Part 5: The Truth About Lily’s Father

Part 5: The Truth About Lily’s Father
I almost didn’t answer Amelia’s call.
Not because I hated her.
That would have been easier.
Hate is simple.
Love is complicated.
And the worst part was…
A piece of me still cared.
The phone rang again.
Then again.
Finally, I picked up.
“Hello.”
There was a long silence.
Then I heard her breathing.
Like she had been crying before calling.
“Daniel.”
My name sounded different coming from her now.
Before today, it sounded like home.
Now it sounded like an apology.
“Say what you need to say.”
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
She noticed.
“I know you’re angry.”
“I am.”
A pause.
“But I’m more disappointed.”
She didn’t answer.
Because that hurt more.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
I looked out the window.
“People always say that after they hurt someone.”
“Daniel…”
“No.”
I closed my eyes.
“I need you to understand something.”
A pause.
“I could have handled the truth.”
The silence on the other end told me she understood.
“You didn’t give me a choice.”
Her voice cracked.
“I was scared.”
“You keep saying that.”
“I was.”
“And I believe you.”
A pause.
“But you still lied.”
She started crying.
Quietly.
Not dramatically.
Just broken.
“I want to explain everything.”
I sat down.
“Then explain.”
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then Amelia began.
“When I was twenty-four, I met Ethan.”
I listened.
“He was charming.”
A sad laugh.
“He made me feel like I mattered.”
I didn’t interrupt.
“He told me he wanted a family.”
She paused.
“Then I got pregnant.”
My jaw tightened.
“He changed.”
Her voice became smaller.
“He became distant.”
A pause.
“He said having a child would ruin his life.”
I looked down.
At least now the pieces were connecting.
“He wanted me to give Lily up.”
My hands tightened.
“And you didn’t.”
“No.”
A pause.
“I ran.”
“From him?”
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“I changed my number. Moved cities. Started over.”
“And then you met me.”
“Yes.”
The word sat between us.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Her answer was immediate.
“Because I was afraid you would see me differently.”
I laughed quietly.
“Amelia, you don’t understand.”
A pause.
“I’m not upset because Lily exists.”
She became silent.
“I’m upset because you thought I wouldn’t accept her.”
A broken sound came through the phone.
“I didn’t know.”
That sentence hurt.
Because maybe it was true.
Maybe she had never learned what trust looked like.
“What about Ethan?”
I asked.
“Why did he come today?”
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“Because he found us.”
My expression changed.
“What?”
“He contacted me three months ago.”
“Three months?”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“No.”
I stood.
The anger returned.
“Why?”
“Because he threatened me.”
Silence.
“What kind of threat?”
She took a shaky breath.
“He said if I didn’t let him back into Lily’s life, he would expose everything.”
“What everything?”
Another pause.
Then:
“Your family.”
My heart stopped.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
I sat back down.
“What does my family have to do with Ethan?”
She whispered:
“I don’t know.”
I didn’t believe her.
Not completely.
“Amelia.”
“Yes?”
“What are you still hiding?”
The silence was longer this time.
Too long.
Finally she said:
“There’s something you don’t know about Lily.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
“I wasn’t the only one who knew Ethan was dangerous.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“My father knew.”
I froze.
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
The room felt colder.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then how?”
She hesitated.
“He left something behind.”
“What?”
“A file.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course there’s a file.”
She ignored that.
“Daniel, please listen.”
Her voice became urgent.
“Before he died, my father investigated Ethan.”
“Why?”
“Because he suspected Ethan wasn’t who he claimed to be.”
I stayed silent.
“And?”
“And he discovered Ethan had another reason for wanting Lily.”
My stomach tightened.
“What reason?”
Amelia’s voice dropped.
“He wasn’t trying to get his daughter back.”
A pause.
“He wanted something Lily had.”
I frowned.
“She’s six.”
“I know.”
“What could a six-year-old possibly have?”
Amelia whispered:
“A key.”
I froze.
“A key?”
“Yes.”
The conversation suddenly felt unreal.
A child.
A secret.
A hidden key.
A man who appeared at my wedding.
“What key?”
“I don’t know.”
She sounded scared.
“But my father wrote one sentence before he died.”
I waited.
“What sentence?”
Her voice trembled.
“He wrote…”
A pause.
“Protect Lily. The key opens the truth about the Carter family.”
My blood ran cold.
“The Carter family?”
I repeated.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
I didn’t speak.
Because suddenly I remembered something.
Something my grandfather told me years ago.
Something I had forgotten.
A sentence.
One strange sentence.
“Never trust a person who wants the whole truth.”
At the time, I thought it was just an old man’s warning.
Now…
I wasn’t so sure.
“Daniel?”
Amelia’s voice pulled me back.
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
I closed my eyes.
“I know.”
“Can you ever forgive me?”
I looked at the empty wedding ring box on the table.
The symbol of the future I thought I had.
“I don’t know.”
She cried softly.
“That’s fair.”
I was about to hang up.
Then she said:
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“There’s one more thing.”
I waited.
“Ethan didn’t come to stop the wedding.”
My body went still.
“What?”
“He came because he knew someone else was coming.”
“Who?”
Her answer came quietly.
And it changed everything.
“Your father.”
I stopped breathing.
Because my father had been dead for eight years.
May you like
Or at least…
That was what everyone told me.
