Chapter 8 - The Late-Night Visitor

It was 2:15 AM in a modest residential neighborhood twelve miles from Daniel’s estate.

Amara sat on the small worn sofa in her two-bedroom apartment, wrapped in a faded fleece blanket. The apartment was quiet, save for the soft humming of the old refrigerator in the kitchen and the steady breathing of little Nora sleeping peacefully in the adjacent room.

Amara hadn't slept. She couldn't.

Her mind was racing in endless circles. She had three hundred dollars in her checking account. Her rent was due in eleven days. Nora’s preschool tuition was due in two weeks.

She looked at her laptop sitting on the coffee table. The video file was loaded, ready to be sent.

I should just send it, she thought. Why am I protecting him? He stood there and called me a thief.

A sudden, sharp knock at her front door made her jump.

Amara froze. She looked at the clock on her wall. 2:18 AM.

Who would be knocking on her door at two in the morning?

She stood up slowly, her heart pounding in her throat, and walked toward the door. She looked through the tiny peep-hole.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway outside was Daniel Cole.

He looked terrible. His hair was messy, his dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the top, and his eyes were red-rimmed and hollowed out with fatigue. But he was alone.

Amara hesitated, her hand trembling on the deadbolt.

“Amara,” his voice came through the thick wood, quiet and raw. “Please open the door. I know what time it is. I just... please.”

Amara took a deep breath, unlocked the deadbolt, and pulled the door open three inches, keeping the safety chain engaged.

“Mr. Cole,” she said coldly. “You shouldn't be here. If Miss Hale knows you’re at my apartment, she’ll probably call the police again.”

Daniel winced as if she had struck him across the face.

“She won't be calling anyone,” Daniel said softly.

Amara frowned through the crack in the door. “What?”

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a black USB drive, and held it up.

“I checked the shadow server logs, Amara,” Daniel confessed, his voice shaking slightly. “I pulled the cached metadata from camera four. I saw her open her fingers. I saw her drop the glass.”

Amara went completely still.

“You... you saw it?” she whispered.

“I saw all of it,” Daniel said, leaning his forehead against the wooden doorframe, his shoulders slumping under a crushing weight of shame. “I saw that she dropped the glass. I saw that someone used my secondary admin code to wipe twelve minutes of footage. And I realized what she did in the study.”

He looked through the crack in the door, his grey eyes filled with a desperate, painful remorse that Amara had never seen in him before.

“I stood in my study and I called you a thief,” Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. “I let her humiliate you in front of my guests. I let her drive you out of my house after two years of everything you’ve done for me and my family. I am so sorry, Amara. God, I am so sorry.”

Amara stared at him. The knot of anger that had been burning in her chest since eight o'clock tonight began to melt, replaced by a strange, heavy ache.

She slowly unhooked the safety chain and opened the door wide.

Daniel stepped into the small, neatly kept apartment. It was tiny compared to his sprawling mansion—the living room was barely the size of his master bathroom—but it was warm, filled with framed photos of Nora, bright children’s drawings taped to the fridge, and the soft smell of lavender soap.

Daniel stood near the small dining table, looking entirely out of place in his high-end clothes, looking down at his hands.

“Why didn't you tell me about the video, Amara?” Daniel asked softly. “You had your phone out in the server room. You filmed Chloe and the technician deleting the file. Why didn't you show it to me when I walked into the kitchen?”

Amara looked at him, her arms crossed over her chest.

“Because you were standing there with her arm wrapped around yours,” Amara said quietly. “Because you had already taken her side outside on the patio. If I had shown you that video right then, you would have thought I was trying to sabotage your engagement.”

Daniel swallowed hard, unable to meet her eyes. She was completely right.

“I didn't want to ruin your company, Daniel,” Amara added softly, dropping the formal 'Mr. Cole'. “It was the biggest night of your career. I knew if this leaked, your stock would crash.”

Daniel looked up at her, stunned.

“You were fired, humiliated, and framed for grand larceny,” Daniel said, his voice rising in disbelief. “And you were still protecting my stock price?”

“I wasn't protecting your stock,” Amara said firmly. “I was protecting you. Because despite everything that happened tonight, I know who you are, Daniel. You’re the man who kept crayons in his drawer for my daughter. You were just stupid enough to fall for a woman who knew how to play you.”

Daniel let out a long, shuddering breath, covering his face with both hands.

“She’s gone,” Daniel said after a long silence.

Amara blinked. “What?”

“I had Julian and my security team escort Vanessa, Chloe, and her parents off my property twenty minutes ago,” Daniel revealed, looking back up. “I canceled the wedding. I’ve already instructed my legal team to file an injunction against the Hale family for corporate espionage and security breaches.”

Amara gasped softly. “You threw her out tonight?”

“I threw her out twenty minutes after I found the footage,” Daniel said, his eyes burning with absolute clarity. “She tried to destroy an innocent woman to cover up a lie. She doesn't belong in my house. She doesn't belong in my life.”

He took a step toward Amara, pulling a thick white envelope from his inner jacket pocket and setting it on her coffee table.

“What is that?” Amara asked.

“Your back pay,” Daniel said. “Plus a severance package. But... I’m not here to offer you severance, Amara.”

May you like

He looked around the quiet apartment, then back at her.

“I’m here to ask you to come back.”
