Chapter 9 - The Legacy Restored

One month later.
The grand dining room of Greystone was no longer cold and dark.
The heavy mahogany table was covered in a pristine white linen cloth, set with delicate porcelain plates, silver cutlery, and fresh vases of yellow roses—Sophia’s favorite flowers.
The twelve high-backed leather chairs were filled not with cold mafia captains or corrupt businessmen, but with laughter and warmth.
At the head of the table sat Vincent, wearing a dark blue sweater, carving a roasted turkey.
To his right sat Elena, dressed in an elegant green silk blouse, her hair pinned up, her face bright and radiant with health and happiness. She was currently overseeing the management of the Arthur Vance Educational Foundation—a charitable organization Vincent had established in her name to fund housing and education for single mothers across New York.
Beside Elena sat Mia, sitting on two thick leather cushions so she could reach the table, her face smeared with cranberry sauce, her ragged cloth rabbit sitting in a silver chair beside her.
To Vincent’s left sat Gabriel and two senior estate housekeepers who had served the Moretti family for thirty years—people who were no longer treated as servants, but as cherished members of an extended family.
“More turkey, Mia?” Vincent asked gently, leaning down toward the little girl with a slice of white meat on his fork.
Mia nodded enthusiastically, her hazel eyes sparkling. “Yes, Uncle Vincent! With the sweet potato stuff!”
Elena laughed softly, shaking her head. “Mia, use your napkin first, please.”
Mia dutifully grabbed her cloth napkin, wiping her sticky chin, before opening her mouth for the food.
Vincent watched the child eat, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.
After dinner, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long amber shadows across the estate grounds, Vincent walked up to the second floor alone.
He stood in the doorway of Sophia’s room.
The room had been transformed. The heavy velvet drapes were gone, replaced by light white cotton curtains that let the mountain breeze flow freely through the room. The pink canopy bed had been freshly made with clean linens, and a new bookshelf stood near the window, filled with picture books, coloring sets, and wooden toys.
Mia was lying on the bed, buried under a warm fleece blanket, her thumb tucked loosely into her mouth, listening as Elena read her a bedtime story about a brave rabbit who explored a golden forest.
Vincent stood in the doorway, resting his hand against the polished oak frame, watching them in the soft amber light of the bedside lamp.
Elena looked up, seeing Vincent standing there, and offered him a soft, knowing smile.
She finished the page, kissed Mia’s forehead, and quietly slipped out of the bed, walking over to join Vincent at the door.
“She’s almost asleep,” Elena whispered, looking back at her daughter.
“She looks happy, Elena,” Vincent murmured.
Elena turned to look into Vincent’s eyes, her gaze filled with profound gratitude. “She is happy, Vincent. For the first time in her life, she feels safe. We both do.”
She reached out, placing her hand gently over Vincent’s arm.
“Thank you,” Elena whispered. “For giving us a home.”
May you like
Vincent looked down at her hand, then back at the sleeping child on the bed.
“You didn't just find a home here, Elena,” Vincent said softly, his voice full of a deep, unbreakable warmth. “You brought this house back to life. You saved me.”
