Chapter 7 - The Twelve-Minute Void

By 1:00 AM, the mansion was dark. Vanessa was fast asleep in the primary suite, exhausted from the drama of the evening.
Daniel was not asleep.
He sat in his leather chair in the basement server room, illuminated only by the glowing blue lights of the server racks. A half-empty cup of black coffee sat beside his keyboard.
His fingers flew across his custom mechanical keyboard.
As the founder and CEO of a multi-billion-dollar software firm, Daniel had coded ninety percent of the estate’s security architecture himself. The system was designed to be unhackable from the outside, utilizing end-to-end quantum encryption and local mirror backups.
On his primary monitor, the security interface showed thirty-two camera thumbnails, each recording in real-time.
Daniel pulled up the timeline for Camera 4—the outdoor terrace camera.
He dragged the time slider back to 5:45 PM.
The screen flickered.
A black box appeared over the video window, accompanied by a system error prompt: [DATA SEGMENT MISSING: 17:45:00 - 17:57:00].
Daniel frowned. He typed a quick diagnostic command into the terminal window.
> system.log --check_integrity --cam_04
The terminal output scrolled quickly across the screen:
[17:44:59] - CAMERA 04: RECORDING NORMAL [17:45:01] - MANUAL OVERRIDE ENTERED (USER: ADMIN_SECONDARY) [17:45:02] - DATA DELETION INITIATED [17:57:01] - CAMERA 04: RECORDING RESUMED
Daniel froze.
Manual Override.
User: Admin_Secondary.
Cold ice flushed through his veins.
The ADMIN_SECONDARY access code was a emergency override key he had created six months ago. He had written it down on a single piece of paper and locked it inside his private safe in the study.
The only other person who had seen him enter that safe code was Vanessa.
Daniel leaned closer to the screen, his chest tightening so hard he could barely breathe.
Someone had physically sat at this console, entered his secondary administrative key, and deleted twelve minutes of video footage from the outdoor terrace camera—specifically during the exact window of time when Vanessa claimed Amara had dropped the champagne glass.
“Why delete the video?” Daniel whispered to the empty room.
If Amara had dropped the glass, if she had grabbed it out of Vanessa’s hand as Vanessa claimed, the video footage would have proven Vanessa right. It would have given Vanessa absolute, ironclad proof to demand Amara’s immediate termination.
Deleting the video only made sense if the footage proved something else.
If it proved Vanessa was lying.
Daniel’s hands began to shake slightly—not from fear, but from a dark, cold fury that was rapidly mounting inside him.
He typed another command, diving deep into the system’s shadow logs. While the local video file had been deleted, Daniel’s security system was built with a redundant shadow protocol that cached raw metadata on a secondary, hidden partition whenever a manual override was executed.
> shadow_cache.extract --timestamp [17:45:00-17:57:00]
A progress bar appeared on screen: EXTRACTING CACHED METADATA... 45%... 89%... COMPLETE.
A text file opened on his screen. It contained automated system snapshots taken every three seconds during the missing twelve minutes.
Daniel clicked on the snapshot taken at 17:51:22.
A grainy, still image appeared on screen.
It showed the garden terrace. Amara was standing three feet away, holding her serving tray. Vanessa was holding the champagne glass by the very tip of the stem.
Amara’s hands were completely motionless at her sides.
Vanessa’s fingers were fully open, letting the glass fall through the air toward the limestone floor.
Daniel stared at the image.
He zoomed in.
The timestamp was undeniable. Vanessa had dropped the glass while Amara was nowhere near it.
Daniel leaned back in his chair, staring at the screen as the horrifying reality crashed over him like a tidal wave.
Vanessa had staged the whole thing. She had dropped the glass, blamed Amara, used her tears to manipulate him in front of three hundred guests, and then used his private administrative key to hire someone to delete the proof.
And if she had lied about the glass...
Daniel’s eyes snapped to the secondary door log for his private study upstairs.
He pulled up the access log for his study door from 10:15 PM.
[22:14:02] - STUDY DOOR UNLOCKED (USER: DANIEL_MASTER_KEY) [22:14:05] - STUDY DOOR LOCKED FROM INSIDE [22:18:30] - STUDY DOOR UNLOCKED FROM INSIDE
Vanessa had locked herself in the study with Amara for four minutes before screaming for help.
Daniel closed his eyes. A sick, suffocating feeling washed over him.
He had stood in that study and accused a woman who had worked loyally for him for two years of being a thief. He had watched her strip off her apron, lay down his grandfather’s heirloom, and walk out into the night with her dignity shredded—all based on the hysterical lies of a woman he was planning to marry.
Daniel opened his eyes. The softness, the hesitation, the confusion—all of it vanished from his face.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a number.
It rang twice before a raspy, alert voice answered.
“Boss? It’s 1:30 AM. Is everything okay?”
“Julian,” Daniel said, his voice flat and terrifyingly cold. “I need you and three of your security guys at the house in twenty minutes. Bring the transport van.”
“Understood, Mr. Cole. What’s the situation?”
May you like
Daniel looked at the monitor screen showing Vanessa dropping the glass.
“An eviction,” Daniel said softly. “And a reckoning.”
