Chapter 5 - The Dawn of a New Life

The sun began to rise over the Boston skyline, casting a golden light over the ruins of Briarwell Academy. The dining hall was empty of guests. The opulent decorations had been torn down, the crystal shattered, the white linens trampled. It was a shell of its former glory, just as the reputations of the families who had hosted the gala were now shells.
Maren sat in the back of Damien’s armored Cadillac, her head resting against his chest. She was exhausted, battered, and trembling, but she was safe. The medic had confirmed the baby was fine—the heart was strong, a resilient rhythm that echoed her own.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"Home," Damien said.
He didn't mean Chicago. He meant a place he had built while he was searching for her—a fortress of solitude where the violence of his life could never touch her again. He had spent seven months learning to be a man who was worthy of her, a man who could protect the life she carried.
He looked out the window as the school faded into the distance. He had destroyed their world, but he knew that wasn't enough. He had to build a world where she didn't have to hide, where she didn't have to clean bathrooms, where she didn't have to feel the sting of someone else's cruelty.
Maren touched the thin gold chain around her neck. She looked at Damien—the monster who was her savior, the man of violence who was her peace.
"You did all of this for me?"
"I would burn the world to the ground for you," he said, his voice sincere and absolute.

As the car accelerated, moving away from the city that had treated her as an invisible servant, Maren felt the baby kick—a strong, defiant movement. She closed her eyes and, for the first time in seven months, she slept. She wasn't a janitor. She wasn't a ghost. She was a mother, and she was going home to a man who had finally learned that the only power that mattered was the power to keep her safe.
The story of the academy was over. The story of their life had just begun.
