Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Truth

The music softened as Richard descended the grand staircase. The ballroom grew silent, the elite of the city parting like the Red Sea to let the billionaire pass. Victoria moved to his side, her arm slipping into his. She felt the tension in his muscles. "You’re nervous, Dad?" she whispered, leaning close. "It’s just a celebration. The market is up, the board is behind us. You have nothing to worry about."
Richard gave her a thin, sad smile. "You are the most capable person I have ever known, Victoria. That has never been in doubt."
He stepped onto the podium, the spotlight blinding. He raised his crystal glass, the ice clinking—a sound that seemed amplified in the breathless silence. "Tonight, we celebrate seventy years of life. But more importantly, we celebrate the future."
Victoria’s heart hammered against her ribs. This was it. The announcement.
"For decades, I have built this empire on trust, precision, and family," Richard began, his voice booming. "But I have realized that true legacy is not found in the bank accounts or the stock price. It is found in the truth."
Just as he prepared to say the words that would change everything, the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall groaned open. A hush fell over the crowd. Amelia Carter, Richard’s personal legal counsel for the last decade, walked in. She wore a sharp, navy blue suit that stood out against the evening gowns of the guests. She was not a guest; she was an executor.
Victoria felt a chill run down her spine. She stepped away from the podium, her eyes narrowing. "Amelia? This is a private event. How did you get past security?"
Amelia didn't break stride. She ignored the murmurs, her gaze fixed entirely on Richard. She stopped at the foot of the stage, her face an unreadable mask of professional detachment. "Mr. Weston, I am here on behalf of the fiduciary duty you requested I uphold three weeks ago."
Richard’s face went pale. He gripped the edges of the podium, his knuckles turning white. "Amelia, not now. We can discuss this later."
"There is no later," Amelia said, her voice clear, amplified by the silent room. "The documents have been finalized. The court has been notified. Before you announce a successor to an empire based on bloodline, the shareholders and the public deserve the truth."

Victoria turned to her father, her voice trembling with sudden, sharp alarm. "Dad? What is she talking about?"
Richard couldn't speak. He looked like a man watching his executioner walk onto the scaffold. Amelia reached into her leather briefcase, pulling out a thick, sealed envelope. "Victoria, you are the most prepared person in this room. You should be prepared for this, too."
