Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Arthur Montgomery

At eight o'clock the following morning, the sun broke through the heavy rain clouds, casting a cold, pale light across the skyline of downtown Chicago.

The high-rise headquarters of Montgomery & Associates occupied the top three floors of a sleek glass tower on Michigan Avenue. Inside the mahogany-paneled corner office on the sixty-fifth floor, Arthur Montgomery sat behind a massive leather desk, sipping espresso from a porcelain cup.

At sixty-two, Arthur was a picture of silver-haired, old-money authority. He wore a bespoke three-piece navy suit, gold cuff links gleaming at his wrists, his face defined by sharp, arrogant lines that spoke of four decades of unchallengeable legal power.

Across the desk sat Celeste.

She wore a high-collared cashmere sweater that completely covered her neck, her synthetic champagne-blonde bob styled into an immaculate, razor-sharp edge. She was pacing the floor nervously, a crystal glass of sparkling water shaking in her hand.

"You're panicking over nothing, Celeste," Arthur said smoothly, setting his espresso cup down on its saucer. "Adrian is a businessman. He is pragmatic. He was slightly annoyed by the dramatic scene in the garden because it disrupted his morning schedule. Nothing more."

"He looked at me like he knew, Father!" Celeste hissed, stopping her pacing to slam her glass onto the leather desk. "He didn't just dismiss Elena—he gave her paid administrative leave! He picked up her daughter's hospital bracelet off the floor! He’s looking into her, Father!"

Arthur’s eyes narrowed slightly, but his expression remained entirely cool. "Elena Marquez is a domestic servant with a dying child. She has no leverage, no money, and no voice. Even if she told Adrian about the grant application I blocked, it is her word against mine. Who do you think Adrian will believe? His primary legal counsel of thirty years, or a maid whose daughter is in intensive care?"

"You don't understand," Celeste whispered, her voice cracking with an edge of real, unvarnished fear. "He didn't come to my suite last night. He stayed in the west wing until two in the morning. And Vance—his security chief—was seen taking files out of the sub-basement archive."

Arthur’s hand froze over his desk blotter.

"The sub-basement?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping into a low, serious register for the first time.

"Yes!" Celeste gasped. "What if he checked the vault, Father? What if he knows the locket is empty?!"

Arthur stood up slowly, smoothing the front of his tailored vest. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the misty expanse of Lake Michigan.

"The locket was a necessary casualty, Celeste," Arthur said coldly, his reflection in the glass looking dark and predatory. "The Swiss syndicate offered two million dollars for an authenticated genetic sample from the primary Vale bloodline. They needed it to verify the biometric signatures for the offshore holding accounts your late mother established in Zurich before her death."

He turned back to face his daughter, his eyes cold as steel.

"More importantly," Arthur continued, "as long as that lock of hair existed in Vale Manor, there was always a risk that Adrian would run an advanced genomic sequencing test on it—a test that would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the little girl who drowned twenty-three years ago shared an exact genetic match with the child currently sitting in Wing C of St. Jude's Hospital."

Celeste gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "What... what did you just say?"

Arthur smiled a dark, cruel smile that carried zero warmth.

"Did you really think I hired Elena Marquez three years ago because she was a good housekeeper, Celeste?" Arthur whispered, leaning across the desk. "I tracked that girl down twenty years ago when she was pulled out of the coastal waters by a family of local fishermen in Maine. She had lost her memory. She didn't know her name. She grew up in foster homes, believing she was the daughter of an unknown laborer."

He straightened his cuffs, his smile widening.

"I brought her into Vale Manor under a fake identity, kept her under constant financial pressure, and made sure her daughter's medical bills kept her entirely dependent on my generosity," Arthur said. "Because as long as the real Beatrice Vale was sweeping the floors of Vale Manor as a domestic servant, she would never, ever realize that she was the sole legal heir to eighty percent of the Vale maritime fortune."

Celeste stared at her father in absolute, stunned horror.

"Elena..." Celeste breathed, her mind spinning out of control. "Elena is Beatrice?"

May you like

"Elena is Beatrice," Arthur confirmed smoothly. "And on Saturday night, when you marry Adrian at the foundation gala, her legal rights to the Vale estate will be permanently extinguished under the secondary marital trust agreement."

Before Celeste could respond, the double doors of Arthur’s office were slammed open with a deafening crash.
