PART 2 — THE DOOR OPENED AT THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT

PART 2 — THE DOOR OPENED AT THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT

The elevator doors slid open with a soft metallic chime.

Expensive heels clicked across the marble hallway.

Celeste Cole entered first, wrapped in a silver evening gown beneath a white fur coat despite the warm autumn night. Behind her walked two men in tailored suits carrying leather briefcases.

The Cole family's attorneys.

Celeste smiled before she even reached the bedroom.

"I knew she'd need supervision," she said smugly. "A girl from a middle-class family doesn't understand how marriage works in this family."

Then she stepped through the doorway.

Her smile disappeared.

Adrian was lying face-down on the floor.

One arm twisted safely behind his back.

His expensive tuxedo was wrinkled.

The leather whip lay several feet away.

And I was calmly kneeling beside him, still wearing my wedding dress.

For three full seconds...

Nobody moved.

Celeste blinked.

"What..."

One of the attorneys lowered his briefcase.

The other looked from Adrian to me, clearly trying to understand what had happened.

"Adrian?"

Celeste rushed forward.

"My son!"

Adrian looked up, his face bright red with humiliation.

"Get her off me!"

Celeste turned toward the lawyers.

"Do something!"

Neither attorney moved.

Instead, the older one quietly asked,

"Mrs. Cole... did she attack him?"

"I don't know!"

Celeste shouted.

"She's obviously violent!"

I smiled politely.

"Actually..."

I nodded toward Adrian's phone on the sofa.

"His own recording can answer that."

Everyone looked toward the phone.

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

"No."

He struggled beneath my hold.

"Don't touch it."

That reaction told the lawyers everything.

The older attorney walked over and picked up the phone.

The recording was still running.

He pressed replay.

The room filled with Adrian's confident voice.

"Rule one: you never question me."

"Rule two: you ask permission before leaving this house."

"Rule three: your salary goes into my account."

Silence.

The attorney continued watching.

The whip cracked against the marble floor.

Adrian raised it.

Then came my voice.

"And if I refuse?"

"You won't."

A second later...

The video captured Adrian swinging first.

Then losing.

Completely.

The entire encounter lasted barely ten seconds.

No punches.

No unnecessary force.

Only controlled defensive movements.

When the recording ended, neither attorney spoke.

Celeste forced a laugh.

"This proves nothing."

"It proves self-defense," the older attorney replied calmly.

She stared at him.

"What?"

"He threatened her with a weapon."

He pointed toward the whip.

"She used only the amount of force necessary to stop him."

Adrian groaned.

"Whose side are you on?"

"I'm on the side of the law."

The words landed like a slap.

Celeste's face darkened.

"You work for this family."

"I work for whoever follows the law."

The younger attorney quietly picked up the handwritten rulebook.

He flipped through several pages.

Each rule became worse than the last.

Rule Seven:

A wife will not maintain private bank accounts.

Rule Twelve:

Any pregnancy decisions belong to the husband.

Rule Twenty-One:

A wife who disobeys will receive appropriate discipline.

The younger attorney slowly closed the notebook.

His expression had become unreadable.

"Who wrote this?"

"I did," Adrian muttered.

Celeste immediately interrupted.

"He was joking."

"Were you?" the attorney asked.

Adrian stayed silent.

Meanwhile, I finally released his arm and stood.

He scrambled backward across the floor, keeping several feet between us.

Interesting.

Ten minutes earlier, he had believed I would fear him.

Now...

He was afraid I might touch him again.

I walked to the dresser and carefully removed the tiny diamond necklace.

Celeste frowned.

"What are you doing?"

I placed it on the table.

The tiny red recording light blinked.

The older attorney narrowed his eyes.

"That's a camera."

"Yes."

Adrian looked horrified.

"You recorded this?"

"I did."

His face drained of color.

"You set me up."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I gave you the opportunity to reveal who you really were."

Celeste stepped toward me.

"You manipulative little—"

The older attorney raised one hand.

"Mrs. Cole."

She stopped.

"You should be careful."

She glared at him.

"Why?"

"Because every word spoken after entering this room may also be recorded."

Celeste immediately fell silent.

I reached beneath the bed and picked up the envelope.

The annulment petition.

I placed it on the coffee table beside a fountain pen.

"Adrian."

He looked at me with open hatred.

"I'm not signing anything."

"Really?"

I slid another folder beside it.

This one was much thicker.

He frowned.

"What's that?"

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Medical reports.

Police incident summaries.

Hospital records.

Celeste's confident expression disappeared.

She recognized one of the women immediately.

"Melissa..."

Adrian's former fiancée.

The woman everyone believed had simply "called off the wedding."

I calmly spread more documents across the table.

Bruises.

Broken ribs.

A fractured wrist.

Threatening text messages.

Bank transfers.

Signed confidentiality agreements.

Adrian stared at them as if seeing ghosts.

"Where did you get those?"

"I spent six months looking."

Celeste whispered,

"Impossible."

"No."

I looked directly into her eyes.

"It was actually much easier than you imagined."

The older attorney slowly picked up one hospital report.

Then another.

Finally, he removed his glasses.

"Mr. Cole..."

His voice had become noticeably colder.

"Were these allegations ever disclosed during the marriage license application?"

Adrian said nothing.

The attorney asked again.

"Were they?"

"No."

The answer was barely audible.

The attorney sighed.

"You understand the legal consequences of concealing documented domestic violence allegations before marriage?"

Adrian swallowed hard.

Before he could answer...

Someone knocked on the still-open bedroom door.

A uniformed concierge stood outside, looking nervous.

"Mrs. Cole..."

He looked at Celeste.

"There are detectives downstairs."

Everyone froze.

"They're asking for..."

He checked the note in his hand.

"Ms. Elena Harper."

Every eye turned toward me.

I smiled politely.

"I invited them."

The detectives weren't arriving to investigate me.

They were arriving to arrest the man who believed our wedding night would be the beginning of my obedience.

May you like

Instead...

It had become the first night the truth finally caught up with him.
