Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Hall

Before Marco could pull the trigger, a deafening steel blast shutter slammed down from the ceiling frame of the nursery doorway, crashing into the hardwood floor with an explosive CLANG.

The heavy steel security door—installed five years ago when Vincent turned Greystone into an impenetrable fortress—sealed the nursery off from the hallway in a fraction of a second.

THUD! THUD! THUD!

Three muffled gunshots echoed from the other side of the steel shutter as Marco instinctively fired into the solid barrier. The bullets flatted harmlessly against the three-inch reinforced armor plate.

Inside the nursery, the emergency red lights flickered on, casting a crimson glow over the pink walls, the white rocking horse, and the trembling form of Elena clutching Mia.

“Mr. Moretti!” Elena gasped, her voice shrill with terror. “He’s going to kill us! He has the keys to the estate!”

Vincent moved with absolute, terrifying composure. The grief and shock that had held him frozen moments earlier were gone, replaced entirely by the cold, tactical mind of the Don who had survived three syndicate wars in New York.

He walked past Elena toward the pink canopy bed. He reached beneath the ruffled dust skirt, pressed his palm against a hidden biometric scanner built into the floorboards, and pulled open a concealed trapdoor.

Inside the hidden compartment lay a heavy leather tactical case.

Vincent unlatched the case. Inside sat a suppressed custom Sig Sauer 9mm pistol, four high-capacity magazines, a tactical knife, and an encrypted radio handset.

“Stay on the floor,” Vincent commanded Elena as he checked the slide of the weapon, racking a round into the chamber with a sharp, mechanical CLICK. “The steel shutter will hold for at least an hour against small arms fire. There is a secondary escape tunnel behind the wardrobe that leads to the wine cellar.”

Elena scrambled across the rug, pulling Mia beneath her body, her eyes wide with terror. “Where are you going?”

Vincent looked at the steel shutter blocking the doorway. His eyes were no longer those of a grieving father; they were the eyes of a executioner who had just discovered the man responsible for five years of living in hell.

“I am going to hunt my brother,” Vincent said flatly.

He walked over to the heavy oak wardrobe near the corner of the room, pushed aside the rows of tiny dresses that had belonged to Sophia, and pressed a lever inside the wooden frame. The back wall of the wardrobe swung inward, revealing a pitch-black stone passageway built into the thick walls of the estate.

Vincent slipped into the shadows of the secret corridor, the suppressed Sig Sauer raised in his right hand.

He moved through the dark stone passage with silent, lethal grace, his shoes making no sound against the concrete floor. The passage ran parallel to the main hallway, equipped with narrow observation slits carved into the decorative plaster crown molding of the second floor.

Vincent stopped at the second observation slit, peering out into the main gallery.

In the dim light of the hallway, Marco Bellini was furiously hammering on the keypad beside the steel shutter, trying to enter an override code. When the keypad chimed with an error tone, Marco swore loudly, kicking the steel plate with his heavy boot.

He pulled his satellite phone from his pocket and pressed speed dial.

“Geno!” Marco barked into the phone, his voice echoing down the empty corridor. “Get the breach team up from the gatehouse! Bring the thermal cutter and heavy armor! We’re taking down the Don tonight!”

Vincent listened to the betrayal echoing off the marble walls of his home.

Marco had lied about clearing his personal detail from the estate. The outer gatehouse was still manned by mercenaries loyal to Marco’s payroll—men who had been paid with the very money Marco had skimmed from the Moretti syndicate over five years.

Vincent raised his weapon, lining up the sights through the narrow slit in the plaster molding, targeting the back of Marco’s head.

He could pull the trigger right now. A single 9mm round would end the betrayal, end the lie, and put Marco in the dirt where he belonged.

But as Vincent’s finger tightened around the trigger, he stopped.

Killing Marco here was too simple. Too clean. Marco had not just stolen money; he had stolen five years of Vincent’s life, corrupted his wife’s memory, and forced his stepdaughter and grandchild to live like rats in his own house.

Vincent lowered the weapon slightly.

“No,” Vincent whispered into the dark passage. “You will give me every name before you die, Marco.”

Vincent turned and descended the hidden stone staircase toward the basement, ready to turn Greystone into a slaughterhouse for every man who had set foot on his land to betray him.
