Chapter 4 - Shadows Over Whispering Pines

By seven o'clock that evening, the storm that had been brewing offshore finally slammed into Carmel. Heavy rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse, and the wind howled through the coastal cypress trees below.
Down on the third floor, in the resort's executive administrative wing, Samuel Fletcher sat at his massive mahogany desk. The lights in his office were turned off, save for the pale green glow of his desktop monitor.
His hands were shaking as he typed an encrypted message into an anonymous web portal:
SUBJECT: EMERGENCY. ARTHUR VANCE IS ALIVE. HE IS IN THE PENTHOUSE. JULIAN KNOWS.
Five seconds passed. The cursor blinked on the black screen.
Then a response appeared, letter by letter:
DOES JULIAN HAVE THE LEDGERS?
Samuel typed back quickly:
UNKNOWN. JULIAN HAS PUT A MAID IN THE ROOM AS A PRIVATE GUARD. I WAS THREATENED WITH IMMEDIATE TERMINATION IF I APPROACH THE SUITE.
Another pause. Then:
ENSURE THE OLD MAN DOES NOT LEAVE THAT ROOM ALIVE. STERLING IS ON A PRIVATE JET FROM NEW YORK. ARRIVING AT MONTEREY AIRPORT AT 10:00 PM. HOLD THE LINE, SAMUEL. OR YOU GO DOWN WITH HIM.
Samuel shut down the monitor, pulled off his glasses, and wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.
Meanwhile, on the top floor, Sarah returned to the penthouse carrying a large paper bag from the pharmacy, filled with Chloe’s inhalers, nebulizer solution, and vitamins. In her other hand, she held a small wooden toy—a carved lighthouse she had bought at the hospital gift shop for her daughter.
She found Julian standing in the kitchen, staring down at a thick, yellowed paper file he had retrieved from a wall safe hidden behind a modern painting.
"Is your daughter taken care of?" Julian asked without looking up.
"Yes, Mr. Vance," Sarah said, setting the platinum card back on the marble counter. "Marcus took me straight to the pharmacy and then to my apartment so my sister could give Chloe her treatment. She’s sleeping peacefully now. Thank you again."
Julian picked up the credit card and slipped it back into his wallet. "You don't need to thank me, Sarah. It was a business transaction."
"No, it wasn't," Sarah said softly, walking closer to the counter. "A business transaction is what Mr. Fletcher does when he calculates whether a human being is worth a glass of water. What you did was help a mother save her child."
Julian’s eyes flicked to hers, cold and sharp, but Sarah did not look away.
"You don't know me, Sarah," Julian said quietly. "If you ask anyone in this industry, they will tell you I don't have a heart. I have an income statement."
"I don't care what the industry says," Sarah replied softly. "I know what I saw in the lobby. You didn't carry that old man up here because of an income statement. You carried him because he’s your father."
Julian’s jaw tightened. He closed the yellowed paper file with a sharp snap.
Inside that file were the original corporate incorporation documents for Whispering Pines Lodge from 2011. Beneath his father’s jagged signature was a secondary signature—one Julian had ignored for fifteen years because he had believed Richard Sterling’s story that he was merely a late-stage savior.
The second signature belonged to Sterling Asset Management LLC, dated six months before Arthur Vance’s sudden disappearance.
"Sarah," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register.
"Yes, sir?"
"I am going down to the Monterey airport to meet Richard Sterling," Julian said. "He is arriving unexpectedly on his private jet."
Sarah felt a sudden chill run down her spine. "Is something wrong?"
"I don't know yet," Julian said, picking up his coat. "While I am gone, no one enters this penthouse. Not Samuel Fletcher, not the hotel staff, not room service. You keep that door locked from the inside. If anyone attempts to enter, press the red emergency button on the bedside panel. It alerts coastal security directly, bypassing the resort desk."
Sarah nodded firmly. "I understand."
May you like
Julian walked to the master bedroom door, glanced inside at the sleeping old man whose chest rose and fell beneath the oxygen tube, and then turned back to Sarah.
"If my father wakes up," Julian added quietly, "tell him... tell him I am going to find the truth."
