PART 3 — THE ENEMY I NEVER SAW COMING

The next morning, Ryan sent me another file.
This time…
photos.
Brittany meeting someone.
A woman.
Elegant.
Familiar.
I stared.
“No.”
Ryan replied:
“You know her?”
I couldn’t breathe.
Because I did.
Michael’s older sister.
Victoria Carter.
The woman everyone trusted.
The woman who smiled at every family dinner.
The woman who always told me:
“You’re the best thing that happened to Michael.”
I confronted Michael.
He looked at the photo.
And went pale.
“Victoria?”
“Yes.”
He shook his head.
“She wouldn’t.”
I placed the evidence on the table.
“She already did.”
Then I found something else.
A hidden folder in Michael’s office.
Inside:
Old documents.
Financial records.
And a letter.
From his father.
The first line:
“If you are reading this, someone betrayed us.”
I kept reading.
His father had discovered someone inside Carter Global was stealing money.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
The final sentence made my blood run cold.
“Don’t trust the woman who smiles when everyone else suffers.”
I looked at Michael.
“Your father wrote this.”
He nodded.
Then whispered:
“I think I know who.”
“Who?”
May you like
His answer shocked me.
“My mother.”
