Chapter 6 - The Fall of Miller & Sons

By two o'clock that afternoon, news of NexoCloud's catastrophic collapse had spread through the local business community like a wildfire. Rumors that the company’s core patents had been lost and that its primary lender was foreclosing on its assets sent NexoCloud’s public valuation plummeting to zero.
In the oak-paneled office of Miller & Sons Construction, Harold Miller—Jonathan’s father—was sitting behind his heavy desk, smoking a cigar, celebrating what he assumed was his son’s multi-million-dollar deal.
The door to his office slammed open. Florence rushed inside, her face pale, holding her phone in a trembling hand.
"Harold!" she cried out. "Something’s wrong! Jonathan’s secretary called! She said federal marshals and process servers are at NexoCloud’s offices seizing their computers!"
Harold frowned, setting his cigar in an ashtray. "What are you talking about? Jonathan was at Vanguard Capital signing a 120 million dollar deal today!"
Before Florence could answer, Harold’s landline desk phone rang with an urgent, sharp tone. He picked it up.
"Harold Miller," he said.
"Harold, it’s Richard from First National Bank," a cold voice spoke over the line. "I’m calling to inform you that your commercial credit line of eight million dollars has been immediately called in for full re-payment."
Harold stood up so fast his chair rolled back into the wall. "What?! Richard, what are you talking about? Our line of credit isn't due for renewal until November!"
"A secondary clause in your credit agreement dictates that if a key guarantor—in this case, your son Jonathan Miller—faces major civil asset forfeiture or felony charges, the bank reserves the right to freeze all associated commercial accounts," Richard explained mechanically. "Your accounts are locked as of five minutes ago."
Harold’s phone dropped from his hand, falling onto his desk blotter.
"Harold? What did he say?" Florence gasped, her voice shrill with rising panic.
Before Harold could respond, his office door opened again. Three men in sharp suits stepped inside, led by Arthur Vance.
"Harold Miller?" Arthur asked, adjusting his glasses.
"Who the hell are you?" Harold demanded, his chest heaving as anger overcame his confusion. "Get the hell out of my office before I call security!"
"I am Arthur Vance, senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Associates, representing Charlotte Davis—formerly known to you as your daughter-in-law," Arthur said smoothly, handing Harold a sheaf of legal notices.
Florence let out an outraged scream. "That little orphan girl?! What does she have to do with my husband's business?!"
Arthur looked at Florence with total, unadulterated contempt. "Mrs. Miller, the woman you ordered to hand-wash dirty underwear last night happens to be the President of Vanguard Capital. She also happens to be the primary investor in the Municipal Transit Authority's fifteen-billion-dollar expansion project—the very project your husband’s firm was contracted to handle as a subcontractor."
Harold’s eyes went wide. His breath caught in his throat. "The MTA expansion...? We invested our entire life savings into securing the equipment for that job..."
"The MTA has terminated Miller & Sons' subcontract effective immediately, citing ethical violations and failure to maintain required credit assurances," Arthur said coldly. "Furthermore, Ms. Davis has purchased your firm's primary supply-chain debt. You owe twelve million dollars to her supply logistics company, due within twenty-four hours."
Harold fell backward onto his desk, clutching his chest, gasping for air. "Twelve million... we don't have twelve million... we'll be bankrupt by tomorrow..."
"You will indeed, Mr. Miller," Arthur agreed cheerfully. "In fact, by my calculations, your house, your trucks, your equipment, and your personal savings will be fully liquidated by the county sheriff within thirty days."
Florence rushed to her husband’s side, staring at Arthur with wide, terrified eyes. "You can't do this! This is evil! She was married to my son! They're family!"
Arthur paused at the door, turning his head back to look at Florence.

"Family, Mrs. Miller? You treated a brilliant, powerful woman like a dog on her wedding night. You taught your son that violence against women was an acceptable family tradition. Now, you are going to learn what happens when the woman you tried to crush owns the world you live in."
Arthur turned and walked out, leaving Florence screaming in hysterical despair while Harold collapsed into his chair, weeping over his ruined life's work.
