Chapter 6 - The Morning Light

The following morning broke bright and cold, casting rays of golden sunlight across the snow-draped gardens of the estate.
Elena woke up slowly inside a massive king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets. The room was warm, filled with the soft scent of fresh lavender and baking bread.
For a moment, she disoriented, reaching out frantically toward the side of the bed.
"Mommy!"
Milo popped up from a plush armchair near the window, holding a freshly baked cinnamon pastry in his chocolate-smeared hands. He was dressed in soft, brand-new navy blue pajamas that had been left on the dresser by the house staff.
"Milo," Elena gasped, letting out a long breath as she sat up, supporting her heavy belly with her arm. "Are you okay, sweetie?"
"I'm super okay!" Milo giggled, hopping over to the bed. "The nice lady downstairs made us pancakes! And she said there's a big pool in the basement!"
A quiet knock sounded at the open bedroom door.
Luca stood in the doorway, wearing a dark navy wool sweater and dark trousers, looking considerably less intimidating than he had in his formal evening suit, though his powerful frame still filled the entrance effortlessly.
"Good morning," Luca said softly, stepping into the room. He carried a small silver tray holding a cup of herbal chamomile tea and a plate of fresh fruit.
Elena pulled the silk duvet higher around her chest, her cheeks flushing slightly. "Good morning, Don Moretti."
"Call me Luca," he said, setting the tray gently on the bedside table. He looked down at Milo, a tiny, amused glint touching his dark eyes. "I see you found the pastry kitchen, kid."
"Mrs. Gable said I could have two!" Milo said proudly.
"She's the boss of the kitchen," Luca agreed, sitting down on the edge of the plush leather bench at the foot of the bed. He looked at Elena, his gaze softening as he inspected her color. "How are you feeling today?"
"Better," Elena admitted softly, reaching for the warm tea. "The baby has been moving a lot this morning. I think she liked the pancakes."
"She?" Luca picked up on the pronoun instantly, his dark brows arching slightly. "It's a girl?"
Elena smiled softly, her fingers caressing her swollen abdomen. "Yes. I found out two weeks ago at the clinic. I was going to name her Clara... after my grandmother."
Luca looked at the gentle curve of her stomach, feeling a strange, unfamiliar tightness in his chest. In his world, life was cheap, fragile, and easily taken away. Yet here, inside this quiet room, a fragile new life was thriving against all odds, protected by a mother who had faced down death without blinking.
"It's a beautiful name," Luca said quietly.
He reached into his sweater pocket and pulled out a clean, sealed leather envelope, setting it beside her tea tray.
Elena looked at it suspiciously. "What is that?"
"Legal documents," Luca explained calmly. "I had my attorneys file full protective custody papers for Milo and your unborn daughter this morning. As far as the state of Illinois and the city courts are concerned, you are now under my legal guardianship. No one—not your ex-partner, not the city, and certainly not the Rossi family—can touch your children."
Elena’s hand froze over the envelope. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision.
"Why are you doing all of this for us?" she whispered, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "We are strangers to you. You don't owe us anything."
May you like
Luca leaned forward, placing his hand over hers on the bed, his broad palm covering her cold fingers with solid, unshakeable warmth.
"You saved my life, Elena," Luca said, his obsidian eyes burning into hers with absolute sincerity. "In my world, a debt of life is never forgotten. You and your children are under my roof now. That makes you family."
