PART 3 — The Collapse of Julian Mercer

PART 3 — The Collapse of Julian Mercer

For the first time since I had known him…

Julian Mercer had nothing to say.

No clever insult.

No confident smile.

No speech about how I was lucky to be there.

He simply stood in the doorway of the mansion, staring at me as if he had never seen me before.

And maybe he hadn’t.

Because the woman he thought he knew was gone.

The truth had finally stepped outside.

Eleanor was the first to recover.

She always was.

People like her survived by controlling the room.

By controlling the story.

She lifted her chin and forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous.”

I looked at her.

“Is it?”

“Yes.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You expect us to believe you are some billionaire CEO because you made a phone call?”

I said nothing.

That bothered her.

People who are lying usually need noise.

They need arguments.

They need someone to fight.

I didn’t need any of that anymore.

Because facts didn’t need defending.

My phone rang again.

This time, I put it on speaker.

“Ms. Vance?”

Christian’s voice filled the cold air.

Julian looked nervous.

“Yes.”

“Give me the update.”

Christian continued.

“The Mercer family accounts connected to Vance Global Holdings have been frozen.”

Eleanor’s face changed.

“Frozen?”

Christian kept speaking.

“Company vehicles have been recalled.”

“Corporate residences have been secured.”

“Private staff contracts are under review.”

A pause.

“And we have discovered several unauthorized transfers made by Mr. Julian Mercer.”

The silence after that was brutal.

Julian looked at me.

“That’s not possible.”

I watched his confidence disappear piece by piece.

“What transfers?”

Christian answered.

“Approximately four hundred thousand dollars over the last eight months.”

Eleanor turned toward her son.

“Julian?”

He looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

The anger I felt was not because of the money.

Money was easy.

Money could be replaced.

Trust couldn’t.

I looked at him.

“You stole from me.”

His jaw tightened.

“No.”

A pause.

“It wasn’t like that.”

I almost laughed.

“Then what was it?”

He stepped closer.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.”

That sentence.

That was the moment.

The moment I knew he truly didn’t understand.

“You took money from a company you didn’t own.”

I looked at him.

“You hid purchases from me.”

“You lied.”

“You humiliated me.”

A pause.

“And then you threw me and your newborn sons into the snow.”

His expression shifted.

The babies.

For the first time, he looked at them.

Really looked.

Their tiny faces.

Their small hands.

His sons.

Something flickered.

Regret.

But it came too late.

“Audrey…”

I hated how soft my name sounded in his mouth.

Like he could still reach me.

Like the last hour had not happened.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Please.”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“You don’t get to call me that like everything is normal.”

Eleanor stepped between us.

“This is all because you hid your identity.”

I looked at her.

She actually believed that.

“You think that excuses what you did?”

She crossed her arms.

“If you had told us who you were—”

“I wanted a normal life.”

My voice cut through hers.

A pause.

“I wanted someone to love me without knowing my bank account.”

Julian looked down.

And that hurt more than anger.

Because he knew.

Deep down, he knew.

I continued.

“I didn’t hide because I was ashamed.”

“I hid because I wanted to know if you loved Audrey.”

A pause.

“Not Audrey Vance.”

The wind blew harder.

“I got my answer.”

Nobody spoke.

Then the front gate opened.

Several black SUVs entered the driveway.

Julian looked alarmed.

“Who are they?”

I didn’t answer.

The vehicles stopped.

Men and women in dark suits stepped out.

Not guards.

Not strangers.

My executive security team.

Led by Marcus.

He had worked with me for twelve years.

The one person who knew every secret I had.

He walked through the snow.

Stopped in front of me.

And lowered his head.

“Ms. Vance.”

Julian’s face went completely pale.

Because hearing someone call me that made everything real.

“Marcus.”

“Are the babies’ arrangements ready?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Medical team is waiting at the private residence.”

Julian looked confused.

“Private residence?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because my sons need warmth.”

The words hit him.

Not because they were cruel.

Because they were true.

He had forgotten that before being his wife…

I was their mother.

Marcus turned toward Julian.

“Sir.”

Julian stared.

“Sir?”

Marcus’s expression didn’t change.

“You are no longer authorized to access company-owned properties.”

The sentence was polite.

But devastating.

Julian looked at me.

“You’re kicking me out?”

I tilted my head.

The same question he had asked me minutes earlier.

But now the power had shifted.

“I’m not kicking you out.”

A pause.

“I’m correcting ownership.”

Eleanor suddenly became furious.

“You cannot do this.”

I looked at her.

“I can.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“My son is your husband.”

I nodded.

“Was.”

The word landed.

Julian flinched.

Eleanor looked at me.

“You think money makes you powerful?”

I stepped closer.

“No.”

A pause.

“Choices do.”

She went quiet.

Because she knew.

The money was never the reason.

The money only revealed what people were willing to do.

Marcus handed me a folder.

“Legal documents.”

I opened it.

Inside was the divorce filing.

Prepared.

Waiting.

I looked at Julian.

“You wanted me to sign papers tomorrow.”

His face changed.

I held up the folder.

“So I made it easier.”

He stared.

“You planned this?”

“No.”

A pause.

“I planned for honesty.”

I closed the folder.

“You planned for cruelty.”

The twins started crying louder.

The sound broke through everything.

Julian looked at them.

His eyes filled.

“They’re my children.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“They are.”

His expression softened.

“Can I hold them?”

For a second…

A tiny part of me wanted to say yes.

Because he was their father.

Because they deserved love from both parents.

But then I remembered the door closing.

The lock.

The snow.

His words.

You should be grateful I tolerated you.

I shook my head.

“Not tonight.”

His face fell.

“Why?”

I answered quietly:

“Because tonight they need someone who protects them.”

A tear moved down his cheek.

The first emotion I had seen from him all night.

But I didn’t know if it was regret.

Or fear.

My security team helped me into the waiting vehicle.

As I stepped away, Julian called my name.

“Audrey.”

I stopped.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I was curious.

“What?”

He looked at me.

And whispered:

“Was anything between us real?”

The question stayed in the air.

For a moment…

I remembered everything.

Our first meeting.

Our wedding.

The birth of our sons.

The dreams we had.

Then I looked back at the mansion.

The place where he abandoned me.

“I don’t know anymore.”

I got into the car.

And as the vehicle drove away…

The man who thought he had thrown away a powerless wife…

May you like

Finally realized something terrifying.

He had lost the woman who built his entire world.
