Chapter 4 - The Offshore Counter-Strike

Beatrice blinked, her sneer faltering slightly. "What are you talking about?"

I picked up my tablet and cast its screen onto the large digital display at the front of the boardroom.

"You and Adam spent eighteen months moving funds out of our primary accounts, assuming I was too distracted by my failed pregnancies to notice," I explained, leaning against the table with total composure. "You set up nine shell companies—Vance Holdings, Apex Management, Gold Coast Capital, and six others registered in the British Virgin Islands."

A series of complex financial flowcharts appeared on the screen, showing every transaction, every bank code, and every IP address used to transfer the money.

"What you forgot, Beatrice, is that before I was Adam’s wife, I was the Chief Financial Officer of this firm for seven years," I continued. "I wrote the original compliance protocols for our international transfers. When Adam used his home tablet to access those shell accounts, he left his master encryption tokens active on our secure home network."

Beatrice turned her head sharply toward her handbag, where her personal phone sat silent.

"Last night, while Adam was in the hospital bed and you were picking out your camel coat," I said, "I used those master tokens to access all nine offshore entities. I didn't just freeze them, Beatrice. I executed an emergency corporate recall under the anti-fraud provisions of our trust charter."

A red notification flashed on the big screen: TRANSFER COMPLETE — $34,200,000 RESTORED TO BENNETT GLOBAL TRUST.

"Every dollar you embezzled—including the $195,000 you used to buy that sapphire pendant around your neck—has been clawed back into the main Bennett trust account," I said. "Your short positions on our stock are completely unhedged. When the market opens tomorrow, you and Adam won't just be broke; you will owe the clearing exchanges over twelve million dollars in margin calls."

Beatrice’s face turned an ugly, mottled gray. She swayed on her feet, clutching the edge of the glass table for balance.

"You... you ruined us," she choked out.

"No," I replied softly. "You ruined yourselves the moment you decided my life, my body, and my family were collateral damage for your greed."

My brother Daniel stood up slowly from his chair. The hollow, defeated look in his eyes had vanished, replaced by an icy, dangerous clarity. He walked around the table until he was standing inches from Beatrice.

"Where is Lauren?" Daniel asked softly.

Beatrice swallowed hard, shrinking back from his presence. "She... she went back to your apartment in Back Bay to pack her things."

Daniel looked at me. "Claire, do you have everything you need for the police?"

I held up the leather briefcase. "Everything is here. The medical forgery, the wire fraud logs, the audio confession, and the corporate embezzlement records."

"Good," Daniel said. He looked down at Beatrice one last time. "The police are already waiting downstairs. I called them ten minutes ago."

At that exact moment, the heavy oak boardroom doors swung open. Two uniformed officers from the Boston Police Department, accompanied by two investigators from the SEC, stepped into the room.

"Beatrice Bennett?" the lead investigator asked, pulling a warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and corporate conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the officers clicked the steel handcuffs around Beatrice’s wrists, her regal composure dissolved completely. She began screaming, her voice shrill and pathetic, as she was led down the carpeted hallway toward the elevators.

My father sat back in his executive chair, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. I walked over to him, kneeling beside his chair and wrapping my arms around his shoulders.

"It's over, Dad," I whispered. "It's over."

"I'm so sorry, Claire," he sobbed, clutching my hands. "I brought those people into our lives. I let them do this to you..."

"You didn't know," I said gently. "None of us knew. But we are going to rebuild."
