Chapter 8 - The Siege of Hillrest

The blackout didn't last more than three seconds before emergency diesel generators kicked in, but those three seconds were all the federal tactical team needed.
Boom!
The massive oak front doors of Hillrest Manor blew inward under a synchronized breaching charge, showering the grand foyer with splintered mahogany and white dust.
“FBI! Federal warrant! Nobody move!”
Shouts echoed across the vaulted ceilings, accompanied by the heavy, synchronized thud of tactical boots, the tactical clatter of flashbangs detonating in the hallways, and the authoritative commands of Special Agent Vance directing his men through the smoke.
Down in the sub-basement, Lily and Emma flattened themselves against the brick wall of the utility corridor as the heavy steel security doors throughout the mansion automatically slammed shut and locked into their failsafe lockdown positions—trapping Julian’s private security guards in isolated pockets across the estate.
“We did it,” Emma breathed, lowering the wire-cutters, her knees suddenly feeling like water.
“We’re not done yet,” Lily said, grabbing her sister’s arm. “Look.”
At the end of the corridor, heading away from the cellar stairs and toward the private underground wine cellar that connected to the carriage house, a tall figure in a dark tailored suit was sprinting in a blind panic.
Julian Vance.
Even in the dim emergency lighting, his silver hair and expensive silhouette were unmistakable. He carried a heavy leather briefcase in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other, cursing furiously as his encrypted comms earpiece crackled with static.
“Julian!” Lily shouted impulsively, stepping out from the shadows of the utility corridor.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. He spun around, his face twisted in an ugly snarl of rage and desperation, the pistol swinging up to level directly at Lily’s chest.
“You little rat bastards,” Julian hissed, his voice trembling with psychotic fury. “You should have stayed in town.”
Before Julian could squeeze the trigger, a heavy shadow lunged out of the cross-corridor behind him with the silent, terrifying speed of a striking predator.
Ethan Reynolds.
Despite his weeks of starvation and physical trauma, Ethan slammed his full weight directly into Julian’s back, sending the briefcase flying across the stone floor and knocking the pistol from Julian’s grip.
The two cousins crashed hard onto the damp concrete, rolling in a tangle of limbs, grunts, and furious blows.
“Julian!” Ethan roared, pinning his cousin’s arm behind his back with a surge of adrenaline born from decades of pent-up betrayal. “It’s over! The house is surrounded!”
Julian thrashed wildly, trying to buck Ethan off, but his expensive suit restricted his movement. He managed to land a sharp elbow to Ethan’s ribs, causing the billionaire to gasp in pain and loosen his grip just enough for Julian to scramble to his feet, lunging toward his dropped pistol on the floor.
“Look out!” Emma screamed.
Lily didn't think. She snatched the heavy iron fire poker that had been left leaning against the coal chute wall, ran forward with a fierce battle cry, and swung it with all her might across the back of Julian’s knees.
With a sharp crack, Julian’s legs buckled beneath him. He collapsed face-first onto the stone floor, howling in agony as his kneecap gave way.
Before he could push himself back up, heavy tactical boots swarmed the corridor. Three federal agents dropped onto Julian, zip-tying his wrists behind his back with military precision and slamming him face-down against the cold concrete.
Special Agent Vance stepped forward, holstering his service weapon, and looked down at Julian with absolute disgust before turning his gaze toward Ethan, who was leaning against the brick wall, coughing and clutching his bruised ribs.
“Mr. Reynolds, you’re safe,” Agent Vance said crisply. Then he shifted his gaze down to Lily and Emma, who stood side by side, holding the iron poker between them like a banner of victory.
“And I take it these are the two civilian consultants who assisted with the tactical breach?” the agent asked with a faint, appreciative smirk.

Ethan smiled, wiping a drop of blood from his lip, and nodded.
“Agent Vance,” Ethan said, his voice ringing clear and strong through the stone corridor. “Meet the new historians of Milfield.”
