Part 9: The Father They Thought Was in Europe

The heavy steel door swung open.

For the first time since entering the surveillance room, Emiliano stopped watching his family through a screen.

Now he intended to face them.

In person.

Victor caught up beside him.

"Sir."

Emiliano didn't slow his pace.

"Call the hospital."

"Yes, sir."

"I want the best cardiologist available."

Victor immediately took out his phone.

"And find out which hospital Mr. Miguel Alvarez was admitted to."

"It'll be done."

Emiliano continued walking through the hidden corridor.

His footsteps echoed against the concrete walls.

Every step carried the weight of five lost years.

Meanwhile...

Rosa stood frozen in the back garden.

Maria still held her hand.

"You have to go."

Rosa looked toward the house.

"The girls..."

"I can't leave them."

Maria gently squeezed her fingers.

"They'll understand."

"No."

Rosa whispered.

"They've already lost one mother."

"I promised they'd never wonder where I was."

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

"Your father may be dying."

Those words shattered the last of Rosa's composure.

She covered her mouth to keep herself from crying aloud.

Martina looked up.

"Rosa?"

The little girl had never seen her like this before.

"What happened?"

Rosa forced a smile.

"Nothing, sweetheart."

But children always recognize tears.

Daniela quietly stepped closer.

"Is your daddy sick?"

Rosa couldn't answer.

She simply nodded.

Martina immediately hugged her.

"Then you should go."

Rosa looked down in surprise.

"But..."

"We'll be okay."

The little girl tried to smile.

"You always tell us..."

"...that families stay together."

"You should be with yours."

Rosa knelt and wrapped both girls in a trembling embrace.

"I don't deserve you two."

Daniela whispered,

"You do."

At that exact moment...

The rear service door opened.

Everyone turned.

Footsteps echoed across the stone terrace.

Strong.

Steady.

Unmistakable.

Maria gasped first.

"No..."

Rosa slowly stood.

Her face drained of color.

The girls stared in disbelief.

Standing beneath the afternoon sunlight...

Still wearing the same navy suit he'd supposedly flown to Europe in...

Was Emiliano Duarte.

Martina blinked twice.

"Daddy?"

Daniela whispered,

"But..."

"...you left."

Emiliano smiled sadly.

"I know."

Before anyone could ask another question...

Both girls ran.

Martina reached him first.

She crashed into his arms with enough force to nearly knock him backward.

Daniela wrapped herself around him a second later.

For several long moments...

Nobody spoke.

The billionaire simply held his daughters.

Tighter than he ever had before.

As if trying to make up for years in a single embrace.

"I'm sorry."

He whispered into their hair.

"So..."

"So sorry."

The girls didn't understand why he was apologizing.

They simply hugged him harder.

Rosa remained several feet away.

Confused.

Concerned.

Unsure whether she should leave.

Emiliano finally looked up.

Their eyes met.

For a long moment...

Neither spoke.

Then Emiliano walked toward her.

Before Rosa could say a word...

He bowed his head.

"I owe you an apology."

She looked stunned.

"Sir..."

"No."

His voice cracked.

"Please."

"Let me finish."

The girls looked between them in confusion.

Maria quietly wiped away tears.

"I have failed you."

Emiliano continued.

"I believed lies."

"I questioned your loyalty."

"I allowed someone to disrespect you..."

"...inside my own home."

Rosa immediately shook her head.

"You don't have to—"

"I do."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Because you never stopped protecting my daughters."

"Even when no one protected you."

Silence settled over the garden.

Martina looked at Daniela.

Neither girl had ever seen their father cry.

Rosa spoke softly.

"They needed someone."

"They needed their father."

"I wasn't there."

"You were working."

"I was absent."

She looked at him kindly.

"Those aren't always the same thing."

Her grace hurt even more.

She wasn't angry.

She wasn't bitter.

She was trying to comfort the man who had doubted her.

Emiliano felt even smaller.

Victor approached quietly.

He handed Emiliano his phone.

"The hospital confirmed it."

Emiliano looked at Rosa.

"Your father suffered a heart attack."

She covered her mouth.

"Is he..."

"He's alive."

Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks.

"But he needs surgery."

"I have to go."

She turned immediately.

Then stopped.

"The girls..."

Emiliano gently interrupted.

"I'll take care of them."

She looked uncertain.

"I promised—"

"I know."

He smiled through tears.

"You kept your promise."

"Now let me keep mine."

She stared at him for a long moment.

Finally...

She nodded.

"Thank you."

As Rosa hurried toward the front driveway...

The sound of high heels echoed from inside the house.

Patricia.

She stepped onto the terrace carrying a glass of wine.

The smile on her face disappeared instantly.

The glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered across the stone floor.

Her lips parted.

"Emiliano?"

Nobody answered.

She looked from him...

To Victor...

To Maria...

To Rosa standing beside the driveway...

Then back again.

"I..."

"You..."

"Weren't you..."

"In Europe?"

Her voice trembled for the first time since he'd known her.

Emiliano looked at her calmly.

"No."

The single word was enough to drain every bit of color from her face.

Behind Patricia...

The stranger stepped onto the terrace.

He stopped cold.

His eyes widened.

For one unbearable second...

Nobody moved.

The afternoon breeze rustled through the garden.

A bird sang somewhere beyond the fountain.

Then the stranger quietly muttered,

"Oh..."

"...this is bad."

Emiliano slowly turned toward him.

"No."

His voice was colder than ice.

"This..."

He glanced at Patricia.

"...is only the beginning."

Patricia realized, with horrifying clarity, that the man she thought was halfway across the world...

Had been watching everything.

Every lie.

Every insult.

Every kiss.

Every plan.

May you like

And for the first time since entering Emiliano Duarte's life...

She was the one who looked afraid.
