Chapter 5 - The Final Trap

I stood my ground, my heart hammering against my ribs, but I forced my face to remain an emotionless mask. "You really think I came here unprepared, Yasmin? After what you did to my grandmother? After what you did to my mother?"

Yasmin’s smile faltered slightly. She gestured to the two guards, who took a step forward, their hands moving inside their jackets. "Don't play games with me, you little brat. You're cornered. There are no cameras here, no police, and no escape. Give me the box."

"Actually," I said, slowly pulling my left hand out of my pocket, holding a small, black remote control with a single glowing red LED light. "I learned a lot from my grandmother. For instance, she taught me that a predator always follows the easiest bait."

Before Yasmin could react, the overhead lights in the vault room flickered and died, plunging us into darkness.

In the same second, the high-pitched, deafening wail of the bank's main security alarm began to echo through the concrete walls. The heavy steel vault door began to automatically slide shut—a standard lockdown protocol for bank robberies that I had secretly triggered using the bank’s emergency silent-alarm remote, which the manager had slipped to me under the table when we first entered.

"What are you doing?!" Yasmin shrieked in the dark. "Stop her! Get the box!"

The two guards lunged forward, but in the pitch black, they collided with each other and the heavy wooden table.

Ana and I, who had memorized the layout of the room, slipped past them. I grabbed the leather journals and the USB drive, stuffing them into my sling. We squeezed through the narrowing gap of the closing vault door just before it slammed shut with a heavy, pneumatic hiss, locking Yasmin and her henchmen inside the impenetrable steel chamber.

"Alana!" Yasmin’s muffled screams echoed through the thick steel. "Let us out! You can't do this!"

"Enjoy the wait, Yasmin," I whispered to the cold steel. "The police are already on their way."

Ten minutes later, the bank plaza was swarming with flashing red and blue lights. But this time, it wasn't just the local police. Three black SUVs with federal plates pulled up, and several agents in windbreakers emblazoned with FBI stepped out.

Detective Vance was with them. She walked up to me, a proud smile on her face. "You did it, Alana. We intercepted Yasmin's communications yesterday and knew she was tracking your vehicle. We let her follow you here to catch her violating her bond and attempting to destroy federal evidence."

I handed the black USB drive and the three leather journals to the lead FBI agent. "Everything is in here. The shell companies, the offshore accounts, the cartel connections, and the evidence that my grandmother was slowly poisoned with heavy metals."

The agent took the files, his face grave. "If this is what I think it is, Miss Darcy, your father, stepmother, and their entire network are going away for a very, very long time. This is a slam dunk."

As we watched the federal agents escort a handcuffed, disheveled Yasmin out of the bank vault, her expensive designer clothes rumpled and her face twisted in defeat, Ana placed a comforting hand on my uninjured shoulder.

"It's over, Alana. You've won. Your grandmother's legacy is safe."

I looked up at the beautiful Sonoma sky, feeling the warm California sun on my face for the first time in months. The physical pain in my arm was still there, but the crushing weight of fear was gone, replaced by an overwhelming sense of peace.

My father, Yasmin, and Gillian had tried to break me. They thought that by shattering my bones, they could shatter my spirit and steal what wasn't theirs. But they had underestimated the strength of the women who came before me.

I smiled, remembering my grandmother's words.

We let them believe they had won, just long enough to ensure they would lose everything.
