Chapter 3 - The Collapse of a Dynasty

The atmosphere in the ballroom had shifted from celebration to a wake. Every guest stood motionless, caught in the gravity of the unfolding drama. Victoria grabbed the envelope from Amelia’s hand, her fingers trembling. "This is private! You have no right!"

"I have the legal mandate," Amelia replied, her voice cold.

Before Victoria could rip open the seal, a gasping sound tore through the room. Richard clutched his chest, his face contorting in sudden, visceral agony. The crystal glass slipped from his hand, shattering against the marble floor like a gunshot. The billionaire, the man who had controlled markets and toppled rivals, slumped to his knees. His breath came in short, jagged wheezes.

"Dad!" Victoria screamed, abandoning the envelope and rushing to his side. She dropped to the floor, catching him before his head hit the stone. The room erupted in chaos. People were shouting, cell phones were out, calling for help.

Amelia stood still, the envelope still in her hand. She didn't look triumphant; she looked burdened.

While the medical team rushed forward, pushing through the crowd to reach Richard, Victoria held her father’s hand. He was staring at the ceiling, his eyes unfocused, his skin ashen.

"Amelia, what did you do?" Victoria sobbed, her tears staining her expensive dress. "You killed him!"

Amelia knelt down, placing the sealed envelope on the floor beside them. She didn't leave. She waited. Richard’s eyes fluttered, then opened. He looked at Victoria, his gaze pained but lucid.

"Amelia," he whispered, his voice a ghost of its former power. "Read it."

Victoria tried to stop her, but Richard gripped her hand with surprising strength. "Victoria, listen. You have to know."

Amelia picked up the envelope. Her voice echoed through the shocked room. "Three decades ago, a DNA test was conducted. It confirmed that Victoria Weston is not the biological daughter of Richard Weston. The mother, Clara Weston, had an affair. Richard knew. He knew from the beginning. He chose to raise her, to love her, and to protect her. But the Weston bloodline... it ended with him."

The ballroom fell into a silence so profound it felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. Victoria went rigid. The words didn't make sense. She wasn't a Weston? Her entire life—the training, the expectations, the name—it was all a facade?

"You knew?" Victoria whispered, looking at her father. "You knew for thirty years, and you let me believe... you let me work myself to the bone to earn a name that wasn't mine?"

Richard looked at her, his eyes shimmering with tears. "I didn't hide it to punish you, Victoria. I hid it because I was terrified. In this world, you are only as good as your lineage. I thought if they knew, they would take you away from me. I thought they would take your position, your future. I didn't want to lose you."
