PART 8 — MY FATHER'S BIGGEST SECRET

PART 8 — MY FATHER'S BIGGEST SECRET
The photograph slipped from my fingers.
It landed silently on the library floor.
No one bent to pick it up.
Everyone was staring at the image.
My father.
Richard Cole.
Standing shoulder to shoulder.
Young.
Confident.
Smiling like brothers.
For a long moment, I couldn't breathe.
Melissa finally broke the silence.
"That's your father?"
I nodded slowly.
"It is."
Detective Sarah Mitchell looked at me carefully.
"Did you know they knew each other?"
"No."
"My father never mentioned the Cole family."
The detective looked back at the photograph.
"Then someone has been lying for a very long time."
My phone vibrated again.
Another message.
Unknown number.
Only four words.
Ask him about Madrid.
No signature.
No explanation.
Just four words.
Madrid.
I had never heard my father mention Spain except during business trips.
Why Madrid?
Mitchell looked at me.
"I think it's time we speak to your father."
Three hours later...
I was standing outside my childhood home.
A quiet estate overlooking the lake.
Nothing like the extravagant Cole mansion.
My father, Daniel Harper, opened the front door before I knocked.
He smiled.
Then he saw my face.
The smile disappeared.
"Elena?"
He looked at the detectives behind me.
"What happened?"
I didn't answer.
Instead, I held up the old photograph.
His face lost every trace of color.
"Where did you get that?"
"You know him."
It wasn't a question.
My father closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Finally...
He stepped aside.
"Come in."
The living room was silent.
Mitchell placed the photograph on the coffee table.
My father stared at it as though it belonged to another lifetime.
"I hoped..."
He whispered.
"...you would never see this."
I sat across from him.
"Who is Richard Cole?"
He laughed bitterly.
"The man who destroyed more lives than anyone will ever know."
He poured himself a glass of water.
His hands shook.
"I met Richard twenty-three years ago."
"We were partners."
Melissa frowned.
"Business partners?"
He nodded.
"We built an investment company together."
"He was brilliant."
"Charismatic."
"The kind of man everyone trusted."
His eyes darkened.
"Until I discovered how he really made his money."
Mitchell leaned forward.
"What did you find?"
My father looked directly at her.
"He wasn't investing."
"He was blackmailing."
Silence.
"He collected secrets."
"Affairs."
"Political scandals."
"Corporate fraud."
"He never threatened anyone directly."
"He simply became indispensable."
"He knew enough about powerful people that they kept paying him forever."
Melissa whispered,
"And the women?"
My father's jaw tightened.
"I didn't know."
"I swear I didn't."
"I left before that."
I asked the question that had haunted me since reading the letter.
"What happened in Madrid?"
He closed his eyes.
"I betrayed him."
The room became silent again.
"It was supposed to be our biggest deal."
He spoke slowly, choosing every word.
"A European investment group wanted to buy our company."
"The negotiations took place in Madrid."
"I discovered Richard planned to steal the investors' money and disappear."
"What did you do?"
"I warned them."
"You exposed him?"
He nodded.
"The deal collapsed."
"Richard lost everything."
Mitchell frowned.
"But he rebuilt."
"Yes."
"He disappeared."
"Changed his identity."
"Married Celeste."
"Created the Cole empire."
"And spent twenty years preparing revenge."
I stared at my father.
"So..."
"He targeted me."
My father couldn't meet my eyes.
"Yes."
The word barely escaped his lips.
"He knew I had a daughter."
"He knew I loved you."
"He once told me..."
My father's voice broke.
"'One day you'll understand what it feels like to lose the person you love most.'"
Tears burned my eyes.
"So my marriage..."
"...was never an accident."
"No."
"He planned it."
"He wanted to punish me through you."
I stood up so quickly the chair tipped backward.
"You knew someone was watching us?"
"I suspected."
"You suspected?"
My voice echoed through the room.
"And you never told me?"
He looked devastated.
"I had no proof."
"I thought if I stayed quiet..."
"...he would eventually give up."
I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"He didn't give up."
"He married me to his son."
My father covered his face.
"I know."
"I'm sorry."
"I've regretted Madrid every day of my life."
Detective Mitchell interrupted gently.
"Mr. Harper."
"Why didn't you go to the police years ago?"
He looked up.
"I did."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
"I filed reports."
"I submitted evidence."
"I named Richard."
"What happened?"
He smiled bitterly.
"The files disappeared."
"The witnesses disappeared."
"The investigators retired."
"He had already bought the system."
Melissa slowly nodded.
"That explains everything."
Just then...
The front gate alarm sounded.
One of my father's security guards rushed inside.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"A package."
"No sender."
"It was left outside the gate."
The bomb squad was called immediately.
After examination, they confirmed it contained no explosives.
Only a polished wooden box.
Inside...
Was an antique chessboard.
Every piece was already arranged.
White.
Black.
A game in progress.
Mitchell frowned.
"What does this mean?"
My father stared at it for several seconds.
Then whispered,
"Oh no..."
I looked at him.
"You recognize it?"
He nodded.
"Richard and I played chess every Friday."
He pointed toward the board.
"This position..."
"...is impossible."
"Why?"
He swallowed hard.
"Because this was the exact game we never finished."
Silence filled the room.
He reached toward one white knight.
Underneath it lay a folded note.
He opened it.
His hands began trembling.
"What does it say?"
He slowly looked at me.
"He wants a rematch."
I frowned.
"A chess match?"
My father shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward the window, where darkness had begun covering the lake.
"He doesn't mean chess."
"He means our lives."
At that exact moment, every phone in the room vibrated simultaneously.
Mine.
My father's.
Detective Mitchell's.
Melissa's.
The same message appeared on every screen.
Tomorrow. Noon. Grand Central Station. Come alone if you want the truth about Adrian's real mother.
The room went completely still.
Because everyone believed Celeste was Adrian's mother.

Apparently...
Richard Cole was about to prove that even that was a lie.
