PART 4 — The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For five seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

I stared at the photo.

Again.

And again.

My fingers shook as I zoomed in.

The woman standing outside the hotel entrance…

the woman looking directly at the camera…

was impossible.

Because I knew her face.

I had seen that face in old photographs.

In memories.

In the dreams I still had about childhood.

My mother.

Victoria Carter.

The woman everyone told me had died twelve years ago.

“Emma?”

Ethan’s voice pulled me back.

I quickly locked my phone.

“What did you see?”

“Nothing.”

The lie came out automatically.

His eyes narrowed.

“You’re lying.”

I almost smiled.

Funny.

The man who had lied to me for two years could recognize a lie instantly.

“Now you know how it feels.”

His face fell.

My father was still on the phone.

“Emma?”

I answered quietly.

“Dad.”

“Who is with you?”

I looked at Ethan.

“My husband.”

A pause.

Then my father’s voice changed.

“Leave.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Emma, leave him.”

Ethan heard.

His expression hardened.

“Your father still doesn’t trust me.”

I looked at him.

“Should he?”

He had no answer.

Then the hotel lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The hallway went dark for a moment.

When the lights returned…

Ethan was looking toward the elevator.

His face changed.

“Someone is here.”

I turned.

The elevator doors slowly opened.

No one stepped out.

Just an empty elevator.

But on the floor inside was an envelope.

My name written on it.

EMMA.

I didn’t move.

Neither did Ethan.

Finally, he whispered:

“Don’t touch it.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because this is how my father used to do things.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“He always left messages when he wanted someone to know he was watching.”

I slowly picked up the envelope.

Ethan grabbed my wrist.

“Emma.”

I pulled away.

“You don’t get to protect me now.”

His eyes hurt.

But he let go.

Inside the envelope was a single sheet of paper.

Only one sentence.

“The truth you are searching for has been inside your house for twelve years.”

Below it was an address.

My family estate.

The old Carter mansion.

The place I hadn’t visited since my mother died.

My hands went cold.

Because the message wasn’t from Ethan.

It wasn’t from my father.

It was signed:

V.C.

Ethan saw it.

His face went pale.

“No.”

“What?”

He stepped back.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

He looked at the initials.

“Because those are your mother’s.”

Everything suddenly connected.

The hidden documents.

The revenge.

The lies.

The wedding.

The fake pregnancy.

Someone wanted us fighting each other.

But why?

I looked at Ethan.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I am.”

“No.”

My voice became sharper.

“Tell me everything you didn’t tell me.”

He looked away.

A long silence.

Then:

“My mother found out I was investigating my father’s death.”

“Vanessa?”

He nodded.

“She warned me to stop.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew the truth.”

“What truth?”

His jaw tightened.

“That my father wasn’t the only person involved.”

I waited.

“Who else?”

He looked at me.

“Your mother.”

Again.

That name.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who taught me right from wrong.

The woman who held my hand when I cried.

Could she really have destroyed another family?

My phone rang.

Dad.

I answered.

“Emma.”

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Where are you?”

“The hotel.”

“Leave now.”

“Dad, I know about Mom.”

Silence.

A long, terrifying silence.

Then:

“Who told you?”

My heart dropped.

“You knew?”

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.”

Finally, he whispered:

“Emma…”

“Your mother isn’t dead.”

The world stopped.

I gripped the phone.

“What?”

“I found out months ago.”

My eyes moved to Ethan.

He looked shocked too.

“She contacted me.”

My voice shook.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know if I could trust her.”

A pause.

“And because she asked me to protect you.”

Protect me.

From what?

I asked the question out loud.

“What is happening?”

My father exhaled.

“Your mother discovered something before she disappeared.”

“What?”

“She discovered someone inside our family was stealing from Carter Development.”

I swallowed.

“Who?”

Silence.

Then:

“Vanessa.”

Ethan’s mother.

My blood ran cold.

My father continued.

“She helped Thomas Miller destroy himself.”

“What?”

“Your husband’s father wasn’t innocent.”

I looked at Ethan.

He looked stunned.

“Vanessa manipulated everything.”

My father’s voice became darker.

“She caused the scandal. She moved the money. She created the evidence.”

My hand covered my mouth.

“So Ethan’s revenge…”

“He was lied to.”

I looked at Ethan.

For the first time…

I saw the truth.

He wasn’t the only victim.

A loud sound came from downstairs.

Glass breaking.

Then shouting.

Ethan immediately moved toward the stairs.

“What was that?”

I followed.

“No.”

He stopped.

“Emma.”

But I was done hiding.

Done running.

We walked down together.

The ballroom area was empty.

The wedding decorations were still there.

The flowers.

The lights.

The perfect fake beginning.

And standing in the middle of it…

was Vanessa.

Holding a folder.

Smiling.

“I was wondering how long it would take.”

Ethan froze.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“Disappointing.”

His face changed.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

She smiled.

“I raised you.”

The cruelty in her voice was worse than anger.

“You should know by now.”

I stepped forward.

“You planned everything.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Not everything.”

She tilted her head.

“Your mother made the first move.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Vanessa smiled.

“And I finished it.”

She opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Contracts.

And one final page.

A confession.

Signed.

By my mother.

I grabbed it.

My eyes scanned the words.

And then I saw the date.

It was written one day before her supposed death.

The final line read:

“If anything happens to me, protect Emma from the people closest to her.”

I looked up.

Vanessa was no longer smiling.

Because she realized something.

The one thing she feared.

I had found the truth.

The next morning, the world woke up expecting a scandal.

A cheating husband.

A broken marriage.

A greedy family.

But instead, they got something else.

Evidence.

Bank records.

Secret recordings.

Confessions.

The truth about the Carter and Miller families was exposed.

Vanessa was arrested.

The people who helped her disappeared.

The empire she tried to steal collapsed around her.

Months later, I stood in the same house where my mother raised me.

But this time…

I wasn’t the same woman.

Ethan and I didn’t magically fix everything.

Some wounds don’t disappear because someone says sorry.

Trust had to be rebuilt.

Slowly.

Honestly.

Every day.

One evening, Ethan asked me:

“Do you regret marrying me?”

I looked at him.

At the man who betrayed me.

The man who also saved me.

The man who finally told the truth.

I answered:

“I regret that you lied.”

He nodded.

“But not that I found the truth.”

My wedding night was supposed to be the beginning of my marriage.

Instead, it became the night I discovered a war that had been waiting for me.

They thought they trapped a naive bride.

They thought they found someone easy to control.

They forgot one thing.

I was a Carter.

And when someone tries to destroy my family…

I don’t break.

May you like

I uncover the truth.

And I make sure everyone who buried it has to face it.
