Chapter 8 - The Desperate Plea

The next morning, the sun rose over a different world for the Miller family.

In the waiting room of the Fulton County Detention Center, Florence Miller sat on a hard plastic chair, wearing a faded coat, her hair messy and unwashed. She looked twenty years older than she had on her son’s wedding day. Beside her sat her younger son, Luke, who was staring blankly at the floor, clutching his hands.

Their home had been served with an emergency asset freezing order two hours earlier. Their cars had been towed, their bank cards declined at the local grocery store, and their family name was plastered across every local news station under headlines detailing corporate fraud and domestic violence.

The heavy steel door opened, and a guard escorted Jonathan into the visiting room.

He looked unrecognizable. He wore a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed to a heavy chain around his waist. His face was pale, his eyes bloodshot and swollen from crying all night in a holding cell with twenty other men.

"Jonathan!" Florence cried out, rushing to the glass partition.

Jonathan sat down heavily on the stool, picking up the heavy black plastic phone receiver. Florence picked up hers on the other side.

"Mom..." Jonathan wept, his forehead touching the glass. "You have to get me out of here... please, Mom... get a bail bondsman... pay my bail..."

Florence’s eyes welled with hysterical tears. "Jonathan... we can't... the bank froze all our accounts this morning. Your father collapsed at the office... he’s in the hospital right now under police guard because of his company's debts... we don't have a single dollar..."

Jonathan stared at his mother through the glass, a sudden, blinding rage flaring behind his eyes.

"This is your fault!" Jonathan screamed into the phone receiver, his face twisting into a grotesque mask of fury. "This is all your fault!"

Florence gasped, pulling back in shock. "Jonathan! How can you say that to your mother?!"

"You brought that stupid bucket into the room!" Jonathan yelled, banging his handcuffed fists against the glass. "You told me to put her in her place! You told me she was nobody! You told me she was just an orphan temp! She was the President of Vanguard Capital! She was going to make me a billionaire! And you ruined it with your disgusting, pathetic, backward rules!"

"I... I was trying to make sure she was a good wife to you!" Florence sobbed, clutching her chest.

"I am going to prison for thirty years because of you!" Jonathan roared, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Get out of here! I don't ever want to see your face again! Get out!"

The guard behind Jonathan stepped forward, grabbing his shoulder and forcing him off the stool. "That's enough. Time's up."

Jonathan was dragged back through the steel door, his screams of rage echoing down the concrete corridor until the door slammed shut with a heavy, final metallic bang.

Florence collapsed onto the floor of the visiting room, wailing uncontrollably, while her younger son, Luke, sat in silent, terrified shock, realizing that his family's pride had burned their entire world to the ground.
