Chapter 8 - The First Day of School

Six months later, on a crisp, bright September morning, the front driveway of the Long Island estate was filled with the sound of cheerful chatter.
A brand-new black Range Rover—devoid of armor plating or bulletproof glass—was parked near the front steps, its rear hatch open to receive a brightly colored unicorn backpack and a matching lunchbox.
Lily was standing on the bottom step, wearing a dark blue school uniform jumper, white knee socks, and polished black patent-leather shoes. Her two braids were tied with neat red ribbons.
In her right hand, she proudly carried her old, dented blue plastic bucket—which she had insisted on bringing as her "show and tell" item for her first day at the prestigious St. Andrew’s Academy in Manhattan.
"Lily, sweetheart," Clara laughed, stepping out of the house in a tailored navy dress. "Are you sure you want to take the bucket to school? None of the other children will have a bucket."
"I want the bucket, Mama!" Lily insisted, hugging the dented blue plastic to her chest. "It’s my lucky bucket! It helped Mr. Darius find us!"
Damian stepped out of the front doors, wearing a simple navy blazer and open-collared white shirt—a dramatic change from the dark, severe charcoal suits he had worn for twenty years. He looked younger, relaxed, his sharp jaw softened by a genuine smile as he walked down the steps.
"If Lily wants to bring her bucket, she brings her bucket," Damian declared, sweeping the three-year-old girl up into his arms and tossing her high into the air, making her squeal with pure delight.
"You spoil her too much," Clara said, coming up beside him and resting her head against his shoulder.
"I'm making up for lost time," Damian murmured, kissing Clara’s forehead.
Nico Ricci pulled up to the house in his own car, stepping out onto the driveway. He looked at Damian, then at the bright blue bucket, and let out a warm, hearty laugh. "Boss, if the Commission could see you right now—carrying a unicorn backpack and a plastic bucket—they'd have a collective stroke."
"Let them," Damian smiled, opening the rear door of the Range Rover and carefully buckling Lily into her child safety seat. "Nico, did you double-check the school perimeter?"
"I did," Nico reported softly, stepping closer so Clara wouldn't hear. "Two discreet security guards are posted outside the school gates. The local precinct captain—who owes us his position—is personally monitoring the block. She’s completely safe, Damian."
Damian nodded, satisfied. He climbed into the driver's seat—insisting on driving the family himself rather than using a chauffeur—while Clara sat in the front passenger seat.
As the heavy iron gates of the estate opened to let them out onto the coastal highway, Lily leaned forward in her car seat, poking her head between the front chairs.
"Mr. Darius?" she called out.
Damian glanced into the rearview mirror, his dark eyes warm. "Yes, little one?"
"Are you going to be my daddy forever now?"
The car went completely silent for a moment, save for the hum of the tires on the smooth asphalt.
Clara turned her head, her dark eyes shining with tears as she watched Damian's reaction.
Damian stopped the vehicle at a red light, turned around in his seat, and reached out to gently take Lily's tiny hand in his massive palm.

"I am going to be your daddy for the rest of my life, Lily," Damian said, his voice thick with deep, unfiltered emotion. "And nothing in this world will ever change that."
Lily grinned, her two small front teeth showing, completely satisfied with his answer. "Good. Because my bucket said you were the best daddy in the whole world."
