Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

Adrian Vale walked into the sixty-fifth-floor office like an impending storm.

Behind him, two of Arthur’s private security guards lay groaning on the polished marble floor of the reception lobby, having been effortlessly neutralized by Vance, who stood in the doorway carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

Adrian wore no coat. His dark suit jacket was open, his tie slightly loosened, his dark eyes fixed on Arthur Montgomery with a lethal, suffocating intensity that caused the air in the vast office to drop instantly toward zero.

Celeste shrieked, stumbling back against the leather sofa.

Arthur didn't flinch. He stood behind his desk, slowly reaching toward the silent intercom button built into his phone console.

"I wouldn't press that button, Arthur," Adrian said, his baritone voice echoing off the high glass walls. "Unless you want the four federal marshals currently sitting in your ground-floor lobby to come up here ten minutes ahead of schedule."

Arthur’s hand hovered inches above the console. Slowly, deliberately, he pulled his hand back, maintaining his arrogant, composed posture.

"Adrian," Arthur said, smoothing his tie. "You always were prone to dramatic entrances. I assume this temper tantrum is related to the minor administrative discrepancies in your foundation's tax filings?"

"It's about a silver locket, Arthur," Adrian said, stopping three feet from the desk.

The room went dead silent.

Arthur’s eyes twitched—a microscopic movement that only a man who had studied human behavior for decades would have noticed.

"A silver locket?" Arthur repeated, his tone airy and dismissive. "I'm afraid I don't follow."

"The locket in the sub-basement vault," Adrian said, leaning forward, resting both hands flat on Arthur’s mahogany desk, framing the older man in his field of view. "The one containing my sister's hair. The one you used your administrative override key to open three nights ago."

Celeste let out a choked sob from the sofa, covering her face with her hands.

Arthur stared at Adrian, his composure finally beginning to show tiny, microscopic cracks around his eyes. "You have no proof of such an absurd accusation, Adrian. As your corporate counsel, I have had authorized access to the estate grounds for decades—"

"I don't need digital proof for the vault, Arthur," Adrian interrupted smoothly. "Because Vance didn't just track the override key. He tracked the money."

Vance stepped forward, opening the leather briefcase and laying three thick stacks of financial documents flat onto Arthur’s desk.

"These are the forensic audit records for the Swiss holding accounts in Zurich," Vance said calmly. "The accounts established under the name of The Beatrice Vale Secondary Trust. For twenty-three years, Arthur, you have been embezzling four million dollars annually from those accounts, using fake legal filings that claimed my sister was alive and residing in a private medical facility in Europe."

Adrian took a step closer, his face inches from Arthur’s.

"You needed my sister to stay missing," Adrian whispered, his voice dark and merciless. "Because if she was declared legally dead, her trust capital would have automatically reverted to my primary operating account, and your legal firm's management fees would have vanished overnight. But if she was found alive, your twenty-three years of systematic embezzlement would have been exposed instantly."

Arthur swallowed hard, his skin turning a sickly, mottled gray under the office lights. "Adrian... listen to me... you don't understand the complex legal structures—"

"I understand everything, Arthur," Adrian said. "I know why you brought Elena Marquez into my house three years ago. You didn't just bring her in as a housekeeper. You brought her in so you could keep her under your thumb, monitoring her every move, ensuring she never regained her childhood memories or questioned her origins."

Arthur drew himself up, his eyes flashing with a desperate, sharp malice. "And what are you going to do about it, Adrian?! You have no physical proof that Elena is Beatrice! The hair in the locket is gone! The Swiss accounts are protected by strict international privacy laws! If you go to the press with this, you will ruin your own foundation, destroy your firm's stock value, and plunge your family name into an absolute media nightmare!"

He sneered, looking toward Celeste.

"You need this marriage, Adrian," Arthur hissed. "You need the Montgomery name to secure the port expansion leases in Europe next month. Without us, your corporate empire loses forty percent of its international valuation overnight!"

Adrian looked at Arthur for a long, quiet moment. Then, a cold, slow smile spread across his face—a smile that made Arthur’s blood run completely cold.

"I don't care about the port leases, Arthur," Adrian said softly. "And I don't need the hair in the locket to prove who my sister is."

He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small white envelope bearing the seal of the State Forensic Pathology Laboratory.

"While you were busy selling synthetic hair swatches to Geneva," Adrian said, setting the envelope gently on the desk, "I took a swab from the handle of the silver tea spoon my sister used in her hospital room yesterday morning."

Arthur stared down at the white envelope as if it were a coiled viper ready to strike.

"The DNA match came back two hours ago, Arthur," Adrian whispered. "An exact, ninety-nine-point-nine percent sibling match."

Arthur fell back into his leather executive chair as if he had been struck in the chest by a cannonball.

"Vance," Adrian said without turning his head. "Call the marshals up."
