Chapter 2 - The Red Line crossed

"Police! Nobody move! Drop the weapon!"
The commanding roar echoed through the vaulted ceilings of the Fremont mansion. Before Mark could even register the sound, three heavily armed tactical officers burst through the shattered entryway, their assault rifles raised and red laser sights dancing across his chest.
"Drop the bat! Now!" an officer screamed.
Mark’s face drained of color. The baseball bat slipped from his hands, clattering loudly against the marble floor. He raised his hands in the air, his chest heaving, his bravado instantly evaporating into pure panic. "Wait! Officers, you don't understand! This is a family matter! My daughter, she... she fell, she's hysterical—"
"Shut up and get on the ground! Face down! Hands behind your back!"
Two officers moved in with practiced synchronization, kicking Mark’s legs out from under him and forcing him onto the cold floor. A loud, metallic click echoed through the room as the zip-ties were pulled tight around his wrists.
Yasmin gasped, dropping the signed transfer papers. They fluttered to the ground, landing in a pool of my grandmother's will. She tried to step backward toward the kitchen, her hands trembling. "I have nothing to do with this! I was just trying to help her! Gillian, tell them!"
But Gillian was frozen in place, her phone still raised, her face white as chalk. An officer stepped up to her, forcefully grabbing the device from her hand. "This is evidence. Step back, ma'am, or you will be detained for interfering with an active arrest."
From behind the tactical team, a tall, elegant woman stepped into the foyer. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a flawless bun. It was Ana Brennan. Beside her was Detective Sarah Vance of the Fremont Police Department, a woman known for her relentless pursuit of justice.
"Alana!" Ana rushed over to me, kneeling on the hard marble. Her eyes softened with deep concern as she looked at my swelling, bruised right arm. "Oh, my dear girl... I'm so sorry we couldn't get here seconds sooner."
"I got it, Ana," I whispered, my voice hoarse from pain. "The camera... did it record everything?"
Detective Vance walked over, holding up a secure digital receiver that was linked to my brooch. "Every single word, Miss Darcy. We have your father on camera admitting to assault, extortion, threatening to falsely commit you to a psychiatric ward, and conspiring with his wife and stepdaughter to steal your inheritance. We also have Miss Gillian's phone, which was actively recording the assault."
"This is a setup!" Mark screamed from the floor, his cheek pressed hard against the marble. "She planned this! She's trying to ruin me! Alana, you ungrateful little bitch, I am your father!"
"A father doesn't break his daughter's arm for money, Mark," Detective Vance said coldly. She turned to the officers. "Arrest all three of them. Mark Darcy for felony assault with a deadly weapon, extortion, and domestic violence. Yasmin and Gillian Darcy as accomplices to extortion and conspiracy."
"What?!" Gillian shrieked as an officer grabbed her arms, pulling them behind her back. "You can't arrest me! I was just recording! I didn't touch her! Mom, do something!"
Yasmin was weeping hysterically now, her polished facade completely shattered as the metal handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists. "Please! We can settle this! Alana, tell them to stop! We're family!"
I looked at them, my heart hardening into a block of solid ice. The physical pain in my arm was excruciating, but a profound, burning sense of vindication began to wash over me.
"You are not my family," I said, looking down at them as the paramedics finally rushed through the door with a stretcher. "My family died with my mother and grandmother. You are just parasites. And your time in my house is officially over."
As the paramedics carefully lifted me onto the stretcher, stabilizing my broken arm, I watched the police drag Mark, Yasmin, and Gillian out of the house in handcuffs, their frantic screams fading into the night.

This was only the first battle. I knew the Darcy name carried immense weight in the state of California, and Mark still had powerful, corrupt allies. But as the ambulance doors closed and the siren began to wail, I gripped the burgundy folder tightly with my left hand.
The war had officially begun.
