Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Greystone

Marcus reached inside his overcoat, pulling a sleek, silver-plated pistol equipped with a suppressor.
"It really is a tragedy," Marcus sighed, pointing the weapon directly at Emma’s chest. "A grieving mother, driven mad by the loss of her own child, poisons the Moretti heirs out of bitter jealousy and then takes her own life. It is such a clean, compelling story. The press will swallow it whole."
Emma did not scream. She stood straight, her hands resting over her apron, shielding the nursery behind her with her own body.
"Gabriel will know," Emma said, her voice ringing clear and calm. "He knows the taste of truth now, Marcus. He knows his wife didn't die of natural causes, and he knows I would die twenty times before harming these children."
"Gabriel is a broken fool!" Marcus hissed, his eyes flaring with long-suppressed jealousy. "His father built this empire with blood and iron! Then Gabriel comes along, wanting to go legitimate, wanting to pay taxes, wanting to turn us into Wall Street accountants! Isabella was turning him soft. I had to prune the branch before the tree died!"
"You didn't prune the branch," a voice boomed from the dark balcony behind them. "You cut your own throat, Marcus."
The heavy glass balcony doors shattered inward.
Gabriel Moretti stepped through the curtain of falling rain, his massive frame soaked, a heavy tactical sidearm held in a rock-steady two-handed grip. Beside him, Mateo and four heavily armed security operators poured into the room, their red laser sights instantly locking onto Marcus’s chest, throat, and forehead.
Marcus froze, his face draining of all color. "Gabe... Gabe, listen to me—"
"I heard every word," Gabriel whispered. His voice was terrifyingly calm—the absolute silence before a hurricane strikes. "I was listening on the nursery monitor from the security room."
Emma stepped aside as Gabriel walked forward.
Marcus dropped his suppressed gun onto the carpet, his hands shaking violently as he raised them into the air. "Gabe, I did it for the family! The Moretti name was becoming weak! You were giving away everything we built!"
"You killed Isabella," Gabriel said, stepping so close that the barrel of his weapon rested directly between Marcus’s eyes. "You murdered my wife. You tried to starve my children. And you tried to frame the woman who saved them."
"Please, Gabe—we're blood!" Marcus begged, tears of terror finally streaming down his aristocratic face. "Your father was my brother!"
"My father had honor," Gabriel growled. "You are just a parasite."
Gabriel pulled the trigger back slightly, his muscle tensing to end the traitor’s life right there on the nursery carpet.
"Gabriel, no!" Emma’s soft voice broke through the tension like a silver bell.
Gabriel paused, his gray eyes flicking toward her, still filled with lethal fire. "He killed Isabella, Emma."
"He did," Emma said gently, walking over to him and resting her soft hand over his tensed forearm. "And he will pay for every second of her suffering. But do not do it here. Do not spill his filthy blood in the room where your children sleep. Do not let his evil take another piece of your soul in front of Anthony and Lucia."
Gabriel looked down at Emma’s hand on his arm. He looked at her soft, brown eyes—eyes filled with absolute purity, strength, and love.
Slowly, the blinding rage in Gabriel’s chest began to cool. He lowered the weapon.

"Take him to the basement," Gabriel commanded Mateo. "And bring Dr. Harrison down with him. They will tell the federal prosecutors everything about the Zurich accounts before they ever see the sun again."
Mateo grabbed Marcus by the collar, slamming him against the wall and dragging him out into the hallway as the traitor sobbed for mercy.
