Chapter 7 - The Mulberry Trust

While Damian restructured his criminal empire into a legitimate corporate powerhouse, a different kind of transformation was taking place at the Long Island estate.

The heavy iron security gates that had once kept the world out were now frequently open to admit architects, interior designers, and landscape contractors.

The west wing of the house—where Clara had spent her first traumatic weeks—had been completely renovated. It was no longer a sterile medical suite; it had been converted into a sunlit two-story library and art studio, filled with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, grand easels, and warm Persian rugs.

Clara stood near the tall French doors overlooking the ocean, holding a hot cup of tea. She was wearing a cream-colored cashmere sweater, her dark hair long and healthy, the hollows in her cheeks completely filled out by proper rest and nutrition. She looked radiant—a woman who had finally been allowed to put down a burden she had carried for far too long.

"You're staring again," Damian's deep voice sounded behind her.

Clara turned, a soft, beautiful smile touching her lips. "I’m just trying to make sure I don't wake up back on Mott Street."

Damian walked up beside her, holding a legal folder bound in blue leather. "Mott Street is gone, Clara. In fact, I bought the entire building three days ago. My construction company is knocking it down next month to build a community medical center named after my mother."

Clara looked at him, her eyes filled with a deep, quiet wonder. "You've changed everything, haven't you? Your business, your life... all of it."

"Not all of it," Damian said gently, handing her the blue folder. "Open it."

Clara set her tea cup on the table and opened the file. Inside were several legal deeds, trust agreements, and bank account confirmations stamped by the Supreme Court of New York.

"The Mulberry Trust," Clara read aloud, her brows pulling together in confusion. "What is this?"

"It’s a perpetual educational and living trust," Damian explained, his voice dropping into a tender register he reserved only for her. "It places forty percent of my non-voting corporate stock into an irrevocable foundation managed entirely by you. It provides complete financial independence for you and Lily for the rest of your lives. No matter what happens to me, no matter what happens to my company... no one can ever touch it."

Clara stared down at the documents, her hands beginning to shake. "Damian... I can't accept this. This is millions of dollars... I was just your maid—"

Damian reached out, taking the blue folder from her hands and setting it aside, gently wrapping his large palms around her trembling fingers.

"You were never just my maid, Clara," Damian murmured, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath hitch in her throat. "You were the miracle that saved my soul. Before you and Lily walked into my hall, I was a dead man wearing an expensive suit. You gave me back my humanity."

Clara looked up into his dark, handsome face—seeing no longer the feared mafia boss of New York, but a man who had bled for her, a man who had carried her daughter through the dark, a man who had built a sanctuary for them out of the ruins of his own pain.

"I love you, Damian," Clara whispered, her voice breaking with emotion.

Damian brought her hands to his lips, kissing her knuckles softly. "I have loved you since the moment I saw you sitting on that mattress in Chinatown, willing to die just to protect your child."

He pulled her into his arms, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of ocean wind, fresh beginnings, and a love that had been forged in the fires of hell itself.
