Chapter 2 - The Cousin’s Price

The morning light filtering through the high windows of the Beacon Hill study was cold, gray, and unforgiving. I didn't sleep. I sat on the hardwood floor with the gray folder spread open around me like a crime scene, reading every line, every forged signature, and every medical notation until my eyes burned.

At 7:00 a.m., my personal phone rang. The caller ID showed my father’s name: Arthur Bennett.

I swallowed hard, clearing the dry rasp from my throat before answering. "Dad?"

"Claire, where are you?" His voice was tight, carrying the sharp, authoritative edge that had commanded boardrooms for forty years, though I could hear the underlying tremor of a man in poor health. "Daniel called me two hours ago. He was almost unintelligible. He said something happened at the hospital with Adam and Lauren. What is going on?"

I looked down at Dr. Vance’s signed sterilization directive lying on my lap. My father suffered from advanced congestive heart failure; telling him the full, monstrous truth right now would kill him before noon.

"Dad," I said, keeping my voice as steady as steel. "Adam and Lauren have been having an affair for over a year. Daniel found out last night at the hospital."

A long, suffocating silence hung on the line. I heard my father inhale sharply.

"Dear God," he breathed. "Lauren? Daniel’s wife?"

"Yes."

"Where is Adam now?"

"He's at Mass General. Dad, I need you to do something for me, and I need you not to ask questions yet. I need you to freeze all emergency capital expenditure accounts for Bennett Global Partners immediately. Do not let Beatrice or Adam’s lawyers access the secondary reserve."

"Claire... what did he do?" my father asked, his tone dropping from anger into deep concern. "What did they do to you?"

"I'm securing the evidence now," I said softly. "I will be at the main office by ten o'clock. Gather the executive committee. But do not tell Daniel yet. He's not in a condition to handle this."

"All right," he whispered. "Come home to the office, sweetheart. We'll fix this."

After hanging up, I gathered the contents of the gray folder, placed them in a fireproof leather briefcase, and changed into a crisp navy tailored power suit. I pulled my hair back into a tight bun, applied a bold red lipstick to cover my pale lips, and looked at myself in the mirror.

The grieving, desperate woman who had cried over negative pregnancy tests for two years was gone. In her place stood the former Chief Financial Officer of Bennett Global Partners.

My first stop was not the family headquarters on State Street. It was the private clinic of Dr. Harrison Vance in Chestnut Hill.

The Northeast Reproductive Medicine Center was an opulent, private facility catering to Boston’s elite. I walked past the marble fountain in the lobby and strode straight into the executive wing. Dr. Vance’s receptionist started to stand up, but I pushed past her desk and opened the heavy mahogany door to his private office.

Dr. Harrison Vance—a smooth-faced man in his late fifties with silver hair and gold-rimmed spectacles—looked up from his laptop in surprise.

"Claire!" he said, instantly putting on a warm, clinical smile as he stood up. "My dear, what a surprise. I heard you were out of the country—"

I closed the door behind me, locked it with a deliberate click, and walked over to his grand oak desk. I placed the leather briefcase on the leather surface, opened it, and pulled out the original gray folder.

I slid the single sheet bearing his signature—Code-B directive: Permanent sterility achieved—directly across his desk.

The warm, professional smile on Dr. Vance’s face froze. His eyes scanned the header, and the color drained from his lips so fast it looked as if he had been struck.

"Claire... this... this is a confidential medical record," he stammered, his fingers trembling as he reached for it.

I placed my palm flat over the paper, pinning it to the desk.

"You forged my signature to destroy my embryos," I said, my voice dropping an octave into an icy, measured tone. "You administered chemical hormone suppressants under the guise of fertility boosters to render me permanently infertile. You did this at the instruction of your cousin, Beatrice Bennett, and my husband."

"I... you don't understand the medical context—"

"I understand medical malpractice, fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to inflict grievous bodily harm," I interrupted sharply. "I spent six hours reviewing the Massachusetts criminal code last night, Harrison. For what you did in this room, you will not only lose your medical license; you will spend the next fifteen to twenty years in a state penitentiary."

Dr. Vance sank back into his leather executive chair. Sweating profusely now, he loosened his silk tie. "Beatrice told me... she told me you agreed to it," he lied desperately, his voice cracking. "She said you had a hereditary psychological condition and that you didn't want to pass it on to a child! She said Adam was protecting you!"

"You know that's a lie," I said coldly. "You did it for the two million dollars wired from Vance Holdings to your offshore account in Grand Cayman."

He squeezed his eyes shut, bowing his head into his hands. He knew he was trapped.

"What do you want?" he whispered hoarsely.

"I want the complete, unredacted digital audit logs for my medical file," I said, leaning over his desk. "I want the original audio recordings of your meetings with Beatrice and Adam. And I want a sworn, notarized affidavit detailing every instruction they gave you, every dollar they paid you, and every drug you administered to me."

May you like

"If I sign that, my life is over," Vance rasped.

"If you don't sign it by noon today," I replied, pulling my phone from my pocket, "I walk straight out of this office and hand these documents to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You have one hour, Harrison. Choose."
