost laughed.

“When?”

“After tonight.”

“After I signed?”

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“I loved you.”

Those words made me angry.

“Don’t.”

“I did.”

“Don’t say that.”

His eyes became red.

“I know what it looks like.”

“It looks like you used me.”

He swallowed.

“I did.”

The honesty shocked me.

“But not for the reason you think.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

He looked around the hallway.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your father told you about my father.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know my father died believing he was destroyed by your family.”

“Yes.”

Ethan nodded.

“And I believed him.”

“Until?”

His jaw tightened.

“Until I found out he lied.”

I froze.

“What?”

“My father wasn’t ruined by Richard Carter.”

Silence.

“Your father exposed him.”

“Yes.”

“But he didn’t know the full truth.”

I stared.

“Ethan, what are you saying?”

He stepped closer.

“My father wasn’t the mastermind.”

A chill went through me.

“Then who was?”

His eyes met mine.

And the answer made my entire body freeze.

“Your mother.”

The hallway went silent.

My mother.

The woman who died when I was twenty.

The woman who taught me kindness.

The woman I trusted more than anyone.

“No.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I didn’t believe it either.”

“Then why?”

“Because I found the documents.”

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

“What documents?”

“The original files.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“Hidden in your family estate.”

My heart raced.

“My mother left evidence?”

“Yes.”

“Evidence of what?”

He whispered:

“That my father was framed.”

I couldn’t speak.

Everything I knew was changing.

My husband was a liar.

But maybe…

he wasn’t the only one.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

“Emma, stop listening to Ethan.”

My blood froze.

Another message appeared.

“He’s doing exactly what his father taught him.”

Then a photo.

A woman.

Standing outside the hotel.

Watching me.

I zoomed in.

And my hands went numb.

Because I recognized her.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She wasn’t Ethan’s mistress.

She was someone I thought was dead.

May you like

Someone who had no reason to be there.

My mother.
