PART 4: THE REASON THEY CAME FOR JENNY

The name on the phone stayed in Marco’s mind.

His enemy.

Two words.

But enough to change the atmosphere in the room.

Jenny noticed immediately.

The warmth that had appeared for a moment disappeared from his face.

The man who had smiled at Ethan’s drawing was gone.

The businessman returned.

The man who had survived by trusting nobody.

“Who was it?”

Jenny asked.

Marco looked at her.

For a moment, he considered lying.

He had spent his entire life protecting people by keeping them away from the truth.

But he looked at Ethan.

The boy was sitting on the couch, holding his blanket, watching them.

And Marco realized something.

Jenny deserved the truth.

Especially if she was already involved.

“I don’t know yet.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re lying.”

Marco was surprised.

Most people couldn’t tell.

But Jenny could.

“You’re good at reading people.”

“I’m a mother.”

She looked toward Ethan.

“Mothers learn.”

Those words hit him harder than she knew.

Because his own mother had been the same.

A woman who noticed everything.

A woman who could see pain before he ever spoke.

Marco looked away.

“Someone paid Derek Hale to force you out.”

Jenny froze.

“Why?”

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”

She stepped closer.

“Who would want to do that?”

Marco didn’t answer.

And that silence scared her.

Because there were only two reasons someone like Marco Vitelli would hesitate.

Either the answer was terrible.

Or it was personal.

“Marco.”

It was the first time she had used his name.

He looked at her.

“Tell me.”

He sighed.

“The person who paid Derek…”

A pause.

“Was looking for something.”

Jenny frowned.

“Something?”

Marco nodded.

“They believed you had it.”

Her face changed.

“I don’t understand.”

“Neither do I.”

That was the truth.

And Marco hated it.

Because he was used to knowing everything.

He had built his entire life around information.

Around control.

But Jenny Reeves was a mystery.

A woman with no money.

No protection.

No power.

Yet someone powerful enough to reach him was trying to remove her.

“Pack a bag.”

Jenny blinked.

“What?”

“You and Ethan are leaving tonight.”

Her expression hardened.

“No.”

Marco looked at her.

“No?”

“I’m not running.”

“It’s not running.”

“It feels like it.”

Marco stepped closer.

“You don’t know who you’re dealing with.”

Jenny laughed quietly.

A tired laugh.

“Neither do you.”

That stopped him.

“What?”

She looked at him.

“You think because you’re powerful, you can solve everything.”

Her voice softened.

“But you don’t know my life.”

Marco stayed silent.

“I spent years running from people who wanted something from me.”

She looked at Ethan.

“I protected him alone.”

Then back at Marco.

“I’m not going to become helpless now.”

For a moment, he saw it.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

Strength.

The same strength he had seen when she sold her phone.

A woman losing everything…

And still choosing her child.

Marco nodded slowly.

“Fine.”

Jenny looked surprised.

“Fine?”

“You’re right.”

She didn’t expect that.

“I can’t force you.”

A small silence.

“But you’re not staying here alone.”

Before she could respond, the lights suddenly went out.

The apartment became dark.

Ethan gasped.

“Mom?”

Jenny immediately moved toward him.

“I’m here.”

Marco pulled out his phone.

The screen lit up his face.

His instincts changed.

Every muscle became alert.

“Stay behind me.”

Jenny grabbed Ethan.

“What happened?”

Marco looked toward the window.

“Someone cut the power.”

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Jenny froze.

“Marco…”

He didn’t answer.

He was listening.

Another step.

Closer.

The old apartment suddenly felt much smaller.

Marco moved silently toward the door.

Jenny whispered:

“Don’t.”

He looked back.

“I need to know who it is.”

Then he reached for the handle.

The door opened.

Nobody was there.

Only a small envelope on the floor.

Marco picked it up.

Jenny watched.

“What is it?”

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Marco’s expression changed.

Jenny saw it.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

“Marco.”

Slowly, he turned the picture around.

Jenny looked.

And her entire body went cold.

It was her.

Years ago.

Before Ethan was born.

Before she disappeared.

But that wasn’t what shocked her.

It was the person standing beside her.

A man.

Someone she knew.

Someone she thought was gone.

“No…”

Her voice broke.

Marco looked at her.

“You know him?”

Jenny couldn’t speak.

Because the past she buried had just returned.

Finally she whispered:

“Ethan’s father.”

Silence.

Marco looked at the picture again.

“You told me he was dead.”

Jenny’s eyes filled with tears.

“He was.”

“Then who took this photo?”

She didn’t know.

And that terrified her.

Because there was only one person who knew the whole story.

The man who had disappeared five years ago.

The man who left her alone.

The man she never wanted her son to know about.

Suddenly Marco’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Who is this?”

A voice came through.

A voice from the past.

“Marco Vitelli.”

Marco’s expression changed.

“You know who I am.”

The voice laughed.

“Everyone knows who you are.”

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then:

“I’m closer than you think.”

Marco’s eyes moved around the apartment.

Protecting.

Calculating.

“Why Jenny?”

The voice became colder.

“Because she has something that belongs to me.”

Marco looked at Jenny.

“What?”

The answer came.

“The truth.”

Then the call ended.

The room stayed silent.

Jenny wiped her tears.

“I need to tell you everything.”

Marco nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked at Ethan.

The boy was still holding her hand.

Still trusting her.

Still innocent.

“I wasn’t just hiding from the Blackwoods.”

Marco frowned.

“Who are they?”

Jenny looked at him.

“The people who destroyed my life.”

A pause.

“And now they know about Ethan.”

Marco felt anger rise.

Not the controlled anger he used in business.

Something deeper.

Something dangerous.

Because he understood one thing.

Jenny had spent years protecting her son.

And now someone was trying to take him away.

“No one touches him.”

Jenny looked at him.

“You can’t promise that.”

Marco stepped closer.

His voice was quiet.

But absolute.

“Yes.”

“I can.”

Because for the first time in years…

Marco Vitelli wasn’t fighting for money.

Or power.

Or revenge.

He was fighting for someone else.

A mother.

A child.

A family he never expected to have.

The next morning, the city woke up to news.

Derek Hale had disappeared.

His accounts were frozen.

His illegal eviction records were exposed.

And every person he had hurt was finally getting justice.

But nobody knew why.

Nobody knew the real reason.

Except Marco.

Because he had made a promise.

And Marco Vitelli always kept his promises.

But Jenny still didn’t know the biggest secret.

The reason everyone was searching for her.

The reason Ethan mattered.

The reason the photograph existed.

Because her son was not just a child caught in someone else’s war.

He was the key to a secret powerful people had killed to hide.

May you like

And now…

The truth was coming for all of them.
