Chapter 3 - The Black Bentley

“We have to move, right now,” Emma hissed, panic spiking her voice into a sharp whisper as she grabbed Lily’s arm. “Someone just came in through the front. They’re inside the house!”

The old man on the floor stiffened. The pale blue of his eyes dilated with pure, unadulterated terror. He gripped Lily’s sleeve even tighter, pulling her close so she could hear his next words over the sound of approaching footsteps echoing through the ceiling vents above.

“Listen to me,” the man commanded, his voice acquiring a sudden, urgent authority that belied his physical weakness. “The man upstairs… he’s not a burglar. He’s the one who put me here. If he finds out you opened this room, we won't leave this property alive.”

“Who is he?” Lily demanded, refusing to back down even as her own heart hammered against her ribs. “What’s your name?”

“Ethan,” the man gasped, wincing as he tried to shift his cramped, dehydrated limbs. “Ethan Reynolds.”

The name dropped into the small, dusty room like a lead weight.

Lily’s breath caught. Reynolds. The original family. The builders of Hillrest Manor. But Ethan Reynolds wasn't just a historical footnote; he was a reclusive billionaire tech investor who had dominated the financial headlines a decade ago before completely dropping out of public view, rumored to have retreated to a private estate in Europe or locked himself away in a medical facility.

Except he hadn't been in Europe. He had been locked away right here, in his own ancestral home, hidden behind a false wall in the cellar.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

The footsteps overhead were moving toward the cellar door. The heavy iron latch of the main staircase groaned as someone tested it.

“Get him up,” Emma whispered frantically, slipping her shoulder under Ethan’s left arm while Lily took his right. Together, the two sixteen-year-olds heaved the emaciated billionaire to his feet. Ethan groaned, his legs shaking violently, unable to bear his own weight after what looked like weeks—or months—of confinement.

“I can walk… just support my right side,” Ethan muttered through gritted teeth.

They scrambled out of the hidden alcove just as the cellar door upstairs was thrown open with a resounding crash. A shaft of harsh daylight cut down the wooden staircase, accompanied by the cold, clipped voice of a man shouting into a cell phone.

“I want the perimeter swept again. The side gate was unlatched. Someone’s on the grounds.”

The voice was smooth, cultured, and dripping with ruthless menace.

Lily, Emma, and Ethan ducked behind a massive stack of rotting wooden storage crates near the foundation wall, holding their breath as heavy footsteps began descending the cellar steps. The beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight swept across the concrete floor, missing their hiding spot by barely six feet.

“Check the coal room,” a second, heavier voice grunted from the top of the stairs.

“I’m checking it now,” the first man replied. His footsteps drew closer, crunching steadily on the plaster dust.

Emma closed her eyes, silently praying, her fingers intertwined with Lily’s cold hand. They were trapped in a dead-end cellar with an injured, half-starved man, cornered by men who clearly meant to kill anyone who discovered their secret.

Lily’s eyes scanned the dim surroundings, searching for an alternative escape route. Behind the storage crates, half-hidden behind a ragged mildewed tarp, was a small, ground-level coal delivery window, rusted shut with iron brackets but framed by cracked, brittle mortar.

It was their only chance.

With a silent nod to her sister, Lily signaled toward the window, bracing herself to make a desperate break for freedom before the flashlight beam found them in the dark.
