Chapter 6 - The Tempest in the Boardroom

The silence inside the private hangar stretched so long that the drumming of rain against the steel roof sounded like gunfire.
Richard Sterling slowly lowered his arms. He adjusted the cuffs of his camel-hair coat, his posture shifting from welcoming mentor to ruthless corporate chairman.
"So," Richard said softly, his voice devoid of any warm affection. "The old ghost finally talked."
"He didn't have to," Julian replied, pulling the printed audit pages from his coat pocket and tossing them at Richard’s feet. "I pulled the 2011 wire logs from Pacific Crest Holdings. You bled Whispering Pines dry. You manufactured the default. And then you gave my father an ultimatum."
Richard didn't bother to look at the papers on the wet floor. He simply stepped on them with his polished leather shoe.
"Your father was a weak, sentimental foolish man, Julian," Richard said calmly, taking a step closer. "He wanted Whispering Pines to be a cozy little family retreat for locals and tree-huggers. He had no vision. He was sitting on the most valuable piece of coastal real estate in Northern California, and he was charging ninety dollars a night!"
"He was an honest man!" Julian shouted, his voice shattering the composure he had maintained for years.
"Honesty doesn't build a four-billion-dollar brand, Julian!" Richard snapped back, pointing a finger at Julian’s chest. "I made you! I took a grieving, angry twenty-three-year-old boy and forged him into the most feared executive in hospitality! Look at what you built! You owe your entire life to what I did!"
"I owe my life to a father who lived in shelters for fifteen years so I wouldn't wear handcuffs!" Julian growled, taking two massive strides forward until he was towering over Richard. "And tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, I am calling an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors. I am presenting these audits, stripping you of your chairmanship, and handing every page of this evidence to the United States Attorney."
Richard stared at Julian for a long moment. Then, slowly, a cold, cruel smile touched his lips.
"You really think you can do that, Julian?" Richard whispered. "Do you know who owns the debt covenants on Vance Hospitality's new European expansion? My private equity group. If you fire a shot at me, I trigger a technical default on your entire portfolio by noon tomorrow. You will be bankrupt before the news cycle hits the East Coast."
"Then let it burn," Julian said, his eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying clarity. "I would rather be broke with my father than hold a billion dollars given to me by a snake."
Julian turned on his heel and walked toward his SUV.
"Julian!" Richard called out, his voice sharp and menacing behind him. "Check on your penthouse! Samuel Fletcher is very thorough when his pension is on the line!"
May you like
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His heart slammed against his ribs.
Without another word, he leaped into the back seat of the SUV. "Marcus! Back to the resort! Now!"
