PART 3: THE MAN WHO STOPPED THE EVICTION

The pounding on the apartment door grew louder.
“Jenny Reeves!”
The sound echoed through the old building.
Ethan immediately grabbed his mother’s hand.
His small fingers wrapped around hers.
“Mom…”
Jenny looked down at him.
And even though fear was rising inside her, she forced herself to stay calm.
“It’s okay, sweetheart.”
But Ethan wasn’t fooled.
Children always knew.
They knew when adults were scared.
They knew when a smile was fake.
And they knew when someone was trying to protect them from something terrible.
Jenny looked at Marco.
She didn’t know why he was still standing there.
She didn’t know why a man like him would care.
But right now…
She was out of options.
Another bang.
Harder this time.
The door shook.
“Open the door!”
Derek’s voice became more aggressive.
Marco slowly turned his head toward the door.
His expression was no longer the same.
The quiet man who brought medicine was gone.
The man standing there now was someone else.
Someone dangerous.
Jenny noticed.
“Who are you really?”
Marco didn’t look at her.
“Someone who doesn’t like people using fear against those who can’t fight back.”
Before Jenny could respond, Marco walked toward the door.
She immediately stepped in front of him.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“No?”
“This is my problem.”
His eyes softened slightly.
“No.”
Jenny frowned.
“You don’t even know me.”
Marco looked at Ethan.
Then back at her.
“I know enough.”
The words made her pause.
Then Derek started shouting again.
“I know you’re in there!”
“Open up!”
Marco unlocked the door.
Jenny grabbed his arm.
“Wait.”
For a second, Marco looked down at her hand.
It was small.
Tired.
A hand that had probably done everything.
Worked.
Cooked.
Held her son through nightmares.
And now it was trying to stop him.
“I’ll handle it.”
Then he opened the door.
Derek stood outside.
But he wasn’t alone.
Two men stood behind him.
They looked like they were there to intimidate.
Jenny’s face went pale.
“You brought people?”
Derek smiled.
“You don’t listen.”
His eyes moved to Marco.
“And who is this?”
Marco stepped forward.
“Leave.”
Derek laughed.
“Excuse me?”
Marco repeated.
“Leave.”
Derek looked him up and down.
He didn’t recognize him.
That was his mistake.
Because most people who met Marco Vitelli never forgot.
“You think you can tell me what to do in my building?”
Marco’s expression didn’t change.
“Your building?”
Derek smiled.
“Yes.”
He pointed at Jenny.
“She owes money.”
Marco looked at Jenny.
Then back at him.
“How much?”
Derek hesitated.
“Three months.”
“How much?”
The confidence in Derek’s face weakened.
“Two thousand.”
Marco nodded.
“Two thousand dollars.”
He reached into his coat.
Jenny immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Marco ignored her.
He looked at Derek.
“Give me your account number.”
Derek blinked.
“You’re paying?”
“Yes.”
Jenny stepped forward.
“I said no.”
Marco looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to owe you.”
That answer surprised him.
Most people would have been relieved.
But Jenny looked genuinely afraid.
Not of him.
Of needing him.
Marco understood that.
Because he knew what it meant.
A favor was never just a favor.
Especially from someone like him.
“I’m not buying your life, Jenny.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“Then what are you doing?”
Marco looked toward Ethan.
“I’m making sure a child doesn’t lose his home because an adult decided to be cruel.”
The apartment became silent.
Even Derek looked uncomfortable.
But only for a moment.
Then he laughed.
“You don’t know who you’re dealing with.”
Marco looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“But I know exactly who you are.”
Derek’s smile faded.
Marco continued.
“Derek Hale.”
“Five complaints.”
“Two illegal eviction reports.”
“Three tenants who left because you threatened them.”
Derek’s face changed.
“How do you know that?”
Marco stepped closer.
“Because unlike you, I actually pay attention to the people living in my properties.”
Derek looked confused.
“Your properties?”
Marco didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
One of Derek’s men looked at Marco carefully.
Then his face changed.
“Wait…”
He whispered.
“Vitelli.”
The room went silent.
Derek turned.
“What?”
The man swallowed.
“Marco Vitelli.”
The fear appeared instantly.
Not because of what Marco did.
But because of what people said he could do.
Derek took a step back.
“No…”
Marco looked at him.
“Now you know.”
Jenny stared.
“You own this building?”
Marco nodded.
“And several others.”
Her expression changed.
“You’re my landlord?”
“Yes.”
She looked hurt.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
Marco had no answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
He had been watching.
Not because he wanted control.
Because he didn’t understand why he cared.
Derek suddenly found his courage again.
“You can’t just threaten me.”
Marco looked at him.
“I didn’t.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“I called my legal team.”
Derek froze.
Marco continued.
“By tomorrow morning, every tenant who was forced out by you will receive legal assistance.”
Derek’s face turned white.
“You can’t do that.”
Marco’s voice became colder.
“Watch me.”
For the first time…
Derek understood.
This wasn’t a negotiation.
This was the end.
The two men behind him stepped away.
They wanted nothing to do with it.
Derek lowered his voice.
“You’re doing all this for her?”
Marco looked at Jenny.
Then at Ethan.
“Yes.”
Derek laughed bitterly.
“Why?”
Marco didn’t answer immediately.
Because he didn’t know.
Not completely.
He had spent years protecting his empire.
His reputation.
His power.
But this woman had sold the last thing she owned for her son.
And somehow…
That mattered more than everything else.
“Because someone should have helped her sooner.”
Derek left.
The door closed.
Silence filled the apartment.
Jenny stood there.
Still processing everything.
Finally she looked at Marco.
“You’re dangerous.”
Marco almost smiled.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“I heard stories.”
“I’m sure you did.”
“But you helped us.”
Marco looked away.
“Don’t make me sound better than I am.”
Jenny studied him.
“Why not?”
He didn’t answer.
Because he had spent years convincing everyone he was cold.
Untouchable.
A man without weakness.
But then a woman sold her phone.
And reminded him that he was still human.
Ethan walked over.
“Mr. Vitelli?”
Marco looked down.
“Yes?”
The boy held up a drawing.
“I made this.”
Marco looked at it.
A child’s drawing.
Three people.
A small house.
And a big person standing outside.
“Who is this?”
Ethan smiled.
“That’s you.”
Marco frowned.
“Me?”
“Because you protected us.”
Marco looked at the picture.
For a moment, he didn’t know what to say.
Nobody had ever drawn him as someone good.
Nobody.
Jenny watched him.
And she saw something change.
A crack in the armor.
A man who looked powerful.
But who was carrying wounds nobody knew about.
Then Marco’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Speak.”
The voice on the other end sounded urgent.
“Mr. Vitelli, we found something.”
Marco’s expression changed.
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“The eviction was not random.”
Marco looked at Jenny.
“What do you mean?”
The voice replied:
“Someone paid Derek Hale to remove Jenny Reeves from the building.”
Marco’s eyes darkened.
“Who?”
Another pause.
Then the answer came.
A name.
A name that changed everything.
“Your enemy.”
Marco slowly tightened his grip on the phone.
Because suddenly…
This was no longer about rent.
No longer about medicine.
May you like
Someone had targeted Jenny.
And Marco Vitelli was about to find out why.
